There are fruit flies brazenly fucking in my kitchen right now, on the net over my fruit bowl. I have been so proactive this year in preventing them and we've hardly had any until yesterday afternoon and now they are bloody everywhere. I've put mr muscle pipe unblocker down all the plug holes. cleaned and checked anywhere they could be coming from. I have my vinegar traps out and a handheld hoover but still they come to fornicate over my fruit bowl, bastards!

Get a bottle of cheap white vinegar, stick a fork in the spout to make a bigger hole, they'll fly in, can't get out.
I have a few, most are floating in white vinegar.

MsSmartShoes · 28/08/2025 22:36

They have suddenly appeared in my kitchen too. They love the compost bin. I’ll empty it, scrub it, leave it a day; but as soon as so much as a teabag goes in - they are back!

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 28/08/2025 22:39

I’ve bought a new kitchen compost bin which seems to have a better seal.

Hoardasurass · 28/08/2025 22:39

Get a couple of pitcher plants they'll eat the little horny bastards

EmeraldShamrock000 · 28/08/2025 22:40

Another tip, a spoonful of honey in the compost bin. They'll get stuck in it.

Redbookworm · 28/08/2025 22:41

Apple cider vinegar! We have loads. Bur this seems to be doing the trick!

SalmonEile · 28/08/2025 22:43

They love wine too

bumblebramble · 28/08/2025 22:43

Block the drains overnight,
Check every source of standing water (house plants, coffee maker, iron, washing machine, tumble drier)
I’d chuck the fruit, wash the bowl and wait a few days to replace it.

deckchairmayhem · 28/08/2025 22:44

Might be time for a medication review 😜🤣🤣

Mathsdebator · 28/08/2025 22:46

We're over run with flies of wvery description at the moment. I changed the kitchen bin on Tuesday last week. On Thursday I went to put something in it and discovered maggots!

We've never had them before and it was hideous - they were in the metal corners and crevices of the bin lid. It took 2 bleach and soak attempts to get them all 💩😭

Amammai · 28/08/2025 22:51

we Suddenly have them too! We have a little compost caddy in the kitchen. We regularly change the liner and filter and wash the whole caddy out but the little fruit flies keep coming back as if by magic! Never had a problem with them before apart from in really really hot weather if we haven’t changed the bag every day. Why are they everywhere this year?

CaramelPecan · 28/08/2025 23:06

The food waste bins from TikTok that you can hang over a cupboard door inside a cupboard (I use my under sink cupboard as its a big double width one and the bin fits on one side) has been a game changer this summer for not having flies and wasps attracted by DC not putting the lid properly, or leaving it overflowing, on the one I used to have on the counter top. Especially as it’s been so hot and no one ever empties it except me!

You can get them from Amazon too but more expensive I think. Best and only ever TikTok purchase, the lid stays open while filling it and I can just shove in waste straight from the sink. It’s also shut in a dark cupboard so hasn’t got as smelly in the heat and I do a lot of juicing so put lots of pulp in it.

I used to have fruit flies in my last house as neighbour had fruit trees and had a lot of dropped fruit in the garden and which also dropped into mine. Could that be an issue?

Vinegar worked to an extent but they still kept coming until it got colder. I haven’t had any in this house thankfully!

Mossstitch · 28/08/2025 23:13

Tiny bit of wine in bottom of bottle with cling film over top with tiny holes in it, they go in but can't get out...........never seen so many as this year 🤷

Hankunamatata · 28/08/2025 23:16

Apple cider vinegar trap

Take all fruit, wash it and keep it in cupboard or fridge until you get rid of the buggers

Pryceosh1987 · 28/08/2025 23:22

I am witnessing them recently myself. Do you have open bin bags? Any small hole in a bin or bag is enough to keep them staying.

jodolun · 28/08/2025 23:58

Thanks everyone for the tips, I will be sure to enforce any I haven't already been doing. I've hoovered up a bunch of them and its looking quiet at the moment. Will see if we have any more tomorrow.

They are a proper nuisance. I have moved my food waste bin into the porch and pop outside with it if I need to put something in.
I also got some sticky fly traps from amazon, they are yellow cardboard shapes with sticky stuff that you can stick in a plant pot and they attract the flys, they are good for fungus gnats too.

Usuallychill · 29/08/2025 00:22

Echo the apple cider vinegar solution.
My dad had an infestation a few years back, but as his eyesight was so poor her couldn't see how out of control they were.
I think i just put some in a jar with a squirt of washing up liquid to thicken/trap.
Highly effective - I was pleasantly surprised!

Shitmonger · 29/08/2025 02:16

There is one singular fruit fly hanging out in my office and I am about to burn the entire building down.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2025 02:18

rinse off bananas. They often have eggs on them.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 29/08/2025 05:29

I just put a ramekin of apple cider vinegar by fruit bowl and bananas and they dive in. Change it every day.

OhNoNotSusan · 29/08/2025 05:57

mine seem to have gone strangely
otherwise how about fly paper?

FlourandFlowers · 29/08/2025 06:01

Fruit Ninja traps. They work a treat. Definitely available on Amazon.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 29/08/2025 06:05

I have them too, so do my parents. I have no food out, I washed the bin and food waste caddy out on Wednesday, by Wednesday evening they were back. I wash the caddy after every empty, the main bin once a week.

I bought some lovely sunflowers last Friday by Saturday I had to throw them out as the bloody flies were having a party on their stalks.

PinchOfVom · 29/08/2025 06:20

I’ve just realised I haven’t seen any in months and I think it could be because I decided having one massive bin in the kitchen was unhygienic and pointless as we recycle so much - plus bin juice trauma 🤮- I now have a small contained and take the liner out before I go to bed every day, it’s been a game changer for me but I never thought about the fruit flies. We don’t need massive bins! Maybe consider that too
