Dogs in Supermarkets

When did this become acceptable (assistance dogs excepted)? Increasingly I am seeing pooches in supermarkets.

The icing on the cake was today - I witnessed a chihuahua being pushed around in its bed inside a shopping trolley. Absolutely disgusting. The next person to use that trolley will be loading their food items onto the crumbs from a dog bed.

I presume it’s allowed as the owner pushed the dog past several shelf stackers and nothing was said. German supermarket whose name rhymes with ‘piddle’ in case you’re wondering.

Do you have a strange notion that supermarkets trolleys are clean/hygenic?

they're not? Foxes, Rats, Birds & other creatures sleep in them, climb all over them!

I've yet to see a dog in a supermarket in the UK

theonlyonestillawake · 28/08/2025 03:02

I can top this. I was in Morrisons and a couple were being told that they can't have a cat (in a carrier) in their trolley. The couple then replied "well what do you want us to do? We've just had her put down and need a few bits before we get the bus home to bury her"... a dead cat in Mozzas, that they were taking home on the bus.

I love my dog, and am one if the annoying people that take him to dog friendly pubs and cafes, but he absolutely should not be in a supermarket.

ramonaquimby · 28/08/2025 03:42

Gross. I've seen this a few times. At at Heathrow arrivals. Dogs are taking over!

Eviebeans · 28/08/2025 04:15

I think we’re seeing far too many dogs in places that they shouldn’t be in- I have a dog myself and don’t take him to pubs or cafes etc
I think generally he is better off at home especially when it’s too hot/very busy
I also base it on my feelings that I don’t like to be too near strange dogs in cafes etc

littleblackdress26 · 28/08/2025 04:27

It's nasty I've seen a dog in a shopping trolley in marks and Spencers and a dog doing a poo in H and M . Some pet owners are so entitled and have lost the plot .

Glitchymn1 · 28/08/2025 04:57

I hate to break it to you but supermarkets are havens for rodents, they’re all over warehouses and car parks. Trolleys aren’t something I’d equate with being clean either.
I’ve never seen a dog, not even an assistance dog in a supermarket.

sweetpickle2 · 28/08/2025 05:08

Trolleys will have all sorts of animal crumbs and dirt and piss on them, not to mention germs from other shoppers, do you think they are ever washed?

Unless you’re opening up all the food you buy out of the packaging and throwing it loose into the trolley to eat from there you’ll be fine.

SunnyD4ys · 28/08/2025 05:58

@Glitchymn1 @SummerFrog25 until last weekend I would have said the same as you about never having seen a dog in a supermarket but on Saturday I was quite surprised to see a woman with her dog in my local Tesco

I didn't even know that was allowed, she was up and down the aisles so not just popping in for one thing or to customer services

Bodyshopdewberry · 28/08/2025 06:02

I'm just imagining my crazy spaniel in the bacon and sausage aisle. It would not go well!

It would be a great day for you dog though! 🤣

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 28/08/2025 06:35

Recently I saw a collie in my local Tesco’s. I asked the staff is this allowed? It isn’t but no one did anything either. My husband banned me from saying anything directly (spoil sport!), probably a good decision but animals in food places should be banned.

Climbingrosexx · 28/08/2025 06:48

I get that and I'm a dog lover, but by the same token I also find d it disgusting when kids are sat in the trolley with their dirty shoes

It has just occurred to me reading your post, that actually I rarely go into a supermarket these days! I get a Tesco delivery most weeks & only pop into.another one (waitrise. Sainsbury, Lidl, etc) on ths rare occasion I.fancy something different.

but my point remains the cleanliness of trolleys still stands & a dog walking around wouldn't bother me, it's not like they're able to lick the actual food. Their paws are no dirtier than people's shoes.

Seriously, you think a kids shoes are the dirtiest thing that happens to a trolley? 🤣🤣🤣

Following on from my earlier comment I would add that I have been on holiday this week in the UK and the dog was with us on occasion when we were out and about
I have never previously experienced so many occasions when people felt free to stroke or touch the dog without asking (adults and children) or having asked if it was okay to stroke him and being told no he would prefer it if you didn’t (adults) went ahead and did it anyway

Zempy · 28/08/2025 07:37

It’s completely normal to see dogs in supermarkets where I live and has been for a few years. I am South coast.

Also see them in fashion shops.

Doesn’t bother me.

You might be able to get a rough date by searching MN for the many threads on this subject and checking when the first one was posted.

I had someone pick my dog up yesterday and start cuddling her. Never met him before and he had no idea if she was friendly or if she liked being picked up. Don't understand what goes through some people's minds!

I hear you OP and it’s not just supermarkets, I work in a pharmacy and people bring in their dogs all the time. Once a dog peed against one of our waiting room chairs, another time one was howling the entire time. I’ve put a sign up to please respect customers with allergens and who suffer with conditions like asthma but we also have staff members who are genuinely terrified of dogs and cannot serve customers while dogs are in the building. Where has the respect gone for others? Not one of the dog owners have ever asked us if it’s okay to bring the dogs inside. We have carpets as well so I find it very unhygienic.

I know dog owners feel targeted on MN a lot but I just wish some would take note - if you have ever taken a dog into a doctors surgery, please don’t do it again for medical reasons if nothing else. It’s just common sense.

ExtraOnions · 28/08/2025 08:10

Fur-babies are allowed to go anywhere … regardless about how anyone else might feel, the needs of the Dog Mum/Dad is paramount.

The fur-baby can’t be left at home, as it’s “anxious” (maybe because it’s not been trained properly, by don’t let the fur parent hear you say that)

The fur-baby is much much much more important than anyone who has an allergy to dogs, and anyone who “just doesn’t like dogs” is clearly a psychopath.

The fur-baby should always be compared to other children “my fur-baby is better behaved / cleaner / less noisy” than a child….other than when it’s barking, reacting, and shitting on the floor.

The happiness of the fur-baby should be everyone else’s number one concern.

Harbourofdiscovery · 28/08/2025 08:48

I went sofa shopping the other day, saw a dog on a lead in DFS, then said dog and owners appeared on the next store, Nattuzi which was mainly leather sofas.

I turned round to hear the dog owners saying, good boy make yourself comfortable, as the dog got up on the sofas and lying down rolling about.

Apparently they needed to make sure dear fido like the sofa as well.

No I dont want to try out new sofas that dogs have been rolling about on. What next the mattress section.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/08/2025 09:01

Absolutely gross. It's bad enough having dogs in cafes. I really strongly dislike the smell of dogs. I'm autistic and my sense of smell and hearing are hypersensitive.

Audiwannabe · 28/08/2025 09:50

Expecting that people will listen to staff even if they say something is unrealistic really, there's very little respect for fellow citizens in general and anyone in a service position seems to be a rung lower than that to many people. Side effect of the "I pay your wages and I am a customer, therefore always right and can do what I want" culture.

I love dogs, I have always had them, in fact I like spending time with most animals because it brings me a bit of peace and calm. I'm not the only person in the world though, and society works by cooperation and consideration, only more and more people seem to demand it's shown to them, while refusing point blank to do the same.

A supermarket, clothes shop or tourist attraction in 25° heat is not a great experience for a dog, and there's no need for them to be there. But people are selfish, you need to adjust your life in order to care for an animal properly and people want the dog, but they want everyone else, and the dog, to adjust so they don't have to. If you've got a dog and it can't be left for whatever reason, then you take it places it can go, not expect everyone else to work around you because you can't be arsed.
