Reeves' plan to tax houses over 500k

1000 replies

FridayFeelingmidweek · 18/08/2025 20:25

Just been reading news about Reeves's plan to tax https://www.theguardian.com/money/2025/aug/18/rachel-reeves-stamp-duty-property-tax-council-tax

AIBU to already be worrying about living in the south east? Surely this will force people either to never move, or move away from SE/London.

I'm glad that there is finally something that isn't negatively affecting areas outside the SE but does she actually understand that 500k isn't much down here - 3 bed terrace at best.

Reeves considers replacing stamp duty with new property tax

Exclusive: Treasury examines options including tax on homes sold for more than £500,000 as well as overhaul of council tax

By the metrics that Labour accused Truss of crashing the economy, Labour have done so twice. The worst bit is they doggedly hang on to Reeves, at least Tories got rid of Truss!

That not true. The £ hasn’t crashed, there have been no IMF warnings and interest rates have decreased in the last year. Criticise all you like but don’t make stuff up.

FrodisCapering · 19/08/2025 08:02

Letgoofmyblank · 19/08/2025 07:15

But she’s nowhere near as bad as Liz Truss was. Nowhere near. Liz and Kwazi announced proposals that everyone had told her were madness and would crash the bond market, but she did it anyway. She was such a fucking idiot it was mindblowing. Labour are still streets ahead of the Tories. Which is why I think Reform will get in and they are the biggest idiots by far.

Well I was far better off under a Conservative government. I hate the Labour Party with every fibre of my being.

They're all as useless as each other and don't expect Nige to be any better.

I am talking about gilts/bonds which are mainly reasons Labour went after her. There are literally tweets from Starmer and Reeves.

Just going to stagnate the market

as someone who has paid over £300,000 for rent over my adult life. I’d have paid off my first rented house by now for that amount.
the house hasn’t got bigger, but the cost has doubled.
I will have to continue paying that until I die, mortgaged owners don’t have that worry. so I will pay out at least that again, probably much more as rent rises.

they don’t live with the bank asking them to leave, pass all the checks, find the money for deposit boxes etc and move with 8 weeks notice.
they’ve been able to paint a child’s bedroom. Have pets. Plant bulbs in the garden and see them grow. Let the kids use paints in the house without fear they might get it on the carpet and lose their deposit.

Life as a renter is hard, relentless and seeps into every single decision you make.

Absolutely. It’s much harder at the moment, too. We have been evicted twice in a year due to the owners circumstances changing and them wanting to avoid the difficulties if the coming changes. Trying to find increasingly eye watering deposits, many thousands of pounds, and then the affordability checks have tightened dramatically, almost no interest in your long history of paying rent on time in full. It’s all about affordability ratio. There are going to be a lot of middle class renters made homeless very soon.

twistyizzy · 19/08/2025 08:09

Why is anyone surprised that Reeves is planning this?
Anyone wanting to sell a 500K+ house should just cut down on Netflix/avacados etc surely? If you can afford a 500K house then you can afford to pay the tax on it. So many posters have previously said they would be happy to pay more tax, well here's your chance.

Labour ALWAYS come for MC and these lot are driven by Fabian values. Zero sympathy with any of the metropolitan champagne socialists who brayed for Farming + Education Tax who are now facing their own version of this I'm afraid.

ACynicalDad · 19/08/2025 08:09

How to screw London. Also little incentive to vote for ac council that will keep council tax down. But that suits Labour.

i think they should split the top band in about 3 and have much higher tax there than all through.

MumOfManyAliases · 19/08/2025 08:10

No tax increases on working people they said. Aren’t home owners working people?

Why not tax gambling?

twistyizzy · 19/08/2025 08:12

PersephoneSeethes · 19/08/2025 08:10

Why not tax gambling?

Because who do you think bankrolls Labour? Them and private healthcare company owners.
They were so keen to tax education because seemingly that's more damaging to the nation than gambling!

MumOfManyAliases · 19/08/2025 08:10

Nope, remember they have released a list of who they consider to be "working people " (from the eligibility criteria for Civil Service internships). Working people = train drivers but not nurses or taxi drivers etc.

HerLivingontheHill · 19/08/2025 08:13

"The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money"

Reeves needs this above her bed.

FatherFrosty · 19/08/2025 08:13

The funny thing about the NI rise is conservatives did it first. Then tories brought it down, despite warnings from the IMF not to and being told it would leave a massive black hole. They did it anyway.

Labour have put it back where it should have been. That still leaves years of that black hole from conservatives cutting it.

Yeah those Nordic countries using a socialist ethics in a capitalist economy.
broke. The lot of them.

Labour had lied all along about the black hole.
It has been increased (tripled) by their own plans to give more to train drivers and public sector workers, illegal migrants and the hotels they need , etc.

They inherited the fastest growing economy in the G7- now they've ruined it.

I was far better off under the conservatives too, but I don’t just think of me, me, me, me, me!

Council tax and stamp duty are broken taxes. A percentage of your house value paid every year is a much, much better way of taxing. Fairer, no cliff edges, doesn’t prevent people from moving.

Don't forget they are rich in natural resources.

Illegal migrants don’t get money

Of course they do. But they have maintained public services and quality of life better.
mainly because they didn’t sell everything off.

Well, I have a massive problem with that. These companies are so profitable and they are literally sucking the money straight out of vulnerable people who can’t afford it, they are causing so much child poverty and domestic abuse. It’s like being funded by Columbian/Romanian drug cartels. Why is any left leaning person just sitting back and not screaming from the sky about this? It’s so utterly incomprehensible to me.

Illegal migrants don’t get money

Oh but they do. In Richmond on Thames the ones waiting for their applications to be processed are given £50 gym vouchers.

Have you any idea of the £millions a day it's costing to house these asylum seekers.

They are illegal as they have come by illegal means.
Until their applications are assessed they have come here illegally.
It's called Small Boats.

Labour have deported more failed asylum seekers than conservatives had in the same period.

they actually need to spend more money to get the processing done quicker. This will bring down the hotel bill in the long run and mean people aren’t left in limbo, which causes so much of the issue

JOKE!

You are living in a fantasy world.

There has been close to 50K arriving in the last year. More than ever.
Keir is a laughing stock with his smash the gangs.
