Just did a quote with Bupa £103 per month. Does this sound reasonable?

I've just turned 40 and want to start preparing for the future 👵 but I didn't think it would cost this much 😭 per month

Do you have any preexisting conditions or a complicated medical history at all? This would make it more expensive and actually in comparison to what our US counterparts have to pay it's actually cheap.

I wouldn't have thought it was to far off the mark, my parents paid for mine after university and that was about £60 about 30 years ago.

You don't declare pre existing conditions for the quote so that has not raised it. I only have asthma, just thought it would be lower £60 would be a dream.

Cheap. Take it but Bupa doesn't cover every consultant

Can you recommend anyone better?

You will have to declare pre-existing conditions, and they will be excluded. That quote is really good btw. When it costs £200 just for a consultation, or £500 for blood tests, or £850 for an MRI, or £15k for an operation, £100 a month isn't much!

Alysskea · 27/08/2025 22:32

At work they subsidise our healthcare and it was still about £700 a year so this sounds ‘normal’ in the industry. Not that I’m an expert.

KOALABEAR12 · 27/08/2025 22:32

Try Aviva, a lot of consultants won’t do BUPA work now as they won’t pay their fees.

Jc2001 · 27/08/2025 22:34

I would be pretty much disabled now if it wasn't for Bupa. I had a back operation that the NHS would have taken 2 years at least to see to. It took a couple of weeks with Bupa. My consultant told me the longer it took to operate, the more likely I would have permanent and disabling nerve damage and mobility issues.

I'm lucky though, I get it through work, but after that experience I would pay.

Ahsheeit · 27/08/2025 23:08

Sounds about right, age and where you live are factored into the price. Medical inflation is also double standard inflation, plus 12.5% insurance premium tax.

Jumpingthruhoops · 28/08/2025 15:16

Sound fairly reasonable to me. Think I pay about £140 for me and DH. I couldn't be without private health insurance now. Worth every penny.
The thought of needing to go to an NHS hospital fills me with dread. So I think it's a small price to pay for piece of mind.

AXA are pretty decent.

amylou8 · 28/08/2025 15:20

I pay £54 a month for Bupas comprehensive cover. I'm 49 with no health conditions.

Artandchocolate · 28/08/2025 15:35

That seems very high, we pay £87 for a family of 3 with BUPA. I suppose it depends on the policy, though ours is pretty comprehensive.

HappiestSleeping · 28/08/2025 15:44

I have Bupa. It is worth it. I pay around £100 per month, but our overall bill is higher as my wife has cancer. Even having been dealing with that over 8 years, the premiums are only £1400 per month.

Unfortunately, she is at the end of the road now, but I am convinced she wouldn't have made it this far without Bupa.

Otins · 28/08/2025 15:45

That’s a good deal in my experience. Go via a broker as they have wider access to insurers / policies.

tillyandmilly · 28/08/2025 15:46

I am with bupa - £92 per month - 57 years old - no medical issues - not on any medication - excess £100

84wood · 28/08/2025 15:48

The only insurer that will cover any consultant is vitality but it is super expensive especially if you are accessing central London hospitals. I pay over £400 for myself and my child. I'm not yet 50! All other insurers, to my knowledge, will have some version of fee assured consultants that limits what the consultants are able to charge insurers. Research well and shop very wisely. Private medical is amazing but you need to know what you're buying. My family have not used the nhs for over 20 years. We would only need it for critical emergencies which I guess that is what our taxes are for.
