Buying a bigger bed to sleep better?

GreenSingingFrog · 19/08/2025 01:36

Hubby and I prefer very different sleeping arrangements - he loves thick duvets, lots and lots of pillows and cuddling all night. I like to have a cuddle then roll over and have my space with the lightest possible duvet and one flat pillow! If there’s extra duvet or pillows squished up against me I get really uncomfortable and can’t get to sleep, and it’ll even wake me up if I’m asleep already - probably I have some sensory issues but anyway I sleep badly as a result and often end up going off to the spare room.

Our bed is king size. When we’ve been to a holiday house with a superking, especially when we get a single duvet each, I sleep so much better.

We could fit a superking in our bedroom, but I’m worried that over time we’ll get used to it, and I’ll not get the benefit? Will I eventually just want more space? I’m also worried that when we stay with relatives in double and king size beds it’ll just be even more uncomfortable after being used to a superking.

Separate bedrooms isn’t the solution, as much as I want my space I do like him being near to me and also having a cuddle before we nod off. And while he understands why, it does make him sad when I go off to the spare room.

Anyone had the same sort of situation?

We bought a super king, and best thing ever. It improved our sleep no end!

HideousKinky · 19/08/2025 02:16

Get the superking and separate duvets as you know this works for you

Rtmhwales · 19/08/2025 02:37

Definitely! I’m from Canada and your king is smaller than our queen which is way too small for a couple. Our king is even bigger than your super king (apparently it’s a wee bit bigger than your emperor which I never heard of whilst living there). The super king size is great, could be even bigger. You won’t regret it. My DH is similar to yours. I just told him losing sleep was conducive to poor mental health and me being grumpy and he got over it.

What an overwhelming dilemma. I pray you find a solution to your conundrum.

ishimbob · 19/08/2025 06:33

Have you tried separate duvets on your existing bed?

We have separate duvets on our king size bed and it works well

AppleKatie · 19/08/2025 06:39

Get the super king- the novelty at home won’t wear off.

it will make it harder to sleep in places where you can’t have a superking but that’s the price of good sleep 95% of the time so do it!

Littleredgoat · 19/08/2025 06:41

Superking and have one superking duvet and get a single thin one of you that you can just keep for you.

AgentJohnson · 19/08/2025 06:42

Essentially you want your husband to stay on his side of the bed and not migrate to your side. I think the benefits long term will be minimal because space isn’t the issue. When DD was two, ex would put her in our bed whenever she woke in the middle of the night. This two year old used to occupy every square inch of a king but never once fell out of her 80 cm wide junior bed. Conclusion: the more space she had, the more space she utilised.

We have an emperor size bed and it is marvellous. So much lovely space and it makes such a difference to how we sleep. Get a bigger bed!

JackRobinson · 19/08/2025 06:48

We have a super king with separate mattresses and separate duvets. It's bliss 😊

KPPlumbing · 19/08/2025 06:52

We bought a super king for the same reason. It's been one of the biggest upgrades in quality of life ever!

And yes, occassionally having to sleep in a standard double when we visit friends and family is now torturous! I avoid it as much as I possibly can.

InterestedDad37 · 19/08/2025 07:00

Have the whole room fitted out as a 'mattress room' 🤔😀🛏️💤😴

Caroparo52 · 19/08/2025 07:17

I have a super king to myself. Bliss. Do it. The majority of the nights will be at home with better sleep.

TheDrunkenClam · 19/08/2025 08:06

I couldn’t fit a super king in so I bought a side by side duvet. One half (my side) is 4.5 tog and the other is 13.5 I think

DancingLions · 19/08/2025 08:29

I'd say do it but you will probably feel the difference when you have to stay elsewhere. I'm single and have a king size to myself. A couple of times this year I've stayed in places where I had to sleep in a single bed. It was awful! But that's not a reason to not have a nice bed at home.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 19/08/2025 11:20

DH and I have a King bed but use separate duvets as we also have different temps etc works well for us. I’d get the SK personally

toomuchfaff · 19/08/2025 11:49

Another recommending seperate covers (duvets or not...) game changer. No fighting for covers, no hogging the quilt, no arguments about a summer quilt vs winter - have both!

NimbleViewer · 19/08/2025 11:52

Super king with matching seperate single duvets all day long. Its so much better 😌

TheGrimSmile · 19/08/2025 11:55

Get a superking and two duvets. It's a no-brainer! ive got a superking even though we can hardly get in the bedroom now as our room is too small for it. We've always had a superking but when we moved house we downsized to king. I bought a lovely new king bed but it's had to go. It's too small. The difference between a SK and a K is huge. So we've got rid of our lovely new king bed and bought a cheap superking. Lesson learnt.

Same, you can fit 2 singles on a king size. Yes when the bed is empty there is overlap but once you're in bed with the duvets over you it's not noticeable.

We actually have two double duvets on our king - there is overlap but in a nice way. Basically we cuddle under the overlap and then separate

adlitem · 19/08/2025 12:07

So you don't want to buy a bigger bed to improve your sleep in case it does but then you want more room?

Buy the bigger bed. And two single duvets. This whole tiny bed with one shared duvet is a very British thing and not conducive to good sleep.

OddBoots · 19/08/2025 12:19

To your point about when you stay in other places. Staying with people might be an issue but we now get a twin room when staying in a hotel, if the beds are placed in a way that means we can push them together without causing any problems to the hotel we will do so but if not then at least we can still get a good night sleep.

Hotels making it easy to have separate duvets would be the ideal, we have been looked at most oddly when we have asked though. We haven't shared a duvet at home throughout our marriage.
