Genuinely, was I being unreasonable…

Flew home from abroad last night. Had bought my daughter a ticket but she needed to leave early. I decided to keep the ticket rather than sell on so I could have two seats: sleep etc. it was a late night flight and I had a three hour car commute thereafter.

just as plane was about to disembark , a man sat down beside me. I explained that he had the wrong seat . He simply said it was his in a rude tone.

The flight attendant saw this and hurried over to tell me that this man was’ actually a pilot’ and needed the seat. She further explained that he was off duty but a pilot nonetheless and again she was taking the seat.

she saw from my face that I was not happy and apologised as I explained , again, to both, that I intentionally held onto the seat knowing my daughter would t be travelling.
The man sighed/ tutted and was generally rude through the flight if I needed to go to the bathroom and in the end, he just got up and walked off the flight when we landed without even a thank you .
Am I being unreasonable to be very pissed off here???
I feel like emailing the airline and asking for a ticket refund.
I think that if he had been mannerly and pleasant, I wouldnt be so cross but the entitlement and obnoxious manner got my back up .

I think it's morally wrong to oversell seats and airlines shouldn't be allowed to do it. Even if a passenger is a no show, the seat has been sold and unless they refund the passenger before the flight, it isn't their seat to fill!
I agree with the OP that morally that seat was hers/her DD's and the airline ought to have paid her for it before assuming it's theirs to re allocate.
Just because airlines routinely behave badly, that doesn't make the OP wrong!

They didn't oversell the flight. They put a member of staff in the seat. He would have been on stand by and once the flight was closed, they would have allocated any untaken seats to stand by passengers, which includes non paying staff.

My husband used to work for an airline and we got to fly stand by for free. But you had to wait til the flight closed to see if there were free seats. Usually they were in business or first class as economy seats normally sell out and the passengers turn up. Then they allocate them to paying stand by passengers and to staff.

And if you needed to get to a destination in an emergency and all the flights were full, you would be glad to get a stand by seat from someone who hadn't turned up.

Where is 'Celt'?

I asked the same question, but the OP called me an asshole.

XWKD · 23/08/2025 20:37

Your daughter didn't fly. The seat was free.

We were travelling back from Brisbane via Singapore with BA. All fine. Get on the flight back to Heathrow, we’d booked front seats as my husband and son are 6ft 4. Thought it would be great for extra leg room. Was the sh*iest plane ever, narrow seats the table things took up so much room as they came up from the arm rests and then the crowning glory, after takeoff they moved someone to the jump seat meant for cabin crew during takeoff and landing. For the whole sodding 14 hour flight…you got lucky op!

How did this affect you? And who were they, just a random passenger?

We couldn’t stretch out as expected as the person was right in front of us and had to put their legs somewhere. It was so uncomfortable all round. You didn’t really know where to look. (I don’t sleep on planes).

Kinglynn · 23/08/2025 21:41

Complain to the airline and ask for a refund

Coconutter24 · 22/08/2025 12:48

On a train is different. If I bought 2 tickets and reserved 2 seats then I will be having two seats. Unless the train was really full then I’d offer it to anyone who had to stand

Two tickets reserves a seat each for two people. Not bags or air. You would be wrong, and anyone can sit in that seat still - as soon as th train leaves the station the seat was booked for, only one person has turned up for the two seats so one is now free.

I see. Yeah that's v annoying especially as you'd no doubt paid for extra leg room. I don't sleep on planes either and I'm always so jealous of those people who can literally shut their eyes & they're asleep, even on a daytime flight! If I had a super power it would be to be able to sleep anytime, anywhere!

It's not obvious at all! The only 'Celt' I'm familiar with is Celtic people ... ie from Wales.

Which makes no sense in context. Look at the context, “bought an airline ticket but couldn’t use it.” Clearly.

This is true, as I learned yesterday

TeaAndTattoos · 23/08/2025 22:56

YABU that seat was no longer yours I have never flown in my life and even I know that they overbooked a flight and keep people on standby because they know that not every person is going to show up so any empty seats go to anyone on the list. They knew that seat next to you hadn’t been taken because your daughter never checked in so that was seat was free to be used by anyone else. All this is probably explained in the T&C’s.

Ratafia · 24/08/2025 08:44

Try asking for a refund anyway, as it was their pilot who used the seat.

bfc1980 · 24/08/2025 08:51

The level of entitlement here is off the charts.

' .... to Celt: WHERE IS CELT FFS?

Once again, it’s a typo for ticket.

Pawparazzi · 24/08/2025 09:11

How do you know this? The OP is completely silent even though she's been asked many times. As a typo for ticket, it doesn't make any sense. However, if she meant: ' ... to sell it ...' then perhaps it might make sense.
I despair of the poor level of literacy of some people.

KilkennyCats · 24/08/2025 09:17

Chemenger · 24/08/2025 08:59

It couldn’t possibly be a typo for ticket.

Chemenger · 24/08/2025 09:21

KilkennyCats · 24/08/2025 09:17

It couldn’t possibly be a typo for ticket.

So the title can’t possibly read “Bought airline seat ticket…”. Because what she bought was a ticket she thought entitled her to a seat on an airline. Probably an auto correct of “tocket”, a typo for ticket.

ConnieHeart · 24/08/2025 10:16

BeltaLodaLife · 23/08/2025 22:20

So why the extra "to Celt" then?

Chemenger · 24/08/2025 13:19

ConnieHeart · 24/08/2025 10:16

So why the extra "to Celt" then?

“To Celt” is a typo for “ticket” as previously explained. Probably the OP typed “tocket” (i and o being adjacent on the keyboard) then her device “helpfully “ autocorrected to to Celt, like my phone would, it selected the least likely words it could find.

dh280125 · 25/08/2025 14:03

Only seats that are occupied are yours. It's in every airline T&C ever. You cannot book two seats in different names and hold onto them both if the other person doesn't fly. Sorry you got caught out but you will know next time.

TaupeLemur · 25/08/2025 14:05

agieselbow · 22/08/2025 12:07

Even if I paid for it, it is assumed not to be mine? Surely this can’t be right ?
so regardless of how many seats a person buys, even if not in their name, the airline is entitled to take them? Wouldnt overbooking be their issue to sort rather than take prepaid seats that were not filled?

If you don’t check in then the seat can be given to anyone. People
miss flights all the time and flights are overbooked for that reason so they can give your seat to anyone if it’s unused.

TaupeLemur · 25/08/2025 14:07

It’s why ‘larger’ people can’t just buy 2 seats … no guarantee they’ll get the second seat once they board.

YarrowYarrow · 25/08/2025 14:31

TaupeLemur · 25/08/2025 14:07

It’s why ‘larger’ people can’t just buy 2 seats … no guarantee they’ll get the second seat once they board.

They can absolutely buy two seats, but they need to do whatever extra thing to airline requires to make it clear why they're buying two so that they won't be reallocated and will be adjacent. I think different airlines vary in how they approach this. It is doable, but not just by buying two seats in your name.
