Holiday let damage policy

Husband and I are staying in a former pub, now holiday let i Wales in a few weeks time. We received an email stating that we had to fill in the preregistration form ahead of our stay. Most of it was fairly predictable, no. of guests, names, etc. The final question was to give permission that any damages caused during our stay could be charged to the card that I booked with.
DH and I have never damaged anything in a hotel room or anywhere else, and while I can understand why they might need to include such a clause it made me really uneasy.
AITA for not wanting to commit to that? What if something did break and we got charged even if it wasn't our fault? Isn't this what insurance is for? Or am I completely out of touch with the expectations of the hospitality industry? We don't go away often, if you can't already tell 😂

I wouldn't be giving permission for that. I'd pay for any damage, of course, if I agreed I was responsible and the charge was fair, but I'm not giving anyone a free pass to my bank account.

ETA there is no such clause in the self-catering accommodation we've used for the last 10 years.

No. I’ve been asked to provide a deposit many times. But not open access to my credit card. What is the exact wording and who did you book with?

It depends how it was phrased ... do you mean they've "blocked off" a few hundred on the card as a damage deposit like hire car companies do, or is it some kind of open access they want?

Usually they put a hold on your card for a few hundred. Presumably to cover those things like broken crockery, spoiled mattress etc that won't be worth claiming on insurance

I've stayed in many holiday cottages and have never been asked that. I've also only been asked once for a refundable deposit (which annoyed me and makes me think twice about booking with them again as they had £200 of my money for months!).

Which company did you book through?
