To consider singing lessons in my 40s?

I love singing, just for fun.

I can hold a tune but my voice is pretty weak and starts to hurt after a while (belting out songs in the car - I wouldn't inflict it on anyone else!)

So does anyone else do this or is it a bit frivolous at this point?

I feel like it's the first time I can afford to do something like this for myself.

No real advice, but I'm thinking of this too.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 27/08/2025 14:45

God, yes, go for it. Life's short, enjoy yourself!

loveyouradvice · 27/08/2025 14:45

Go for it - singing is joyful - investing in singing lessons could be one of the best investments you make!

I did in my 40s and both loved the lesson and loved the voice I now have

TheKeatingFive · 27/08/2025 14:45

I think if you'd get something out of it, it's worth it, not frivolous at all

PiggieWig · 27/08/2025 14:47

I’d love to learn to sing nicely. What I lack in tone I make up for in enthusiasm!

@loveyouradvice did lessons change your voice drastically?

CarolineKnappShappeyShipwright · 27/08/2025 14:47

Do it! I've learnt to play the drums and really enjoyed the challenge. I've considered singing lessons too but my commitments this year are such I doubt I'll have time to practice. So yes get stuck in and then join a choir!

mediummumma · 27/08/2025 14:49

Do it! I started piano lessons when I was 44 so I don’t see why you shouldn’t take singing lessons!

Are you serious? Of course you go for it! If it gives you joy, then it's worth it.

Did it make a real difference to your voice? Hope you don't mind me asking, but what did you notice changing?

Thanks for the feedback so far. Quite overwhelmingly positive! ❤️

Go for it! It will definitely make a difference and if you love singing, you'll definitely be glad you had some lessons

Octavia64 · 27/08/2025 15:07

I had my first singing lesson yesterday!

I’m not very good but it was so much fun and do nice to do something for myself.

QueenOfToast · 27/08/2025 15:12

I don’t know what singing you want to do but I would recommend joining something like rock choir. You’ll do vocal warm ups and learn some singing technique as part of your session that you can practice at home.

Not suitable if you want to do classical or opera type stuff, but I find a bit of group singing to be very good for the soul.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 27/08/2025 15:15

I was in my 40s when I started singing lessons. Then I joined a choir. Then I joined another choir. It's one of the best things I've ever done (I'm 61 now)! Go for it!

RetiredMan · 27/08/2025 15:32

I wish I could sing. I've always had a terrible singing voice. I downloaded an app that was supposed to help you. It started by conducting a test to measure vocal range. Apparently about 2 octaves is typical. My measured range was well short of 1 octave. I gave up.

PoshDuckQuarkQuark · 27/08/2025 15:34

Absolutely do it! I started drum lessons in my 40s and love it!

How did you find a teacher?

I think Opera is far far beyond me haha! I like that suggestion, thank you.

I did that test also. Apparently Adele suits my natural range but I never got any further than that.

OP, I think Rock Choir do a first free 'taster' session so you could go along and see what you thought without any financial obligation. I was in a Rock Choir for a while, but didn't love it so concentrated on the other choirs 😂

As to finding a teacher, my London borough has a list online.

Steph341 · 27/08/2025 15:48

I think that's a really lovely idea. I can't sing for toffee sadly.

CoffeeCantata · 27/08/2025 16:06

Absolutely go for it - you’ll get hooked!😀❤️

Lazygardener · 27/08/2025 16:09

Not singing, but I took up a musical instrument in my 40s, and it was a great decision. Apart from learning the instrument itself, I met many new friends and had great fun. You are absolutely not being frivolous. Go for it!

smallslyfox · 27/08/2025 16:13

Singing is pretty much scientifically proven to make you happier so if you can get better at it and dedicate time to singing I say go for it! And learning anything is good for the mind and soul!

Blueuggboots · 27/08/2025 16:17

Go for it! I had singing lessons and loved it. So therapeutic.
