My little girls birthday is coming up, she'll be 9. I have got her some presents, what she's asked for but nothing big so I've made and printed some vouchers for things I can book/pay for at later date that I know she wants to do as I'm just a bit short atm due to unforseen circs.

Am I being unreasonable to do this or is it a good idea? Would anyone else do this?

You're absolutely not BU

My daughter's birthday is nine days after Christmas. We often struggle to find presents for her birthday after we've got Christmas sorted.

We get her a few presents and make some arrangements for things for her to look forward to later in the year (when the weather will be better), such as a theme park visit, a zoo visit or a theatre visit.

Definitely reasonable xx

It’s a great idea. As long as she has some bits to open, the voucher tactic sounds really sensible. I’m sure she’ll love a day out in October or whenever.

Peabody25 · 23/08/2025 16:07

No we’ve always done that! DS’s birthday is September, just after the school summer hols, and we have a busy October with family birthday’s, so both birthday and Christmas always involves some vouchers for things like trip to the theatre, a book or game that’s due out at a later date, an afternoon tea or similar.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 23/08/2025 16:10

I would only do this if you’re 100% confident you can fulfill them in the near future.

BreadInCaptivity · 23/08/2025 16:16

I think it’s a good idea and actually extends the birthday experience in that she has some nice things to look forward to.

My parents used to do this - birthday tokens- not funds related but because I’m a near Xmas birthday person 😊 and otherwise I’d get lots of things in December and then have to wait a year. Also it was nice to be able to have some “tokens” to use over the summer holidays for things that wouldn’t be appropriate in the winter.

I really liked it and definitely didn’t feel short changed in any way.

FedUp120028 · 23/08/2025 22:24

Thanks guys!

The vouchers include a concert, a theatre show and a trip to Disneyland and will definitely be fulfilled 😁

Plenty to open, balloons cake etc and we are going to London as the disney store has a free princess makeover, she also wants to go on the london eye and we have merlin passes. She has some birthday money from relatives to spend whilst there too 😁

Sounds fantastic. She’s a lucky girl 😊

Thank you!

Update -
The day out she was having Wednesday didn't happen (I came down unwell and the weather was temperamental) so we're going there before she goes back to school, hopefully some dry weather ahead.

First 'voucher' is being fulfilled Thursday next week! Which is a theatre show!

Second is a short break just me and her, now booked for end of September.

1 last voucher to sort - concert tickets!
