To think most famous actors are not good people?

Am I being unreasonable to think that most famous actors (men in particular) are not good people, given the constant stream of stories about them being exposed as sexual harassers, bullies, or otherwise awful. Does the fame inevitably go to their heads? I wonder if anyone knows of any famous actors who are genuinely lovely in real life?

Some, definitely. Most, I doubt it.

As with any industry there's a certain type of person that can be drawn to it for nefarious purposes, and those are the ones we tend to hear about the most.

I have met several famous actors in the 90s and most were lovely, I grew up knowing someone who is now very famous and he was always an arsehole, and hasn't changed much.

IcedPurple · 23/08/2025 14:43

Obviously I don't know him in 'real life', but Cillian Murphy seems OK.

His fellow Irish man Pierce Brosnan too. Never heard anything bad about him despite him being famous for decades.

David Tennant annoys me but he doesn't seem like an awful person. I'm sure there are plenty of others.

I guess when you are famous and more than likely physically attractive too, you can indulge yourself a bit more than your average guy working in an office or Amazon warehouse. Maybe most of us would not be very 'nice' if we had all sorts of temptations thrown our way and had people pandering to us all the time.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/08/2025 14:44

There are a lot of actors out there, it’s stupid to assume most are bad people based on the actions of a few. It’s just like men in any other job (and women), some are bad, others are not.

CoffeeCantata · 23/08/2025 14:47

The performing arts, especially where people become successful and famous, have a higher than average occurrence of narcissistic personalities. Actors have to establish close relationships with their fellow performers quickly and these are necessarily going to be pretty superficial. They will work with a group of people for a relatively short time and then move on - possibly abandoning those relationships. It’s in the nature of the work. And it’s a world in which you need to hustle and promote yourself - no one else is going to, and one where jealousy is going to b3 a common emotion.

Hence the luvvie cliche and calling each other darling because you can’t remember all the names!

Arlanymor · 23/08/2025 14:48

Like with anything in life - and any profession - there are always some bad eggs but they are vastly in the minority. You are just far more likely to hear about actors behaving badly because they are in the public eye. There was a thread not so long ago about good and bad experiences with people meeting celebrities - and some people had different experiences from meeting the same person, so just goes to show, people - including famous ones - can have off days. And ultimately you'd have to know someone relatively well to know if they were indeed a bad 'un, not purely through a brief handful of encounters.

I hadn't thought about it like that, it makes a lot of sense.

Actors may well have more opportunities to use their fame and success to take advantage of other people who are dazzled by those things. But equally, the world hears all about it when a famous actor behaves badly. It doesn’t tend to hear about non-famous accountants, librarians, and podiatrists when they behave badly - so there’s not exactly a great way to compare.

I knew CM at university, and more recently my son used to go to school with his brother's kids, so I'd run into him the odd time when there were sleepovers etc -- he's always seemed a perfectly pleasant type. (And much less pretty in the flesh than on screen.

CoffeeCantata · 23/08/2025 14:49

I think David Tennant is a very judgemental person from his Who do you think you are? episode. Great actor though!

I agree that he seems a bit judgey and annoying, but not a 'bad' person as such.

Have to say I've never rated him as an actor at all.

I liked him on doctor who! But I was about 10 at the time so probably wasn't the most discerning...

Interesting. I guess his kind of elfin, sexually ambivalent looks can be enchanting on screen, but a bit weird in real life!

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2025 14:55

Plenty of non actors are bullies and sexual harassers. I’ve certainly met my fair share of such people. I think we just hear about actors who behave badly because they’re famous and there is money to be made from reporting it.

chunkybear · 23/08/2025 14:57

I suspect there’s a higher proportion who are entitled and/or abusive / horrible etc. because they tend to put themselves in a pedestal, as do their fans … kind of comes with the territory, but I think plenty are average, we can all be arsey at times

He went drastically down hill after Dr Who IMO

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 23/08/2025 15:00

Some will be, some won't. Pretty much like with an other occupation

I have never heard anything to suggest people like Tom Hanks, Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs or Tom Hiddleston are bad people to work with (or in general) and I hope it remains that way.

More very thin and pale in the flesh. Though I think the last time I set eyes on him he still had the stupid Peaky Blinders haircut, which makes everyone look weird...

I don’t warm to him as a person but - dammit! I hate to say it but I do think he’s good. Have you ever seen him play Dennis Neilson (serial killer)? Absolutely chilling and too close for comfort…

Yeah, I've seen a few candid photos of him out and about and he did look just very small, pale and slightly built. Probably wouldn't get a glance from women, although the same is true for many 'hot' actors in 'real life'. I guess it's the charisma he brings to his roles which makes him attractive.

Not seen that one but I've never found him really convincing in anything I've seen him in. Not terrible, just overrated.

Whichone2024 · 23/08/2025 15:06

Never seen a bad word about keanu reeves but I know someone who met a lot of celebrities in her job and said Pearce Brosnan was the loveliest she ever met.
I do remember her also saying Sean Connery was not nice - and I did watch an interview where he said it’s perfectly reasonable to slap a woman to shut her up!! 😡

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 23/08/2025 15:07

The two men I know who are surveyors are both total cunts.

Bit of a leap to apply that to all surveyors, however.
