To get really annoyed when someone parks next to me in a quiet car park!

It really bugs me when people do this. Today I’m taking my ds swimming. Quiet car park so I park with plenty of space between bays so it’s easy to get out. Someone decides to park next to me once we’ve stopped so it’s a pita to get out! Why make it harder when there’s plenty of free spaces!

My (dreadful) driving instructor actually tried to teach me to only use other cars to park/line it up. I asked, 'well what if the car park is empty?' He shrugged and said well if you bodge it it won't matter then will it, or you can park somewhere else.

I did stop using him!

latetothefisting · 26/08/2025 14:50

like people who jump on the nearest treadmill/bike/etc to you in the gym when there's loads spare. Why???

Fountofwisdom · 26/08/2025 14:52

cheesycheesy · 26/08/2025 13:59

Maybe it’s a sheep mentality. People just follow where the other cars are and don’t pay attention to the dozens of free bays.

I honestly think it is something like this! Happens all the time and always irritates me. In fact, it happened this morning at a huge Sainsbury’s. It was very quiet and I parked in the furthest, emptiest section of car park, as I always do. Literally dozens of empty spaces in every direction. Came out with my trolley 15 mins later and a car is parked right next to me, despite a choice of about 50 other spaces with no neighbouring cars. It’s so weird.

JTBB33 · 26/08/2025 19:09

And like when people sit on the table next to you in an empty pub 🙄

Fmlgirl · 26/08/2025 19:22

Yea the gym equivalent is getting on the treadmill next to you when there’s a whole row of empty ones. I’ve never understood this.

pinkpanther84 · 26/08/2025 19:28

I just don’t get it! If it’s a quiet carpark I park away from everyone else. I leave myself as much room as possible to get out, no risk of dinging my door on another car. To then find someone parks right next to me. I don’t understand people!

I hate this! I pulled into a car park with a flat tyre and parked right at the far end to change it. Convoluted story but there was something wrong with the wheel and I couldn’t get the nuts undone and ended up calling breakdown. I was sitting in the car with door ajar slightly waiting for the recovery van when a man beeped his horn for me to close the door so he could park next to me. We were in a sea of 20-30 empty spaces. I told him that he probably didn’t want to park there as the wheel that needed attention was drivers front and we were both nose in. He was quite miffed and huffed a whole space over. I was right though because the breakdown man’s solution was hitting the wheel with a sledgehammer!

This is wild. Why are people so bloody weird?!

No a mini. It’s irrelevant anyway. Other peoples inability to park in a straight line without having to park next to someone else shouldn’t be my problem.

And your desire to have no one use the vacant spaces near you is presumably not their problem

Allofthelightss · 26/08/2025 20:06

You are 100% not unreasonable. Especially somewhere like a leisure centre where kids fling their car doors open with reckless abandon. Once I was waiting in the car to take a call and this happened to me - door hit mine so hard it rocked the car. Kid slams it shut & parent pays it no mind. Off they trot. Left a huge dent down to metal. The amount of door dinks on my car guts me, I always try to park far away from others or use the unsaid rule of leaving every other space free. It’s not about being precious, it’s about using common sense & being courteous. Why not give yourself & others the extra room to get in & out. Don’t get me started to those who park over the bay lines! 🤣

LlynTegid · 26/08/2025 20:10

I can understand if it is to have the car in shade, not otherwise.

Car parks are not designed for the number of SUVs there are, or indeed other wide cars, 99% of which are unnecessary.

SunnySlopes · 26/08/2025 20:15

This made me laugh - this always happens to dh and me.

We have 2 young dcs, one in a booster seat, 1 still in baby/toddler seat. We purposely find a spot further away with lots of empty spots as figure there’s less chance of someone parking right next to us & it’s obviously easier to get dcs in and out….9/10 times, we come back and there’s usually a great big bastard car next to us, shit parking, leaving no space whatsoever (even though there’s tonnes of empty spots elsewhere) 😵‍💫

Cut to the chase and park where everyone else does instead of starting a new 'preferred' parking area. You're going to have company either way and it will irritate you less when you've chosen your parking bay companions yourself.

That's a good way of looking at it. Hadn't thought of it like that before.

AbzMoz · 26/08/2025 22:08

This happened on Saturday morning at Tesco! We went v early and parked in a through bay (like drove through so don’t have to reverse out). There was SO many empty spaces when we parked and when we returned to the car.

Why oh why then did someone park IMMEDIATELY behind our car - like up to the bumper, involving doing gymnastics to fill our boot. Madness!!

MermaidMummy06 · 26/08/2025 22:15

I have a small SUV style car. Every time I come out, regardless of where I park or how empty the car park is, I have a monster truck either side of me. At least one will have a protruding tow ball. It's almost impossible to get out as I have to reverse straight back until I'm out, and then there's not enough room to turn.

Tollington · 26/08/2025 22:38

I’ve noticed recently that when I drive in to a supermarket car park if there’s a car coming in behind me they nearly always just follow me around the car park instead of making their own decisions on where to go. I then want to reverse in to a space and I’ve got them in my way. Fuck off!

if you don’t want people parking near you, park in spaces furthers to the entrance of place intended. otherwise you can’t expect people to pick the furthest parking while you park close.

I have a two door car ( old and not posh) The doors are big and I need space to swing them open to get out . I always park away from other cars so I don’t have to squeeze out as I also have a dodgy knee . I invariably come out to someone parked right next to me when there are lots of other spaces available. I think cars have some sort of homing instinct 😂

Your inability to get out of a space with a car next to you shouldn't be their problem.

To be fair if they are in the space correctly then it isn't your problem, you just choose to make it that.

It’s just being an inconsiderate twat when you block someone in from opening their doors when there’s plenty of other convenient spaces to get into that aren’t blocking anyone else in.

Second day of car ownership, first motorway drive, I stopped at services and parked miles from anyone deliberately. Came back to find someone parked right next to me. Bad decision on their part. I made a complete mess of reversing out and had to leave an apologetic note on their windscreen.

Now that I am better at driving and parking, I never park near a lone car, just in case it’s me from thirty years ago.

What did you do that required a note? Did you scrape their car? 😂

FenderStrat · 27/08/2025 07:11

Are you saying they parked so close you were physically unable to get into your car and had to wait until the driver came back?

bumbaloo · 27/08/2025 07:13

Amonthinthecountry · 26/08/2025 13:52

Do you have a very large car? Don’t know about anyone else but my sympathy levels are directly correlated with the size of your vehicle.

Weird comment. It’s not relating to the post at all. Regardless of vehicle size it is weird to park against another car if you don’t have to
