Would you let Dh crack on or would you help?

On a 3 day break to recover from a hectic weekend of Ds wedding. Beautiful location, perfect weather plenty of healthy takeaways conveniently located so taking advantage of not having to cook and clean up. Dh insists on plating takeaways rather than just eating out of containers. I’m happy to eat out of containers so aibu to let him clean up. Because that is what I’m doing but wondering would others help. Btw just us with Dd and her Dh and 2 toddles.

Of course it should be plated.

Ivenoname · 26/08/2025 05:04

Deliberately not helping seems an act of real unpleasantness in what should be a happy family time together.

Hufflemuff · 26/08/2025 05:04

What a dull AIBU

Rafting2022 · 26/08/2025 05:07

How difficult is it to wash 6 plates afterwards?

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2025 05:19

Depends. Curry or Chinese food, plate and help. Kebab or burger, don’t bother.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 26/08/2025 05:46

Just help regardless. Did you have a heated discussion about using / not using plates?

BCBird · 26/08/2025 05:47

It would be more civilised with plates. As there are 4 adults surely you can rotate with clearing up. I'd not want takeaways all the time to be honest.

Pringleinjury · 26/08/2025 05:49

For the sake of a few plates who really cares? I would happily eat out of a container but if my DH put mine on a plate I wouldn’t refuse to wash the plates up. It would only take a minute.

SouthLondonMum22 · 26/08/2025 05:51

If he is insisting on plates, he can clean them up. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Sushi for lunch presented in nice cardboard containers.
Guess I’m just eager to get to afternoon siesta without worrying about cleaning up

Life is too short. Let him stand on his head and eat it with his toes if that’s what brings him happiness.
Pick your battles, this isn’t it.

Why should Op if none of it is her mess?! I’m sure the others have hands to use.

Cinaferna · 26/08/2025 06:25

I'd never plate sushi. It could fall apart.

I'd plate curry.

MyLimeGuide · 26/08/2025 06:26

Why cant you eat out of the box and he can eat off a plate??

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 26/08/2025 06:34

Seriously how much cleaning up is there to do before your siesta? This sounds really petty.

I wouldn’t usually but there is a great range of healthy options and easier with toddlers

I’m not arguing and I’m letting him do his thing. He actually prefers to also stack the dishwasher a certain way so I think I’ll concede I’m probably being petty but will let him get on with it.

I agree you are being petty.

This is one of the pretty rare occasions on MN where my sympathy lies with the H.

clotheslinefiasco · 26/08/2025 06:49

I'll just say this:

Meh

InterestedDad37 · 26/08/2025 06:54

Tell him it's time to apply 'out of the box' thinking, and eat 'out of the box' rather than 'outside the box'.🍛
(but making him clear up on principle is a bit mean)

AlaKart · 26/08/2025 07:10

Plates with adults, perhaps not use 'best' china.
Individual place mats would also be acceptable rather than table cloth.

Bjorkdidit · 26/08/2025 07:17

YABU for repeatedly going on about how healthy your takeaways were. Nobody cares.

But you also mention a dishwasher. So I don't understand how putting a few plates and cutlery in a dishwasher and removing them afterwards would take so long it disrupted your afternoon siesta. It could have been done in less time than it took to post this thread.

woolshop · 26/08/2025 07:19

Thanks all. I do try to avoid house work where possible so will concede I am being unreasonable
