To sell free baby clothes on Vinted

Babyclothesconfused · 30/08/2025 16:34

One of the Mums in the village offered up a huge box of old baby clothes for free. There wasn't much interest (I know as she put it twice on the WhatsApp group) so I said I'd have them.

Anyway I've grabbed the few bits I want and some for a friend but lots of them are wrong season for DD and not quite my style. They are also quite well washed (no complaint they were free!).

I was thinking I might put them on Vinted in big very cheap bundles and see if they shift. I could give them to charity but wondering if a charity shop would actually want them?

Is it ethical to sell them on Vinted when I could technically give them to charity?

Clothing bins will have information available for what happens to the donation. I support my local one because the bags are sorted, wearable clothes sold and unwearable recycled, not dumped at landfill sites.

This data is shared on the website from 2023-24, "Across the UK The Fire Fighters Charity Clothes Recycling generated just over £956,000, collecting over 4,700 tonnes of clothing, re-diverting this away from landfill."

And more recently, "In the last 12 months the clothes banks have generated over £600,000."

@Babyclothesconfused like you, I am conscious of reducing waste and not contributing to landfill. You've given a lot of thought and time to the future use of these clothes. I hope you find a taker for them and if not, your chosen charity will benefit if you donate in branch or to their clothes bin. 😊

I actually think it's fine. Charities can't sell baby clothes - most of them end up in landfill, there's no money in rag these days as theres just so much textile waste. If you sell them, they're more likely to get used. We've got more baby clothes than we can possibly use in this country.

Agree with this. More likely to be used if sold on vinted. Likely to be exported as waste if they go into one of those supermarket 'recycling' bins.

ETA: I know you're just canvassing opinion OP but I'd suggest just doing what you want to do. You'll get all the views on here and just end up confused.

Okay, sell on Vinted and give the money to charity seems to be a good solution.

Needspaceforlego · 31/08/2025 09:07

Its not in the spirit they were given to resell them.
Give them to the charity shop. Let them sort them into rags sold by weight and clothing they can sell on.

It also says clothing is "usually sold in under-developed countries" which is code for, "we export our waste" because it's cheaper than recycling it and nobody wants to buy it. The developing world is overwhelmed with used clothing, lots of countries are increasingly banning imports of it. Most of it goes to landfill or incineration.

Haha I know I've become weirdly invested. I need to get a life! Just interested in what people think!

I've just offered them to a few Mum's I remembered were due soon so waiting to hear back but I think probably will be a no. I'd not I'm going to whack the good ones in a bundle on vinted and if I make anything I'll donate to charity.
I'll put the others in the clothes recycling bin but I kind of think it's wishful thinking to think they are actually going to be all sold or recycled.

Are there no baby banks you can give them to in your area?

I think they would only want good quality winter togs at the moment not summer bits.

I think they'll take anything if people are desperate and will store it. Some people have no option to only have good quality stuff.

itsonlyjoan · 31/08/2025 14:10

I have over 30 bin bags or clothes away including baby clothes free on marketplace

pokewoman · 31/08/2025 14:28

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Once ive given something to someone, what they do with it is up to them.

I give my sis in law hand me downs that are still good quality. She sells anything she doesnt want to keep and that's fine. If I was that bothered, id sell them myself but I just want rid and cba with faffing on vinted.

No. They sell loads of baby clothes.
They are very much needed.

toomuchfaff · 31/08/2025 14:30

Just sell them... if you want to sell them, and someone will buy them, sell them.

Well that's not my experience at all. But I am not familiar with every charity shop in the country of course.

No, nor me. However, the local ones to me have sections for baby clothing and notices in the window that they need more.

JudithDunbar · 31/08/2025 14:32

I wouldn't sell them, what if one of the people on the WhatsApp group saw them on vented? Mortifying for you, it would look so grabby and desperate.

Yes, you're right, they store for the appropriate season.

That's great then if they can sell them! My local ones won't take them, nor will local baby bank most of the time.
I've some experience at the other end of the rag/used clothing trade, and baby clothes aren't wanted there either generally. It's a shame.

WellyBellyBoo · 31/08/2025 14:48

I'd definitely sell on the basis it's the most likely wah to avoid them going in landfill. Give the proceeds to charity, then you won't feel bad about it.

OliviaBonas · 31/08/2025 15:16

You can totally sell them. There was nothing to stop this mum doing the same. If you can be bothered to photograph them, list them, package them and post them then you get the money. She made the choice not to bother and to gift them instead.

That does seem a shame. So many needy people.

Maybe she wanted to help someone instead of being selfish as OP?

There's far more baby clothes than there are babies.

confusedlots · 31/08/2025 16:13

Separate them into a few smaller bags and take them to H@M. You’ll get a £5 voucher for each bag to use in H&M. I usually use the voucher when getting the kids new clothes. Saves the hassle of selling on Vinted.

Well. It must be area dependent.
