Who set up class/displays over the summer as a Teacher? Is this still happening ? Organisation, decoration and assembly of the classroom space e.g. moving classrooms, moving classroom furniture, putting up and taking down classroom displays.

I accepted a long term job, I was planning to go in and set up the class- but the class I have been given is meant to be the model class and was to be painted and redecorated over the summer and is still due a second coat of paint. Now, I spoke to deputy who said it is okay to start on the INSET days - the decoration with my TA. However, I am receiving a email from the eyfs lead who basically is trying to say that it will be ready 2 days before INSET and i should basically as my TA to come and help me and go in and sort it out. Bear in mind this is brand new displays, moving furniture and I havent even got a computer login yet. Now deputy is saying Inset day is okay - eyfs lead is saying - you need to come in earlier because we arranged 4 student visits on Wednesday? Now is that my fault? Im not available anymore 2 days before and I dont know my way around the school to even go in? What would you do? I thought we didnt have to do displays anymore - at least as much as from scratch like I amexpected to?

I think the TA may only be paid for 39 weeks of the year, ( paid monthly tho over 52 weeks ) some schools down here have decreased that to 38 weeks a year thus no working on inset days.
Thus it is unlikely the TA will come in 4 days before the start of term, unless you are able to arrange for the TA to be paid ' overtime ' and I doubt that.
Besides the TA has a life and may well have plans made already.

Is the deputy higher up to the eyfs lead ?

I moved classrooms next week. Took stuff up to other room but it still has the shit if someone else in so my stuff is all over the desks in the room. Not doing any displays etc as I am retiring at Christmas. Only taking what I need from old classroom. Secondary so needs are different. Haven’t done a thing in the holidays.

As a TA you could ask but the answer is likely to be no. I have my own children and wouldn't just be able to magic up childcare for a day I don't normally work.
Also as another poster has said TAs don't get paid inset days in a lot of schools anyway (mine doesn't) so if there is one the school want us to attend (safeguarding for example) we are offered pay or TOIL for that day. If you are asking the TA to come in would you be able to offer them that, or are the school suggesting you ask as the TA will feel mean not helping you and that they can't really say no, even if they won't be paid for it.

I have never had to ask a TA and would not even plan to, as I know they have a much more important life outside of the classroom and it is so unfair the eyfs lead is even asking if I have contacted her to come in and help me. Usually i would go in and do it myself but I have no logins for anything- I have no idea where to find backing paper etc I literally have no idea who is who and what is where.

Deputy Head outranks EYFS lead 🙂‍↔️ Show the EY person the DH email.

We all had to move classrooms at the end of the summer term due to some mass reorganisation. We have an off timetable/arts week so lots of us got stuff at least in the right rooms during that. There was no expectation for anyone to be in over the summer. I did a little bit on results day when I was in (am secondary) but will do the majority of sorting on INSET day.

I don’t think you can ask a TA to come in. Are you actually paid to be there yet yourself?

Not paid myself either. I don't even get sick pay for at least a term, I'm just a long term supply teacher they took on last min end of July.

100% do not go in. Could get dodgy in terms of insurance if anything happened to you while sorting displays for example.
Explain to early years person that you don’t actually work for the school yet and will be sorting everything on INSET.

theresnolimits · 27/08/2025 14:21

Hi Z
Sorry, I can’t do those days. But as agreed with DH I will do the room on the INSET days.

I also don’t want to start on wrong terms, and cause her to dislike me and treat me wrong because of this, I really cannot work with another rude EYFS lead. So I plan to say I made other arrangements and I am not even available anymore.

Please bear in mind that if you are not supposed to be there as a paid employee you will not be covered by employer liability insurance. I once had an accident moving tables, not great.

Mama2many73 · 27/08/2025 15:26

As a teacher married to a teacher we would be in each school dor at least 3 days sorting out our classes.

I no longer teach (foster carer) and dh is a HT but on Wednesday I'm spending the day in his school(already been in 2 days) to help the staff get classes sorted/dogsbody as they've had work done over the 6weeks hols.
I think most staff still go in, including tge amazing TAs as it makes the job easier if everything is up and running.

Istilldontlikeolives · 27/08/2025 21:16

Your EYFS lead is being very unfair. You don't even know the TA you will be working with do you? Have you even been in communication with her? Unless it is somehow the case that TAs are expected to go in before the holiday it is unfair to ask her/him unless they are an eager beaver who likes to do that kind of thing. The school should have given you more warning if they expected you to set 2 specific days aside.

Talipesmum · 27/08/2025 21:22

Totally unreasonable for them to suggest you have to go in early without warning to prepare for a parent visit. Surely they could go and look at a classroom that’s had an existing teacher in it already, rather than yours which is not fully painted yet.

But I don’t know who else other than the class teacher would do the displays etc? What do you mean by you thought you didn’t have to do displays any more from scratch?

Slooped · 27/08/2025 21:24

Don't go in. As LT supply I wouldn't even bother much with displays. In EYFS, I'd imagine you could quickly get loads of work up if you can just back the boards on the insets. You'll probably only have a few hours though by the time you've done all the safeguarding training, diary dates, policy stuff etc.

Teachers aren't actually meant to do displays anymore but of course do. TAs are fully timetabled during the school day and aren't paid after school so there's no one else to do them. I don't change them nearly as much as when I started teaching.

ProudCat · 27/08/2025 21:29

You're not yet employed by them, so not covered on their employees insurance, which means you can't be in the building.

I'm a teacher, permanent, did go in over summer to sort out my classroom (because I can't face humping desks around on INSET), didn't do any displays.
