Was I slightly rude?

Context - I had a bumped into a soon-to-be former colleague (superior) outside the office. I am about to leave next month, they only ever come in about once every 6 weeks for meetings.

He was about to leave, I was on my way in.
We only spoke for a minute or so about the meeting, then he said, ‘Well I’ll see you soon’ (he knows I’m leaving). I replied, without thinking, ‘oh you won’t see me soon I’m leaving….’ I was smiling when I said it though, not a snappy tone of voice or anything. Is that rude though?

I'm not sure I understand how the voting is supposed to go? I voted you're BU because I don't think you were rude.

Also I think you're overthinking it!

You are massively overthinking this. Why would it be rude… and even if it was why do you care if you are leaving?

This I wouldn't give it another thought.

Motomum23 · 29/08/2025 13:38

No you weren't rude

specialist1209 · 31/08/2025 14:07

No that is not rude at all if the workplace is very unfriendly and full of toxicity and bullies you have ever right to leave because the employer or whoever is bullying is giving the company a very bad name and nobody wants to work with a bum of a boss trust me I had lots it's probably because u are very clever and talented which is a very rare gift to see in people.

GleisZwei · 31/08/2025 14:11

'See you later' is a way of saying bye, it doesn't necessarily mean they will literally see you later.
Did he already know you were leaving? If so, then no need to remind him.
If no, then it's an abrupt way of telling him.
TBH, while I don't think it was rude as such, it was possibly a bit unnecessary, kurt, or even a tad smug.

Hairshare · 31/08/2025 15:04

It’s fine I expect he forgot at once.

HevenlyMeS · 31/08/2025 16:19

Yes I completely concur with everyone mentioning you don't seem rude
However if this male sincerely knew you were leaving, then he was obviously being sarcastic - Unless he was hoping you'd change your mind & remain working there🙏

Same here!

not rude at all. You were passing by - what else could you say?

He definitely wasn’t being sarcastic, as to whether he wants me to stay or not? No idea… I couldn’t stay as my internship had ended and there was no position for me…

Oh I'm sorry I think I must've misunderstood your comment as I thought you'd mentioned that he knew you were leaving? 🤔So surely if he did know you were leaving, how could ernestly claim to see you soon or even later, if it's the case that he knew!?
This was the reason I was wondering if it could've been mentioned in sarcasm? 🙏

That’s fair, but he didn’t sound sarcastic at all.

The only other possibility which springs to mind, is that he might've possibly been hoping to meet/see you outside of work?
Sometimes we can only go by our instincts & intuition
This type of thing happens, sadly even if some folks in professional positions, know we're already spoken for
It's difficult to really know being's we weren't present
But I can't think of anything else which might make sense
Wishing you & yours all the best 🙏

Sylvie1997 · 09/09/2025 20:42

@HevenlyMeS He could bump into me as he visits my city fairly regularly, but he doesn’t know whether or not I’ll still be here or whether I’ll move away….

How have you even given this a second thought, never mind posting it on Mumsnet, and then also bumping because nobody replied?!

Notashamed13 · 09/09/2025 21:10

Much ado about nothing. It's a turn of phrase. See you soon. See you later. Catch you in a bit. Etc. Etc.etc

Because I just don’t like being rude with people.

I don't think you seemed rude, just understandably, naturally happy about leaving & it was excitement you most likely found it difficult to contain 💚
