To want polyester banned!!

It is truly the devil’s fabric - who on earth thought that making clothes out of a material that is essentially plastic would be a good idea?

It doesn’t decompose, instead it simply goes and sits in landfill for 100s of years. Microplastics are released during each and every wash, polluting our water supply. It isn’t breathable and makes you sweat like a pig, to worsen this the fabric holds oil and therefore traps scent..! Bloody awful stuff on all accounts

I try and avoid it if possible but unfortunately I’m forced to wear it almost every day as it is my work uniform - I’m considering asking if I can pay to get a cotton version made. So sick of it!

I agree and if it wasn't available the microtrend would likely disappear with it

Cheeseandquackers21 · 18/08/2025 19:42

Also I havent done much research into fabrics, but one slight rabbit hole I went into mentioned fabrics except cotton and natural ones can mess up hormones etc. So it also got me thinking about my clothes and blankets etc. Whilst I can?'t replace my whole wardrobe its made me consider what I buy from now on and even if higher price I will try and buy as much cotton and natural fiber materials.

BurntBroccoli · 18/08/2025 19:52

It’s so hot, horrible and scratchy, especially when they use it for blouses and tops.

LadyKenya · 18/08/2025 19:52

I have found some good jumpers, and dresses in charity shops, made of cotton, wool, or linen. They feel so much better on my skin. I buy good quality, so that it lasts as well.

I’ve totally changed the way I shop in recent years and definitely value quality over quantity. I majorly downsized my wardrobe and instead of shopping on the high street I buy higher end pieces (mainly off Vinted..!) made from natural fibres. They look better and last longer. The quality difference in vintage clothes is amazing (and a bit depressing when compared to today’s fast fashion standards)

Agreed. And on a personal level, I get electric shocks when I wear it 😫i stopped a long time ago. And I don't buy it for the kids now either (majority of the time)

XenoBitch · 18/08/2025 20:15

A lot of work uniforms and things like hospital scrubs are made from polyester, or a polycotton blend.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 18/08/2025 20:22

I've got contact dermatitis, so I prefer to wear natural fibres as synthetic fabrics tend to make the rash appear.

It's getting really hard to find clothing that isn't synthetic in the shops. I find it really difficult shopping for clothes now.

Needspaceforlego · 18/08/2025 20:37

Its a bit harsh to want it banned. Lots of sports and outdoor wear is polyester or types or man made fibres. Which is much better than stuff people wore 60 or 70 years ago. Better at keeping people dry and lighter weight.

Pure cotton doesn't wear as well as polyester / cotton mixes,,including things like bedsheets.

But people should have more choice in the shops. A few years ago loads of M&S ladies t-shirts were polyester and felt rotten

Snazzy73 · 18/08/2025 20:38

I recently saw a celebrity wearing a dress on Instagram. I know, influenced! Anyway I went to look at said dress online - 100% polyester and nearly £200. Needless to say I didn’t buy it!

Hankunamatata · 18/08/2025 20:39

Is sportswear polyester? Then nope.

Bloody love it for teens. Easy washed and dried, no ironing nong - they live in sports wear and makes things so much easier

Cel77 · 18/08/2025 20:40

Me too. I avoid polyester and make sure I check the fabric of the clothes I want to buy. It's a horrid fabric for many reasons.

itsabeautifuldayjuly · 18/08/2025 20:41

Yet we insist on children wearing it every day just to save 10 minutes of ironing per week….
Both of mine wear full cotton uniform (apart from blazer and PE kit), and its literally 10 minutes ironing per week. Well worth it for them not basically wearing plastic bags.
My pure cotton bedsheets are 15 years old and look great.

CalzoneOnLegs · 18/08/2025 20:41

I hate it

CalzoneOnLegs · 18/08/2025 20:44

@Needspaceforlego it may not last as long as cotton for bedding (thats because it contains plastic ) but my god I’d rather have cotton for a shorter time then dispose of it and buy new safe in the knowledge that it will decompose naturally plus I have had a few years of comfortable sleep.

FlappyFish · 18/08/2025 20:49

I won’t wear it for anything other than some fitness tops. I check labels religiously. I’m fine with viscose, though that’s a pain to iron. It’s all about how it feels. It’s just horrible.

Also school uniforms 😠

It’s shit enough kids have to sit down all day under fluorescent lights, but they have to do so in plastic clothing. some items at primary are cotton like polo shirts but most of the rest is polyester. SO unnatural.

It may be lightweight etc but exercising is the worst time to wear polyester/plastic as when you sweat/get warm it ‘activates’ the plastic fibres making them even more toxic for us. All those LuLu Lemon-style skin tight leggings have to be the absolute worst as they are right up against your skin.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 18/08/2025 21:09

I try and avoid polyester clothing where possible.
However I do wear sports wear which is dry quick or whatever the brand name is. It does dry a lot quicker and is good for doing gym classes in.

DdraigGoch · 18/08/2025 21:12

I hate wearing my work uniform in summer

Today's Inside Science suggests at the end that if we banned polyester, we'd struggle to clothes everyone with the amount of land that would be needed to grow cotton, flax, etc. So it's not thst simple.

Yes, and it clung on to sweat. So it could be freshly washed and you freshly showered. On a hot day, you end up stinking.

That makes sense. Polyester bad after the end of its life, but cotton bad to produce.

Gnarab24 · 18/08/2025 21:29

Was listening to something on the radio the other day and someone was quoted as saying that if we were to make everything we need out of cotton we’d need all the land in the world to grown the cotton.
Polyester has its place -fast fashion is the problem.
The mentality that we can wear something once and then just bin it/sell it/never wear it again, that’s the problem

I don't know anyone who buys something, wears it once, then bins it. Who are these people?
I buy stuff from Primark and wear it until it falls apart.
