Sorry to use US currency. Pounds didn’t feel like the right expression.

I’m early forties with two young kids and fighting the constraints of aging and budget and time. Can you recommend anything you have done to make you look and/or feel great?

I recently had my eyebrows tinted and waxed for the first time. No one seemed to notice but I really liked seeing them in the mirror, made me feel very good!

I keep seeing glow potions on Instagram (something you use instead of foundation and makes you look dewy and tanned). By Charlotte Tilsbury or Beauty Pie or Trinny London. Do they work?

Tips please! Could be products or procedures (I’m not so interested in full on surgery) or activities… what has made you look better?

Benefit Porefessional. It blurs wrinkles instantly and gives me a real lift.
RetiNAl (not Retinol)
Geek & Gorgeous Peptides.

Use an SPF every single day. Moisturise the shit out of your face every night before bed, nothing fancy, aveeno would be great. Moisture is moisture. Always make sure your hair is "styled" as much as possible, well not even styled, just try to stay away from the mam bun. I've found having shorter hair forces me to keep it clean and nice every day. I think as long as your hair is good to go you don't have to worry too much about make up. Try to avoid leggings and hoodie every day. Sometimes it's not just your face it's everything. I have 2 young DC and was wearing leggings every day. Since I bought wide leg trousers I will never ever put leggings on my body.
Use a tinted moisturiser for makeup for that glowy dew you're searching for. Drink lots and lots of water.

Just as an example, its embarrassing, but I completely neglected my hair during pregnancy and having LOs. I got it cut and shaped last week and its been life changing. I feel amazing every day regardless of everything else!

@dontcomeatme
oh you look amazing!!

Thank you! I haven't even wore make up since having it done, I feel happy and confident as is. I've been trying to make small changes to my appearance this year and I'm really feeling the difference x

Posture. Standing straight and not slouching makes such a difference to how you look, (even when wearing a hoodie ang leggings!!) and therefore makes you feel better too. Positivity inside radiates to the outside.

Exercise, regularly, with strength training. Body looks far better than non-exercised body (in my opinion) as any fat/skin sits on top of defined musculature rather than just 'being'.
Also, and rather sadly, don't give in to the slow but steady increase in weight. Keep a close eye on it and have a few lighter diet days if weight is up. I do this at the 3lb increase mark and it does work, as it's so much easier to do it then, as opposed to the 7lb mark or over.

Limit or drink very little alcohol.
Loads of water every day.
Magnesium if you don’t sleep well.
SPF 50 even in winter and especially in summer.
Loads of fruit and veg.

Dont cake makeup on or block pores, keep it light.

Use aveeno on face at night, I used my kids one 🤣

IlovePhilMitchell · 23/08/2025 09:28

Oooh apply face scrub twice a week.

These give me glowy skin. I also use Garnier green bottle serum daily along with Nivea blue tin, I get a lot of compliments on my skin.

Agree with hair and skin and eyebrows.

My hair is naturally pretty striking anyway (naturally red, big curls) and doesn't take much looking after but my money goes to: a top-notch dermatologist for skincare, excellent dermatological facials and also getting my eyebrows threaded every month.

I don't do gel nails or fake tan or indeed anything else at a salon, though lots of friends swear by the happiness boost they get from freshly done nails, so you may wish to explore.

Perfume every day also helps me feel fabulous, as does wearing natural fabrics (cashmere, wool, silk) in flattering colours. And having an excellent seamstress to get things tweaked just so.

Saponarium · 23/08/2025 09:45

Morning facial massage makes me feel great. There are lots of 5 or 10 min vids on YouTube.

BuckChuckets · 23/08/2025 10:12

8+ hours of sleep, lots of water, sticking to a skincare routine (specifically for aging skin), regular facials, and botox.

hangerup · 23/08/2025 10:12

Working p/t as less stress

hangerup · 23/08/2025 10:14

my dc are in school though.

I gave up alcohol as it was impacting my sleep but was never a big drinker.

Radiowaawaa · 23/08/2025 10:16

A walk or a dip in the river first thing makes me feel amazing even if it’s just 30 minutes.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/08/2025 10:46

I've had laser treatment for thread veins and rosacea, which has evened out my skin tone considerably! I'm also having laser hair removal on my legs, so that I don't have to worry about having missed bits if I'm wearing a skirt (I have alarmingly pale skin and very dark hair).

Try to dress in smart/casual mode when you're out and about. People tend to treat you a lot better when you're nicely dressed, and I also feel neat and tidy. Bonus points for trench coats (especially tweedy ones) in autumn/winter, as they look lovely and mine get admiring glances!

Other than that, moisturise your skin, wear scent, try to give up anything that creates extra stress, do what makes you happy with your appearance (e.g. some people like BIAB nails and fake tan and things), sleep as much as you need to, try to maintain a healthy diet (though a bit of chocolate won't kill you), have good posture, exercise and learn everything that you're interested in, as that will give you a confidence boost, as well as extra things to talk about.

Amazing suggestions here thank you all so much.Im going to get a pen and paper and make a list from all the posts.

I think losing weight would be the greatest step I could take to liking the way I look more. I’m going to start calorie counting. After the bank holiday…
