Spiders

Help I’m so scared of them. I have moved into my own flat following a break up of a 17 year relationship. I can’t cope with them. Just came in from a 13 hour shift to be greeted by a bloody tarantula I’m shaking. Any tips to keep them out.

Conkers

duckduckgooseduckagain · 18/08/2025 21:17

I don't think there is anything that can keep them out. They get in through the smallest space. I know you are scared but could you buy a spider catcher? (I got one from Amazon) with a long arm on it and bristles at the end that close and gently grab the spider, then you take it to a window/door and release it. It saves you having to get too close.

Redrosesposies · 18/08/2025 21:18

Cultivate your cellar spiders ( the far less scary, spindly ones). They eat the big fat hairy ones.😆😄

bellalou1234 · 18/08/2025 21:19

I think I’ll move out this was the biggest I ever seen.

I also agree with getting a spider catcher (they are amazing as you don't have to get too close, just make sure a window or door is open first so you can put it out easily) and you can also get a spray called no more spider spray. I spray round windows and doors and that normally stops them coming in.

WickedElpheba · 18/08/2025 21:22

I think Raid kills them if you really can't even pick them up with a spider catcher and don't have anyone else to get it

I'm much less scared than I used to be but I wouldn't be able to pick up a big one

Peppermint oil is meant to repel them

Moonlightfrog · 18/08/2025 21:22

Get a cat? They like to chase and eat them?

I can tolerate them and even catch them to remove them, I used to be petrified then I just had to learn to deal with them.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 18/08/2025 21:23

I'm exactly the same op. I dread this time of year. I spray a lavender based repellent everywhere and repeat every few days. I have a spider catcher that a pp mentioned. I hate them. I don't want a relationship but sometimes I consider it just on thr basis I'd have someone to remove the horrible spiders. Can't sleep if there's one in my bedroom.

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 18/08/2025 21:23

Peppermint oil does a great job of getting rid. You have to spray it regularly, though. Works well outside my front door where they love to cluster in disgusting groups of legs

DiordreBarlow · 18/08/2025 21:25

If you don't like cats then a terrier will deal with them for you.

This is what I was going to say! Leave your spindly ones in peace and let them help deal with the big ones.

I’ve read this in a few places, and it does seem to work in my house. But I’ve not properly googled it because I don’t want to see a picture of massive spiders!

bellalou1234 · 18/08/2025 21:30

I’ve got two Boston terriers who aren’t fussed and I only have them half the time so feel extra vulnerable when they are not here. I wouldn’t be able to open the window to get it out the catcher I’d be too scared it ran back in. I’m buying peppermint oil tomorrow. This was on another level. I keep my windows closed all the time

You genuinely have all my sympathy OP. I live alone and in the past have grabbed random passers by to remove huge spiders from my home. I've did the 'spider friendly' course at Edinburgh Zoo and am no longer completely terrified but I still do not like them one little bit and cannot live with them.

Indorex is your friend, around £14 from amazon. I spray it around all my doors and windows and, when necessary, directly on a spider. You don't have to get too close and it kills them pretty quickly. Conkers and peppermint oil do not work.

tara66 · 18/08/2025 21:55

Are you sure it isn't a small mouse? I have something similar but it is so quick and small - I have seen it 3 times and have traps down but nothing caught. - When I see it it's just a quick small dark blur even though the last time I saw it , it was actually rushing past me in corridor! I have wondered if it is a spider or a small mouse!! I'm in UK so presume mouse! I have been spraying with peppermint oil diluted with water. I did not see it for about a week so stopped spraying but now have resumed - good luck!

PumpkinPie2016 · 18/08/2025 22:03

I absolutely sympathise OP as I am petrified of them and couldn't even manage a spider catcher - I just freeze with fright.

Make friends with some neighbours who don't mind spiders - I have called upon neighbours in the past to assist (and never been refused 😂)

Honestly, I'd probably invite an axe murderer in if I had to!

BettysRoasties · 18/08/2025 22:05

Flea bomb kills spiders. I learnt this by accident as I don’t mind the corner of the ceiling spiders but needed to treat the house.

The older child keeps conkers in their room.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 18/08/2025 22:16

Oh fuck. I totally hear you op. Hoover with long nozzle?

Nah definitely a big hairy spider on my bedroom door stop, large as life. I’ll have a look at all the recommendations. I’m itchy and hyper vigilant. I’ve got a glass of wine to help me sleep. Bloody spider.

Is this a regional thing? I’m in London and rarely get house spiders. I do have cats but I don’t think they catch them - I just don’t think they’re here! I can’t remember the last time I saw one in the house. We do get the spindly ones, though.

sparklychair · 18/08/2025 22:25

If I lived in Australia or another country with poisonous spiders I could sympathise, but if in the UK why spiders? Is there a limit on how many legs a creature can have?
DH, for instance, got savaged by a squirrel(4), I am not keen on earwigs(6). But we can deal with them.
I can understand a phobia - not wanting to touch a particular thing, or maybe eat it. But you can trap it and put it out, surely? I love spiders because they keep the clothes moths and other insects down.
No so much their close little relatives the ticks (8 legs like spiders), however. Sucking my blood and giving me Lyme disease... straight to arachnid afterlife.
