To expect MPs to work through Summer?

AIBU to find it odd how there is a shut down of parliament over the Summer?
Something so important as debate on how the country is run closed similar to a school for children?
I'm not saying MPs do not deserve a holiday, but surely there are enough of them to keep things running and have a staggered break?

Every job needs a holiday

Parliamentary recess does not = being on holiday.

MPs have multiple roles, all are important in our democracy:
Parliamentary business
Government or opposition business
Constituency work
Party business/activity

People who don't understand the system seem to think if the chamber of the HoC is not sitting, nothing is happening. But that's not the case.

Within the recess period MPs will often take a holiday, but it is not correct to think (or pretend) that MPs are on holiday for the whole of recess.

I think it's fair enough actually that they are all allowed a chunk of time living at home and dealing with constituency business over the summer. Remember, most of them are working away from home and their families when parliament is in session. It's not so bad if you're an MP in the home counties, but if you're from further afield it must be very hard on your spouse/DC. Also, they need to meet with their constituents and be available - not easy if you're in London all week and your constituency is in Devon or the Wirral.

Actually most of them do keep working. They’ll take a two week holiday like everyone else, keep their offices open, many still hold surgeries and they all answer emails and do casework. Casework doesn’t stop over summer!
