Something in my eye

Someone help! I think I have got something in my eye and not sure how to get it out. Monday night it started to feel a bit irritated, I just thought I was tired and went to sleep. Woke up in the morning with it still irritated and tried rinsing it with water, that didn’t help so after work I bought some eye wash solution and washed it again. Now today I’ve woken up with it still feeling irritated and the eye lid red just on the inner like third of the eye lid and bumpy and itchy. With the eyelid slightly swollen. I am also a bit concerned that it may be glass as I knocked a glass over on Monday and it smashed and went everywhere. Is it worth going to the GP? I don’t know whether the GP can do anything to get it out.

Absolutely go to the GP

SereneSunrise · 20/08/2025 06:37

Yes go to your GP or optician, don’t mess about with your eyes. It could be a scratched cornea, that feels like something stuck in your eye that won’t clear.

JoshLymanSwagger · 20/08/2025 06:38

If you think it's glass, the GP won't really be able to do much.
You'll (unfortunately) need a trip to A&E I think.

HollyhockDays · 20/08/2025 06:38

I’d go to an optician first.

CrowMate · 20/08/2025 06:39

The GP won’t have the equipment. You’ll need an urgent care / eye clinic appointment or an optician might give you an emergency appointment - but if there is something in the eye will likely have to refer you to the eye clinic anyway. Our eye clinic is a walk in, but there should be information/ a number online you can Google for your area. Or call 111.

When this happened to me recently, it was an issue with my eyelid and fortunately not something in my eye.

Tchmmkln · 20/08/2025 06:40

Do you think it can wait till after work?

OP posts:
CrowMate · 20/08/2025 06:41

I would get the ball rolling sooner rather than later as you may not get an appointment right away.

No. Definitely not.

Book an emergency appointment at Soecsavers.
You will see an Optomotrist through the NHS and they will be able to look at your eye and advise if you need to go to the eye hospital

Do you think it can wait till after work?

No, this is urgent. Imagine if you wait and its too late and you lose your sight.

Obviously fingers crossed its just a little infection or irritation and nothing as dramatic as that but it really isn't worth the risk.

ExtraOnions · 20/08/2025 06:46

Go to the opticians .. you might have scratched your eye. I did mine a year ago, I didn’t go to the optician as I knew what I had done (distractedly rammed a mascara brush in these), just used the NHS website for advice.

It got better on its own after a few days.

Ohlifelife · 20/08/2025 07:23

Go to an opticians ASAP. They should take you as an emergency appointment.

Goatblu · 20/08/2025 08:43

I had this recently and got a same day appointment with my optician.

Canthelpmyselffromjoiningin · 20/08/2025 09:35

I went to A&E with similar symptoms. There was a shard of something in my eye and it had scratched my eyeball. Took them seconds to remove the shard, and needed antibiotics but my eye is fine now. I dont like to waste nhs resource but personally I would call this an emergency

HelloHattie · 20/08/2025 10:58

Go asap x

takealettermsjones · 20/08/2025 11:03

Ring 111 now from work, they will tell you where to go and can hopefully bump you up the list. Good luck

Scottishlass9 · 20/08/2025 11:07

I had something like this and got an emergency appt at the opticians, if you phone and describe the situation they should book you in. Then they gave me a referral for the eye clinic that same day (based in A&E) as I needed urgent treatment. It was all very efficient and they said the GP would have just sent me to the opticians so I would phone your local one first. Failing that, go to A&E. Like previous poster said, do not mess about with your eyes

TheNoonBell · 20/08/2025 11:41

Optician would be best, many now do first line for stuff in your eyes. DH was chopping down some bamboo last year and got a load of shards in his eye so called 111 and they told him to go to Boots where they picked the bits out.

Tchmmkln · 20/08/2025 17:13

I’ve still not had my eye looked at. Yesterday afternoon I went to the pharmacy and she just took a quick look at my eye and said it looked fine and sold me the eye wash solution. I phoned Specsavers this morning and they called me back to book an appointment but said it should be seen in the next 24 hours but they don’t have any avaliability so to try a different Specsavers. I phoned a different Specsavers they said to just walk in. I went and they didn’t have any availability for today so booked me an appointment tomorrow afternoon at the earliest appointment they could do.

I had this a few years ago and had a scratched cornea - had to use antibiotic eye ointment for 5ish days (can’t remember exactly)
Is it still bad/getting worse? If so definitely call 111 and they will be able to get you sorted.

Is Specsavers the only optician in your area?

makemineadecaf · 20/08/2025 17:23

My local hospital has an urgent eye unit you can self refer and book an appointment. But I’ve had a scratched cornea before - treatment was just eye drops for dry eyes to lubricate it.
