House viewings - neighbour refuses to take down flag

1000 replies

KayleighhMum · 25/08/2025 15:53

Our house is up for sale and we have viewings commencing from tomorrow - 7 in total lined up over the course of the week.

Our neighbour hung a large England flag from his top window on Friday and it has remained up. DH saw him outside the front on Saturday and politely asked if he could take it down before Tuesday. He basically laughed and said if any prospective new neighbour dislikes the flag then they won’t be the sort of person he’d want living next to him. It remains up now.

I am concerned this would be off putting, but speaking to my mum earlier she thinks I am over thinking things and it wouldn’t make a difference if someone likes the house.

Do you think we should try and ask again or would you assume it shouldn’t put people off? We are semi detached so it will definitely be noticed.

No prior issues with this neighbour who has always been friendly etc.

it’s a good advert for buyers about the sort of neighbour they can expect - given the comments on here sounds pretty balanced around who’d like it vs who’d avoid…
good luck with your own move!

The sort of guy who supports women's sport.

You are right. This is a good advert for the sort of neighbours tou can expect - for those with the flag not those buying.

It would massively put me off, especially given what's going on at the moment. I would assume they're a racist, Reform-voting family and we wouldn't get on.

However, you can't make him. It's just rubbish timing. I suppose it wouldn't put everyone off.

How utterly ridiculous . What gives you the right to assume someone is racist or their political leaning for flying there own country's flag ?

SanityLeftTheChat · 26/08/2025 22:32

Tsama · 26/08/2025 22:29

No, but flying the flag at the same time right wing racists says so sends a clear message

You mean like how you and others have been judging OP? So right back at you

Also since we're talking about Jesus, to quote the Bible:

Leviticus 19:33-34
When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. Treat them as your native-born citizen, and love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God

If you're against immigrants you're against God words + don't love your fellow men as Jesus told you to :v

Edited

I'm just pointing out that you are being hypocritical not claiming anything to do with Jesus myself. You do realise though that most of these immigrants are completely against Jesus and your religion.

Timing

Fly your flag at the same time racists tell people to do it, then people will just take logical conclusions

Nothing ridiculous

We're all hypocrites

And now you're assuming all immigrants are against Jesus and my religion, very ungodly of you :v

No you are. You quote Jesus saying he would be disappointed but then do exactly what he says not to do. I'm not quoting Jesus, neither is anyone else apart from you.

Have you been at the communion wine?

During a major sporting women's World Cup . . . . .

It's supposed to be the right wing and racists who can't figure things out. They are manipulating what is already happening for their own agenda, and you are helping them by making it about them.

Or is that in purpose. Timing, help racists get attention and tale it away from women's sport when they ask for help. Maybe we should take logical conclusions.

We're all hypocrites one way or another

Never claimed I don't disappoint Jesus, but at least I don't defend racism

Asking about personal info to a complete stranger? That's creepy and weird

Have you been drinking? Really personal information that isn't it. I think it might be past your bedtime.

Of course it's on purpose, right wing racists are using women's world cup as a shield to hide what they're really doing

But it's clear when a racist is doing it since a lot of people just don't go around flying their flags

People notice when someone who never flies the flag decades to do it now

So no, it's not women Worlds Cup

Bongo45 · 26/08/2025 22:42

I don't think what you are seeing today is extreme far right, just fed up British people taking a stand. I would not let a flag flying now put me off buying a house. Anyone thinking all these people are suddenly BNP are delusional.

There's nothing racist about being patriotic. Other countries fly their flags all the time.

Well said but unfortunately the left won't accept this. Although perhaps when their leafy suburbs are overtaken by Serco owned HMO's their views may change.

naffusername · 26/08/2025 22:44

I hope you aren't emigrating. On my street here in Canada, we have four Maple Leaf flags, six provincial and one Lebanese flying.

It's even worse if you cross the 49th. Wall to wall stars and stripes in some areas.

StripyShirt · 26/08/2025 22:49

Dawnb19 · 26/08/2025 21:12

I don't understand why anyone would find it off-putting. Why should English people not put up their flag? Are they embarrassed of their country? I live in Northern Ireland and we have flags everywhere. 🤷 I've also lived in America and Australia and people put their flags up as well.

Hanging flags from bedroom windows is rather common or chavvy. It doesn't matter what the flag actually is, and it would also be fine if on an actual flag pole.

MrsKateColumbo · 26/08/2025 22:50

My parents' back neighbour has had a massive flag pole (and flag) in his back garden for 30 years.

Never heard a peep from him and he's much less annoying than other neighbours!

Kent2024 · 26/08/2025 23:05

Apart from the fact this has got to be a joke thread, given the op’s latest update. I must just say it’s funny how the same people who sneer at an England flag cheer everyone else’s. It’s become fashionable for the middle classes to despise their own identity, which is quite sad really. I actually do feel genuinely bad for you if you feel like this. The world must be a really scary place if you see bad everywhere you look.
Ultimately it’s an England Flag in England. Hardly controversial.

Canada is built on multiculturalism. You know that even though your neighbour might be hanging the Italian flag for example, they have allegiance and respect for Canada. The Canadian who will proudly hang his flag outside won’t be doing it because of his far right sentiments, it’s because he genuinely loves his country
There is no pride in the flag here.
it is no where to be seen at schools.
Children don’t even know the national anthem.
People feel generally ashamed of hanging the flag here because it’s been stolen by the far right.

Rewis · 26/08/2025 23:23

People talking aboht other countries proudly flying their flags. Are they on a flagpole or showed out from a window? Very different vibe.

Britain is a successful multicultural society (one of the best) unless you hadn’t noticed. Our children’s school celebrates lots of special days including St George’s day where the children can dress in red and white and bring in their flags. They also celebrated the coronation with a huge party and lots of you guessed it… Union flags.

You mean to say that YOU have no pride in the flag. Stop projecting onto others.

DH is furious and is going to go round there again tomorrow so hopefully common sense will prevail.

You never know, they may get on very well what with them both being entitled morons.

Endorewitch · 26/08/2025 23:45

I don't get why you have a problem. You say it is only for kerb appeal and a prospective buyers viewpoint. If you fear the flag will put a buyer off then obviously you must be aware of the correlation between recent events in the news and the English flag. Sadly their is now a racial stigma attached and this is what you fear ,although you don't say so. I fully understand. It would put me off. But beware of asking him to remove it. He might put up another one!
