I am glad I didn't have a holiday abroad this year...

... but others don't understand why not! I used to take a couple of holidays abroad a year before Covid and since then, one a year. I don't have the travel bug at the moment and had no desire to go abroad this summer. I had a long weekend away, a couple of hours' drive away, really enjoyed it and this was enough for me. I really enjoyed the rest of my time off work, going on nice walks, meeting friends for lunch and lovely chilled days with good books.

Some friends can't believe I didn't have a 'proper' holiday and are wondering what's wrong with me!

Anyone else not have the travel bug at times?

Me! We were invited to join family at an Aegean beach holiday resort, but given the heat here (SE UK) at the time, I couldn’t face anywhere likely to be even hotter.

But it’s partly an age thing. I always used to have very itchy feet, would go anywhere, but have come to hate all the faff and hassle of airports and planes, especially if more than a very few hours of jet lag will be involved.

We had the opposite feeling - after going to Devon last year and the weather struggling to reach 20° we booked to go abroad because we wanted some (warm!) sun
As it was we've had plenty of warm weather here this year, but most of it was before the school holidays started!

I’m glad we haven’t been on holiday full stop. Usually we do a UK holiday but even that is hard work and just something else to think about.

Holidays are nice but I’m sick of the stress that comes with them so my holiday this year has been a brain break from it. 😄

I haven't been abroad since 2010 and don't miss it one bit.

I don’t fly anymore. We had a family holiday to Greece about 6/7 years ago and on the way home I told DH I wasn’t planning on flying again. The only time I would is if one of my kids were abroad (eg with school) and there was some kind of emergency.
I’d be so happy just holidaying in the UK, but DH keeps organising cruises now that I don’t fly. He really wants to travel and I don’t. I look at it like, he’s compromised on the flights, so I compromise on the destinations. I enjoy it when I’m there, but I’d get just as much from seeing new places here. Scotland especially. I’d go there every holiday if I could.

@HullaBulla I’ve just finished a week off at home. My kitchen cupboards and drawers have been sorted and rearranged, I’ve had lovely dog walks, I’ve been to the gym five times, we went to a theatre matinee and we have had a couple of meals out. It’s been soooo nice. I’m already planning when I can do it with my 2026 leave!

Can I book you to do my kitchen drawers next year please. I'm in Edinburgh so you could get a holiday too 😁

HerewardtheSleepy · 01/09/2025 13:19

We gave up on foreign holidays (as in one a year lasting a week - 10 days away) over 15 years ago.

Now have 3 or 4 night city breaks in the UK, Ireland mainland Europe. Roughly 3 a year. Much more enjoyable.

This summer I’m the uk has been warm and beautiful. I can understand not missing a trip abroad. Last year was wet and miserable so I think you’d maybe feel different if we’d had a wet summer. Fingers crossed next year is nice as we’re not going away for the first time since Covid and my mh is vastly improved by consistent sunshine.

Greenwriter76 · 01/09/2025 13:38

When I was younger, childless, I had the travel bug.
As I’ve got older and have a young dd, not so much - though it might change as she gets older as I do feel we ought to go abroad as a family at some point. We have lovely days out and breaks in the UK.
I love my own bed and home comforts and honestly feel I can relax here more than anywhere else in the world!

PosiePetal · 01/09/2025 13:40

I seem to have lost the desire to travel and love spending time in the UK now. Luckily, partner is the same. In my younger years, I always went to France in the summer for a couple of weeks, have had other holidays overseas, Greece, Canaries, Spain, Italy and often visited family in the US. Am in my 50's.

Some people seem to lack imagination. They can't understand that people can enjoy different things, and there are certain preferences (such as being satisfied without the type of travel they themselves enjoy) that they apparently find particularly baffling. Or maybe it's just that they feel 'allowed' to comment more vociferously on this choice, whereas they recognise that it would be rude to remark upon many other preferences or lifestyle choices, so they use travel as an emotional outlet.

What kind of people do you know that ‘can’t believe’ 🙄 you didn’t have a holiday abroad. On what planet are these people who seem so shallow. Not everyone goes abroad for a holiday.

People are weird. I’ve got a temporary pay rise and the amount of people who have said I should use it for a holiday is baffling, it was their immediate go to.

BrendaSmall · 01/09/2025 14:13

I’ve got the travel bug 🤣🤣
No way would I ever stay in the UK for a weeks holiday, a weekend yes at a push!
The weather is absolutely shite here I spend most of my time in jumpers!
I go abroad regularly purely for the weather, 40c is just right for me, even hotter though would be better 🤣

Onesie123 · 01/09/2025 14:21

We had a big holiday in Feb/March. It was absolutely wonderful to escape the weather here. I prefer going then to the summer tbh, especially school summer hols when everywhere is heaving. Obviously you have to go further afield than most of Europe for decent sun though.

Vintagenow · 01/09/2025 14:33

I feel exactly the same. I've grown to dislike travelling. I hate the cattle market feel of airports/planes/security queues. I'm increasingly intolerant of loud people and dread the thought of being stuck next to one on a flight with no escape.
And I don't like temperatures above 25c.
I'm planning to see a bit more of the UK, by car where I can travel in peace!

GlastoNinja · 01/09/2025 14:35

I’m with you OP.

There was a recent thread on here about holidays and sunbeds - it sounded horrendous

6thformoptions · 01/09/2025 14:39

We can't afford to travel at the moment, for the foreseeable. We were lucky in that when I first got inheritance we did a couple of long haul trips before earmarking the rest for dd's education and then after that was done we planned to do house upgrades/repairs. I'm glad we did it that way as it would have all gone back to HMRC if I had just saved travel until after her education, with the VAT! If I had known about VAT when we started I'd probably have not taken the holidays in the hope I'd be able to stretch it (which it wouldn't have). As it is we can't afford 6th form now, so I would never have got to go away. I'm glad I earmarked a few thousand for fun. My mum would have liked that and you can't take those memories away. Or education for that matter.

I am nearly the same including the temperature but I still love travelling abroad.
I go out of season or in the shoulder seasons, I pick non touristy areas and travel mid week. By doing this not only do I save a fortune, I avoid a lot of the issues mentioned.
I dont seek pools and loungers so I have a great time!

purplecorkheart · 01/09/2025 14:52

I am in the same boat op. I have the leave and finance for a holiday. I just don't fancy heading aboard this year. I am getting a huge amount of question/flack from people at work/friends. I actually thinking of lying and saying that I am abroad somewhere and have a quiet holiday at home.
