AIBU to not get hangovers on holiday but do at home?

My sister is the same and we can’t work out why.

Im early 50s and realised that at home, a couple of drinks, sometimes even just one drink, I feel hideous the next day. Whereas on holiday, couple of generous European measure gin and tonics pre dinner, half a bottle of vino with food, couple of drinks after, I’m absolutely fine the next day. It’s not like I’m sleeping better on holiday as I really don’t and seem to survive on 5 or 6 hours whereas at home I need a solid 9 to function. I’m drinking basically the same stuff - wine and gin. I don’t feel markedly less stressed on holiday tbh; a child with type 1 diabetes means I’m always ‘on’.

So, AIBU to only have hangovers at home, ie is it just a me thing, or AINBU, as it’s a common phenomenon? And if the latter, why?! What am I missing??

You’re drinking more water because it’s hot and therefore the booze isn’t dehydrating you in the same way??

CalzoneOnLegs · 24/08/2025 16:37

It’s possibly better quality wine, and as a PP said more water being consumed

Mmmm decent hypothesis. However I don’t think so. I drink gallons of tea / water at home (whilst working - good avoidance technique) and generally cba on hols so don’t think it’s that?

Never thought about crap wine being the culprit- good point…

i always find that even if I have had too much to drink on holiday, as soon as I’ve been in the water for a swim I feel absolutely fine!

Jumping in the sea / pool cures most things doesn’t it!

Yes we find the same thing!

For me, it is because on holiday I am eating more/eating regularly plus drinking in a more ‘relaxed’ way.
for example a pre dinner glass of wine (not daily) will likely be drunk whilst I am cooking, tidying, prepping packed lunch etc after a day of household stuff and/or a long NHS shift…

My family is the same. My theory is that you sweat it out! Combined with drinking more water

Sunshine. Vitamin d. Im
the same. Also with little sleep. Always exhausted when get home though!

You’re also motivated to get up, find a sun lounger and enjoy the day. Whereas at home, bed is more appealing than work, so you end up wanting to wallow!
