Labelling uniform for high school - quick poll on how to do it

DC is off to Big School in September and I've just spent a small fortune kitting him out. It all needs labelling. DH insists that the name labels that have seen us all the way through primary school will cause social death at high school, and we should just biro his name into everything.

YABU - DH is right and we risk DC becoming a laughing stock if he's spotted with a name label

YANBU - we should get the labels and have done with it

I use Stickins stick on labels. In primary I put Line 1: kids name, line 2: my phone number. I secondary I just did the kids name and no phone number. No complaints from my kids re bullying.

Yes we did the phone number thing too. I never once had a call or message when anything went missing, but one of the DCs surprised me by reciting my phone number the other day. He said it was because he reads it on his pencil case every day during lessons Grin

Cash’s name tapes

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/08/2025 22:01

Sharpie

OneFootAfterTheOther · 21/08/2025 22:04

Sew in labels here. Both DC survived.

bluesky9 · 21/08/2025 22:06

Sharpie, but Mr Bystander DH should do it

Magicmagician · 21/08/2025 22:06

We use stik-ins here too (going into year 8), they last really well. You can peel them off if you really try hard but they don’t come off on their own or fade, and as pp said they’re plain, just first name, second name. So much easier than sewing and easier to read (my writing anyway!) than a sharpie

Aspidistree · 21/08/2025 22:07

Sharpie wears off, I can't be doing with the admin.

Cash's or stickins here but I did stop labelling socks (probably should never have started, but I was a boarder and some habits are hard to break)

mamagogo1 · 21/08/2025 22:09

I sewed them in, (I also cut them cut to reuse) same set are now sewn into military uniform!

Gemstonebeach · 21/08/2025 22:10

Sticker name labels. Why would the other kids care at all?

More adult looking stick on labels. I have no patience for anything else.

That was my thought too but according to DH I'll be condemning DC to be singled out as a social pariah. Presumably a bit like the scene in Home Alone where Kevin explains "a boy he knew got lynched because there was a rumour he wore dinosaur pyjamas"Hmm

I bought Cash’s labels for each of my children when they started nursery school. The bag lasted right until they left school for Uni, in fact still have a few left which are in their memory boxes. If the bag had run out I don’t think I would’ve resorted to the sharpie on label as the culture in their schools is the Cash’s labels lol.

Aspidistree · 21/08/2025 22:19

I think the things kids pick on these days are often different to the things kids picked on a generation ago.

No one brings cash so there is no lunch money to steal. Children can even eat hummus sandwiches without censure. My kids have never cared what brand of trainers they wear for PE.

Panola · 21/08/2025 22:24

I used a laundry marker pen right through school from reception. Worked well. Pilot Laundry Tec Fabric Marker

PollyBell · 21/08/2025 22:33

I just put initials with a laundry pen, if my child didnt want name labels I cant see a reason to overide that i would have hated my parenrs doing that to me

3pears · 21/08/2025 22:40

I use biro because I’m lazy but I really don’t think kids care how other kids label their clothes so don’t worry and just do whatever’s easiest

Totally agreed, but DC couldn't give two hoots about it, it's DH that's worried!

Haven't RTFT, but I got a stamp and I've never looked back! So much easier. Do a Google for Stamptastic.

LivingWithANob · 21/08/2025 22:49

Bic pen stands up to washing numerous times.

however, major cringe if someone clocks their mummys written their name in anything. I dont do this for my high schooler. By that age they should be able to look after their own stuff

schoolsoutforever · 21/08/2025 22:55

I've never any secondary item (because I'm lazy) with sown label or sharpie and nothing has been lost. I wouldn't recommend it but wouldn't overthink it either. Sharpie seems a sensible middle ground.

schoolsoutforever · 21/08/2025 22:56

*never labelled
