To not buy DD ballerina pumps for school?

DD is going into Y5. Apparently EVERYONE has ballerina pumps.

I’ve said no. My reasons are that I don’t want to restrict her playroom by having shoes that fly off and also they’re rubbish in the rain.

I’ve said she can have them in Y7, though I’ll still try and push for something more sensible.

But AIBU to ignore her desires to fit in fashion wise with her friends?

Entirely depends on whether you can afford to get her the pumps as well as sensible shoes. If you can, may as well get her them. If you can't, then sensible shoes obviously have to take priority.

YANBU. Those shoes are horrid

Also, don’t be so sure they will come under the uniform requirements in year 7. We don’t allow them.

Speaking as a former high school Head, I have to say that we banned those pumps as not hard-wearing enough - children have to do an awful lot of walking at secondary and in wet conditions, that sort of footwear just isn't practical.

Mind, fashions in footwear come and go...

That would be perfect if that was the case. No arguments to be had then!

Yanbu

ArghhWhatNext · 20/08/2025 08:23

I hate, hate, hate girls wearing them (work in primary setting). They can’t walk properly as the shoes don’t stay on their feet; they absolutely can’t run/play; their feet get wet in the rain and extremely wet/cold in the snow (and yes, we have had girls wear them to school in snow ).
I woks absolutely stand your ground.

As someone who has plantar facisitis due to lots of ballet pump wearing in my youth I would say hard no.

On the whole I’m a huge fan of my kids’ secondary school, but it does absolutely infuriate me that they allow ballet pumps but not boots.

What exactly is the problem with kids having warm, dry feet?

School uniform rules are so bizarre. We used to be allowed plain black pump style trainers (vans etc), but not boots. I sprained my ankle one year and was told I should wear ankle boots for support. I had to get a doctors note! It’s so bizarre because in real life this sort of thing doesn’t happen

ComfortFoodCafe · 20/08/2025 09:24

Yanbu. Those shoes need to stay in the 00s where they belong!

Was just about to say exactly this. My daughter had them for two terms and developed plantar fasciitis that still plagues her into adulthood

Duckyfondant · 20/08/2025 10:09

Not all ballet pumps are equal. Well built shoes with elastic attaching them to the feet could be alright. Although still a bit crap in wet weathet

Sera1989 · 20/08/2025 10:19

I was at school when ballet pumps were fashionable the first time around and they were really impractical and uncomfortable. They're basically just made of cardboard. I would definitely steer clear of cheap ones, but would probably go for "dolly shoes" instead anyway which have the velcro strip and are made to be practical for school

Coffeeishot · 20/08/2025 10:22

I would get her a cheap pair for starting back and get her proper shoes for when they let rain in of fly off and she is hopping about trying to catch her shoe.

If you can afford it obviously, she is sadly getting to "that age" where you need to pick your battles.

MrsAvocet · 20/08/2025 10:32

You're right. They are bad for the feet and impractical. I'd probably look for a compromise and find a Mary-Jane style with a strap and some support.

DaisyChain505 · 20/08/2025 10:33

Pick up a pair from Primark for £5 and let her have them at home rather than school.

This is a better idea.

I don't know why I even open these threads. I juat get angry about all these uniform rules. It is one thing for parents not want to buy something for their kids, but schools banning different types of footwear. I just can't.

LifeBeginsToday · 20/08/2025 10:49

Not all ballet flats are awful. I've had some from Hush Puppies in the past and cuttently have some from Vivobarefoot. They were / are both good. But you're looking at minimum £60 a pair.
