To ask for job interview advice?

Posted in S and B but no replies.

I have a job interview next week for a receptionist position in a dermatology clinic offering in depth treatments, and I’m a little out of my depth! I really really want the job, the hours work perfectly for me and it’s literally at the end of my road

I have a background in reception work so feel confident in my admin abilities and I’m confident in interviews. However my idea of a skincare routine is a bit of face scrub and some moisturiser. There’s a decent chance they’ll think I’m a client when I walk in as I’m not exactly polished!

I’ll Google all the treatments (and the company) to get a firmer idea of what they all are but does anyone know what else I can do to maximise my chances or what they might be looking for at the interview for a job in this area?
TIA

All the info you need should be in the application information.

I don't work in that area, but my suggestion would be to 'look the part'. I very rarely wear make up and my skin care routine is... somewhat lacking. No way I'd get offered front of house in a beauty-related industry.

I'm not saying be untrue to yourself, but if you know how to make your skin glow and don a full face whilst looking natural, then I think it will go down well!

Yes, it does explain the job description.

I’m asking for any advice regarding the industry as I’m not someone with a lot of experience with dermatology treatments. I can google (and will do) but hearing from other people with more experience and being prepared may be the difference between me being offered the position or not.

Thank you.

I’ve learnt I don’t suit a full face of makeup so I think I usually look best just with primer, light powder and a coat of mascara.

I’m the same, skin care routine wise. Very low maintenance. I’m confident in my ability to do the job, just don’t want my lack of ‘polishing’ to stand against me and would like to present myself well.

My hope would be that your ability is what counts - your sparkly face can't answer a phone or book an appointment on its own!

Stand tall and be confident. Good luck!

I think "polish" will be part of the role. It's like receptionists in dentists always have perfect teeth. They are selling an image and you will need to embody that image.

I’d like to think so too!

Thank you!

Don’t get me wrong, I scrub up ok. I’m going to get my hair done ahead of time, manicure etc.

It’ll just be obvious that I don’t have any treatments or anti aging work done.

Im not sure it’s about looking your best, more looking the part

ive been to several of these places and I wouldn’t say the staff necessarily look their best. The look is quite specific, it’s highly polished, full make up, very put together. Not at all natural and I dare say most would look ‘better’ without it

are you able to pull together that sort of look?

BeMellowAquaSquid · 28/08/2025 19:06

Regular candidate interviewer here…

Be interested

Have 3 good questions to ask - DO NOT discuss salary

Clean hands and nails are a must.

Don’t fidget.

Don’t go off piste with an answer unless you can swing it back to the question being asked.

Make them remember you, wear a bright top or something different. If I’m seeing 4 candidates in a day I’ll remember them as red shirt lady, or lady with the nice lipstick.

Back yourself!

Hmmm, I can probably look put together.

My hair is always held back with a clip so it’s tidy. I can dress nicely.

I really do look awful with full foundation make up though. I have good skin so I can do eye make up and a lip gloss.

This is really helpful, thank you!

I can go for a statement necklace, I have a few nice ones.
