This isn't lactose free - is it?

Mousse on sale in Lidl.

Clearly marked as "lactose free".

Ingredients (marked up as hard to find the English version on the pot!) clearly show things like skimmed milk, milk protein and whipping cream....

Am I missing something?!

Usually lactose free has added lactase to neutralise the lactose. Could be the case.

Vaxtable · 20/08/2025 19:15

Well seeing how lactose is one of the ingredients I would say it’s not and complain to Lidl

Bergamotte · 20/08/2025 19:15

Yes, now that the picture has loaded, you can see the second to last ingredient is lactase. Presumably they use enough to digest the lactose in the ingredients so there isn't any in the final product.

(I'm not sure I would trust it to give to someone lactose intolerant, though!)

TheLemonOtter · 20/08/2025 19:18

If you are fine with lactose free milk and yoghurt that will be fine too, its the same process. Lactose free isn't the same as milk free!

It is an unclear font but if you zoom in, I think that says "lactase" (the enzyme which breaks down lactose). When lactose is an ingredient they usually print it in bold.

ScaryM0nster · 20/08/2025 19:22

What do you think lactose free cheese is made from?

JurassicPark4Eva · 20/08/2025 19:22

You're right, it has lactase in it - how does someone assess whether it's now sufficiently neutralised to be declared "lactose free"?

My mate takes tablets - which must be lactase ones - and eats a meal with proper cheese from time to time, but it doesn't seem to be consistently effective for him.

I'm really not aware of the science here, sorry if it's all bone questions!

Not the faintest idea. Would have assumed it's some sort of vegan option made from fermented tofu or some such.

There are standards for this. Off the top of my head I think it has to contain less than 0.1%.

Ablondiebutagoody · 20/08/2025 19:26

I have allergies. Buy something else. It's not worth the trouble.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 20/08/2025 19:26

DH is lactose intolerant and has never had an issue with Lidl lactose free items.

dementedpixie · 20/08/2025 19:26

What does it say on the pot regarding the two ** that is beside lactose?
Lactose free milk, cheese, yoghurt will have lactase added to normal animal milk in order to break down the lactose

InOverMyHead84 · 20/08/2025 19:26

This is where you have to decide whether you trust their manufacturing methods or not.

FriedFalafels · 20/08/2025 19:27

The lactase cancels out the lactose. I have it in my milk each day but didn’t realise you could take a separate tablet. I’m guessing there’s a whole bunch of science behind it in terms of quantities to neutralise

Bergamotte · 20/08/2025 19:31

I imagine for it to be explicitly marketed as lactose free, they would have to test the end product to see whether it contained any lactose.

You can imagine it is much easier to make sure the enzyme has broken down all the lactose in the mousse when you use it as part of the cooking / production process, compared to just putting some food and some tablets in your stomach at the same time.

When I said I wouldn't trust it for someone lactose intolerant, that is just because it's so counterintuitive.
(It also doesn't look like it would taste very pleasant, though! I have tried all 3 flavours of Lidl's No Added Sugar vegan protein puddings and they taste horrible from the sweeteners used. I suspect this might, too.)

They’re horrible anyway @JurassicPark4Eva.
