To be upset I lost my sons umbilical cord and some baby teeth?

Currently renovating house and I have misplaced (but possibly accidentally thrown away) a container containing my son’s umbilical cord clip which I’ve saved for years and some baby teeth. I still have some of his milk teeth in his first tooth/first curl box but I stupidly didn’t put the others in there. Spent ages looking all over the house for them, everywhere I can think of and cannot find them. I have his siblings’ things still. Realistically is this going to bother him or me in the future or am I just hormonal (am currently pregnant) and massively overthinking things?

We were given a piece of my DS' cord and it had been dried out into the shape of a heart. We threw it away as it was very creepy (after googling whether it would be useful to harvest stem cells from in the future if he needs treatment).

My DDs are young adults and I think they would freak out if I presented them with their umbilical cords and baby teeth.

I have a friend who has the placentas from each of her 4 children who are now in their 20s and 30s They are in her freezer.

Imagine if she went on holiday and her freezer breaks down while she’s away 🤢

Biosblbay · 29/08/2025 08:49

I am exactly the same as you. I am VERY sentimental so I would be devastated if I lost anything that I had kept for memories. I currently have a 7 week old baby, when my son (first born) was born I kept the newspaper from his DOB, I totally forgot to do this for my new baby and literally cried for days and ended up frantically on the hunt for a newspaper with her DOB so totally get it! I was worried that if I didn’t have a newspaper for her she would think I love/ favour my first born more 🤣🙈 You will also be very hormonal so that will have a part in how you are feeling. But I am sure they will turn up eventually, they can’t have gone too far, but your child will not be upset that when they are older that you have misplaced their teeth and first curl. Try not to beat yourself up over it too much x

BuzzYourGirlfriendWooof · 29/08/2025 08:49

My mum kept my baby teeth in her jewellery box; I used to love looking through her jewellery, and hated that I’d be confronted by my old teeth any time I wanted to do so.

It remains a very pervasive memory, and not for a good reason.

I appreciate it’s sad for you as you have the things belonging to your other children, but I wouldn’t worry too much.

ObtuseMoose · 29/08/2025 08:50

Usually the only people who keep body parts are serial killers.

Omg that is grim

op I wouldn’t worry. What are you going to do with body parts anyway? Your DC won’t be delighted to be presented with them when they’re older

ILoveWhales · 29/08/2025 08:50

You've just made me remember my mum kept my clip, but thankfully not cord piece.

I remember looking at it as a child. Now as an adult no idea where that went. Meh.

Omeara · 29/08/2025 08:52

What do you think your children will want them for? They’re a memory for you, not them.

augustusglupe · 29/08/2025 08:57

Oh well I get it OP 🥹 I’ve got the clip, teeth, the newspaper from the day DD was born & allsorts. Realistically though DD, who’s 36, wouldn’t care less & I think I keep so much stuff because my mum threw away pretty much everything.

CreepyCoupe · 29/08/2025 08:59

I had kept our kids’ baby teeth. One of my sons recently opened up one of the boxes and accidentally dropped it on the floor. All of the teeth fell through the gaps in the timber floor. A fairly gruesome discovery awaits someone in the future.

I know I shouldn’t laugh, but thats made me chuckle!

Something similar happened to me, only I was the one who dropped the box! And to make it even more creepy for the future house owner, several years earlier we'd placed a time capsule under the boards there. The poor future owner is going to lift the floorboards and find photos of small children, with baby teeth strewn over the envelope like some diabolical ritual!

But to answer the OP, no, I don't miss them. At the time I put them away they were laden with emotions and memories, but Time has moved on, the children have grown and other things are more important.

Dolphin78 · 29/08/2025 17:54

I was always happiest when they told me they had accidentally swallowed the wobbly tooth..my ds seems to have keep some of his and now and again surprises me with one and demands 2 quid as “the fairies are suffering from inflation too you know!”

Hollybollyhughes · 29/08/2025 17:56

I am not a sentimental person so struggle to understand why anyone would keep items like this. Good riddance, sounds minging anyway. Remove them all, good clear out and no remorse. Well done!

Gnarab24 · 29/08/2025 17:58

I had no idea keeping umbilical cords was a thing, that’s absolutely rank.

lifeonthelane · 29/08/2025 18:00

Well. My children's teeth and umbilical cords went in the bin so....

Katflapkit · 29/08/2025 07:55

Bloody hell - what are you doing, saving parts to build another one?

OMG 😂

Laughs in also-saved-umbilical-cord-for-unknown-reason!

Thisgrillisonfire · 29/08/2025 18:01

You kept your old umbilical cord in a box. That’s fucking gross

InterIgnis · 29/08/2025 18:04

Had my parents ever presented me with a collection of teeth accompanied by a side of desiccated organ, I’d be questioning why they thought taking inspiration from serial killers was a good idea.

Howtodealwithkids · 29/08/2025 18:04

some of my children are at an age where they are still losing teeth- obviously the tooth fairy takes them away!! So that means they are meticulously wrapped in toilet paper, shoved in drawers that seemed appropriate at the time the fairy showed up! I quite often find a drawer with a neatly folded piece of tissue and wonder when do I throw them away- the answer is probably once they finish begging from the tooth fairy 🤣 one tooth is in my underwear drawer next to a small pot of my nans ashes (I used some ashes to make jewellery!) for no reason except it was to hide it as no sane person would go in there!! Now every time I open the drawer I apologise to my nan and the kid whose tooth it is 🤣but still am yet to remove it 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

EnjoythemoneyJane · 29/08/2025 18:21

I kept a few of my kids’ milk teeth and locks of their baby hair, but I’m now having a clear out and not really sure what the hell to do with them - there’s zero point in toting about bits of your children in a box that nobody ever looks at. My grown up kids certainly don’t want them (in fact were a bit ‘eeeuuuw’ over the fact I’d kept the teeth!).

I find photos - and especially film, where their littler selves come back to life and I can listen to their tiny voices - so much more nostalgic and meaningful, and those are the things the kids themselves also treasure.

But crispy umbilical cords, OP?! Sorry to be blunt when you’re hormonal, but that’s gopping 😂 - literally nobody will want those things. Just throw the others away too, then you don’t have to worry about it.

MellersSmellers · 29/08/2025 18:21

When I showed my DS the box with his milk teeth he was totally grossed out!

WinterFaye2 · 29/08/2025 18:32

I hear you OP. I’m having a similar situation with teeth and first shoes! OH has also ‘misplaced’ a USB with some school portraits on…

I’ve reframed my upset by thinking if my house was being destroyed what would I grab before we left. My answer would be if we were all out safe, nothing else really matters.

It’s emotional but in the grand scheme of things, really not important x
