To think “community” doesn’t exist anymore, it’s just branding?

Everyone talks about community - online, in politics, in adverts. But where’s the substance? AIBU to think it’s just a marketing word now?

I think you may need to give some examples of exactly who ‘everyone’ is here and what yiu understand them as meaning by ‘community’.

Do you mean people living in the same area as you?

I'm a part of a few communities (e.g., mosque, running, school) but only know my immediate neighbours, no idea who else lives on my street!

Depends on context: village church attenders = community; neighbours who chat and look out for each other = community; running club which is active with lots of running and social events = community; people who attend the same conference or event every year and get to know each other = professional community. What context are you talking about?

Community is what you make it, so what are you doing to make communities around yourself OP?

GleisZwei · 20/08/2025 17:24

Folk tend to moan about lack of community when they feel they need more support, less so when they want to give support.

I think communities definitely do exist and can think of plenty of examples. They aren't a universal thing though and there are always people that won't have access to an in person community that accepts them.
