to ask what your cleaner does / how long they are in for

Sorry I know this isn't an AIBU question but this board is always really responsive

I am considering getting a cleaner and wondering what other people do

How often does your cleaner come - weekly, fortnightly, monthly
How long are they in for - ours all seem to be minimum 2 hours which is fine
What do they do in that time or do you / your cleaner have a room rota in place for example bathroom is every week and they might do another room
Do you think your cleaner is a help or did you decide it was a nuisance?

I know price is variable up and down the country so I'm not bothered about that.

Just looking to manage my expectation before I start messaging people.

Our house isn't big, 2 bed 1 bathroom, small kitchen.

Appreciate any insights or experiences

2 hours a week, but she goes once she has done agreed tasks, which we are happy with. Kitchen, main bathroom, two en-suites, hoovers whole house and dusts as she sees fit. £40 a week. I suspect she’ll put her prices up at Christmas. I would.

2.5 hrs a week, does floors (hoover and steams), bathrooms, some dusting, cleans the kitchen. She's not great though, doesn't get in the corners and cobwebs apparently! Not really a time issue as even if I ask her to stay longer it's the same. She's £20 an hour, would like to find someone else, but with cleaners it seems better the devil you know as I've tried others who have been awful!

A cleaner is a huge help to us. It means that we don’t have to spend our downtime or family time cleaning (although I do clean the kitchen floor regularly). She also empties bins around the house and if I leave bedding out she changes sheets. I’ve always said that a cleaner is cheaper than a divorce 😂

Weekly, 4 hours for a 4 bed, 3.5 bathroom house. I think 3.5 hours would be enough. She does all rooms apart from the front room weekly, and mostly uses her own initiative to do the odd extra bits that only need cleaning occasionally on an ad hoc basis when she has time.

I work from home while she’s here and it’s no hassle. She tries to do my office while I’m out on the school run.

Thank you, this is helpful.

A cleaner is also going to prevent a divorce over here 😂

All of your cleaners seem to get a lot done in their allocated time, my bathroom and kitchen are my non negotiable and I'd like them cleaned weekly. Hoping there's enough time to do some other bits in the two hours.

I don't know what a good cleaner is but I am about to find out lol.

Whatever you do, make sure you have enough cleaning clothes. I had several clients who expected a house clean with one of 2 cloths. One gross person chucked a food encrusted tea towel at me from his laundry basket when I asked for a clean cloth

Noooooooooooooooooooooooo that's disgusting

Good point actually, does the client provide the cleaning materials or does the cleaner bring their own or is it personal preference?

My old cleaner used to do bathroom, kitchen and downstairs toilet, vac 4 rooms plus stairs, hall, landing and dust what she could reach, change 1 double bed. Sometimes cleaned the front door, or wiped a couple of windows. 1.5 hours. New cleaner is not always the same person. Some are better at a quick clean round, so most of the above in 1 hour. Others are better at deep cleaning, so might take longer to get round but do a better deep clean of the bathroom and downstairs toilet.

WonderingWanda · 18/08/2025 16:13

My beat cleaner could do my whole 3 bed, 1 bath, 1 ensuit, 1wc house in 2 hrs. Hoover, mop Hard floors downstairs and bathrooms. Clean bathrooms. Wipe down worktops / table. Dust and polish surfaces in lounge, bedrooms and playroom. Clean mirror wardrobe doors and mirrors in bathrooms. Every week. Then when done would do other things as and when they needed doing e.g. cleaning stairs glass / insides of windows / oven / dishwasher. She didn't do deep cleaning e.g. pulling out furniture, skirting boards etc

This is music to my ears. Sounds like a lot can be done in the two hours 🙌🏻 xx

3hrs each week, 4 bedroom house. She hoovers, sweeps, mops and dusts throughout, cleans kitchen, toilets and bathroom, polishes furniture and then does whatever needs doing until the 3 hours is up.
It’s been so good to have the burden of relentless cleaning off my hands, and since she began we’ve had the energy to tackle the garden and get more DIY done round the house.
Having regular cleaning every week means we tackle the table doom piles regularly too.
