What kind of absolute bastard would you have to be to report someone for clubcard points. 😅

love this!

A tiny corner shop? Maybe. A giant supermarket like Iceland? You know the old saying, if you see someone shoplifting, no you didn’t. Especially if it’s baby formula or baby-related.

Why especially baby stuff.
What about a tin of beans for elderly?
Not affording food affects all ages. One demographic is not more worthy of being excused than another.

caffelattetogo · 18/08/2025 20:28

Absolutely, I could never report someone stealing food

MyRootinTootinBaby · 18/08/2025 20:41

Stealing a tv or drink/razors/non essentials then maybe I’d say something at the checkout to staff. Stealing chicken nuggets and the like from Iceland, I haven’t seen anything. And I wouldn’t be hanging round for them to prove said person was shoplifting to have £1 uploaded to my card.

Really? Not even a load of steaks? My local Iceland have their bigger steaks and joints of beef and pork in plastic security cases. It is not because people who are starving are nicking them.

1offnamechange · 18/08/2025 18:48

one of the stupidest sayings ever. I can't believe people who trot this out are actually naive enough to believe someone nicking baby-related stuff is actually doing it because they have a starving child at home they cannot feed any other way (any GP would/could refer for free formula if they were contacted, let alone charity options) and not because it has a good black market resale value.

Meh, I still don’t care. We live on a burning planet in a post-capitalist hellscape, grafting like fuck for little reward. If they want to steal steaks to sell in Spoons, I couldn’t care less frankly.

Mewling · 18/08/2025 20:48

@intrepidpanda Fair point, I’ll overlook the pensioners as well. ;-)

Why? A huge amount of food is stolen for resale.

You think everyone shoplifting those things is doing it to use themselves? Not doing it to order and selling it in round the doors? You’re deluded if you do.

cramptramp · 18/08/2025 20:56

I’d report them for nothing. I can’t stand shoplifters and the people who buy from them.

As someone who works for Iceland, you are correct.

The meat joints get hit a lot, hence why they’re put in protective casing. Thieves are clever and still manage to find ways to get the casing off.

I would have thought they would just run out with them now.
Tesco now have a lot of cleaning products and nicotine replacement stuff behind sliding doors where you can only remove one item at a time.
It it is really sad to see these measures being needed to be taken.

RachelGreep87 · 18/08/2025 21:21

Not really worth getting stabbed, is it?

Despite the belief, most shoplifters are not armed.

Most will yeah, but we had an instance where a manager had just replenished some meat joints. In the time it took her to walk from the shop floor to the office, someone had one out the fridge, undone the box and half inched it leaving the empty box on top of the freezer

susiedaisy1912 · 18/08/2025 21:42

So be rather than paying for security they’re expecting the public to grass each other up. 🤦‍♀️

Their shoplifting puts prices up for everyone.
Shoplifting is wrong.

I’ve seen someone clear a whole shelf of meat, in front of staff, and walk out of a supermarket - staff said they couldn’t do anything.

THisbackwithavengeance · 19/08/2025 07:00

I’d do it for free as well. I hate thieving bastards.

Offthepath · 19/08/2025 07:09

I once saw a kid stealing toilet paper, probably the saddest thing I ever saw in my life. The shopkeeper actually saw him and yelled but the kid ran off and the shopkeeper didn't bother chasing him, probably felt sorry for him. Possibly the parents sent him, no kid nicks bog roll by choice (didn't look like a dare, the kid was green in the face). But I definitely wish social services had got involved for the sake of the kid's future.

I was in Tesco Express when a man came in and stole nappies and wipes. The staff said he does it often and is known for stealing other baby items in other local shops. He also regularly steals packets of steak, salmon, chicken, washing powder, all fairly high value items. He’s not stealing them for his family because he’s struggling, he’s just a scummy thief.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 19/08/2025 07:16

I've reported shoplifters several times. My husband calls me an amateur store detective. Boots, Wilko, WHSmith, Sainsbury's - I don't hesitate to alert a member of staff. If I shopped in Iceland I'd probably bag myself some sweet loyalty points 😄

And none of them were struggling mothers trying to feed their babies - it was things like razor blades, air fresheners, Ferrero Rocher they were stuffing in their bags for life.

Sesma · 19/08/2025 07:20

All the gullible, thinking it's for the hungry children.

goingtotown · 19/08/2025 07:37

Lock the door until they put items back or pay.

ThatCyanSheep · 19/08/2025 07:41

This may be an unpopular opinion but I’d never step in to a situation where someone is shoplifting.

I’ve seen an old woman acting confused and walk out of Poundland with a packet of ham before - she may well have been genuinely confused, she also could have been starving and needed that to survive. I’ve seen a young mum tuck a tin of formula and some nappies beneath her pram and walk out of boots. I’m not going to intervene then because who knows if that ham or formula is the difference between those people going hungry or not? When those nappies might be the difference for that mum for a week?

I’m also not going to step in when it’s a gang that’s clearing the shelves. No way am I getting myself hurt to protect a company’s bottom line.
