To ask do you see the end of your laundry basket?

I will ask the basic question first…

If you have a family of 4, sporty children etc. do you see the end of your laundry basket each week?

if so why do you think that is and if not then why not?

Yes for about 20 minutes. I do all our washing on the weekend. It’s awful, but I hated the “wash a bit every day” even more.

Caspianberg · 17/08/2025 11:24

4 children? Or do you mean 2 adults and 2 children?

Household of 3 people here, I don’t find the laundry builds up to be honest. Things dirty get washed, but we don’t wash things for the sake of it ie jumper in winter lasts several wears

Yes of course. 4 adults and 1 teen.

Adults sons do their own but it all gets done every week. I do some during the week if I have time/ particular things are needed but if not I do the rest at the weekend.

Dabberlocks · 17/08/2025 11:27

Yes - for once!

the contents are currently strewn in colour-coded piles on the landing and have been there since yesterday lunchtime

Perpetuallywondering · 17/08/2025 11:27

2 adults 3 children here, and no, it’s never empty - but it’s also very rarely overflowing. I do a wash overnight every night and sometimes an extra one in the daytime. We don’t have a drier so drying is challenging in the wetter months.

Ironing on the other hand… I never see the bottom of that basket 🙄

randomchap · 17/08/2025 11:28

Very very occasionally, when there's enough sun to get a few loads dried outside. And I'm in during the day to do it

Then I'll find a few dirty socks hidden in the dc's rooms.

onlyconnect · 17/08/2025 11:29

Oh how I’d love to! There are only three of us but it’s endless.

redskydelight · 17/08/2025 11:33

If you literally never see the bottom of your laundry basket with a family of 4, you either have a very small washing machine, don't wash very often or are washing things that aren't really dirty.

Even if we assume that everyone gets through a full normal outfit (although jeans/jumpers etc don't need washing daily) and one sports outfit per day, washing overnight and the odd extra load at the weekend should keep on top of it.

Squishymallows · 17/08/2025 11:35

Yes absolutely. We are a family of 5 with 3 children under 5. I do a dark wash and a light wash and the basket is empty. Next time there is enough for a wash maybe colours and bed sheets I put them on and the basket is empty again. Voila! But realise it’s easy for me as I’m sahm. So I just check the basket regularly

i only iron clothes for special days eg going to a wedding. No other ironing done, husband irons his own work shirts once a month

BiddyPopthe2nd · 17/08/2025 11:36

Yes - because we do a wash most days while at work, and throw it on the clothes horse or washing line or into tumble dryer when we get home. Dry things go into the clean laundry basket and get folded at the weekend and all ironing done from that while watching country file on Sundays.

So we usually manage to see the bottom of both baskets intermittently. But never for long. I hear ya on the sporty teens!

Shatteredallthetimelately · 17/08/2025 11:36

There was a time my DH could have hidden my birthday presents at the bottom of my laundry basket and I wouldn't have found them.

Only the two of us now so the washing is minimal in comparison.

No3392 · 17/08/2025 11:36

Nope. 1 adult and 2 teens.

I keep meaning to do a clothing cull, I think that's the issue. But life is too short, and id rather be doing other things.

Lyra87 · 17/08/2025 11:38

Family of 3, with 1 toddler...nope, never. Between change of clothes in nursery from messy play/food on clothes and gym gear which includes towels it's ridiculous. I'm hoping by the time DD is in school it won't be so bad!

SheherazadesSpringNonsense · 17/08/2025 11:39

Almost never - 2 adults, three teenage girls

Callmemummynotmaaa · 17/08/2025 11:45

Family of five here, two working parents, childcare not in the home, no cleaner. Laundry basket empty possibly every second week - but never ironed folded and put away at the same time. Ie it will all get washed, but I’ll be out of steam and it will end up sorted into each of the kids rooms - that then takes an evening or two at bed/bath time to be put away and in that time the laundry baskets are full again. It’s continuous. If I’m trying to avoid the tumble dryer it’s quite literally impossible (even in summer). What has helped is dropping standards: sheets and towels washed less frequently. Kids do uniforms and PJ’s in term time midweek (rather than change into clothes as that was creating a third set of food covered items - 3 under 5 years). I often take the baby’s tops off to feed him in vague hope of reducing mess.

Starlight40 · 17/08/2025 11:48

Yes, 2 adults and 3 children. I do wash darks 3 times a week.

myfitbitisfucked · 17/08/2025 11:49

No. Never. Despite there rarely being a day that at least one full wash isn’t on.

minipie · 17/08/2025 11:56

Yes. I have two sporty tweens and DH and I both get through exercise kit too, as well as normal clothes. But I have an 11 kg machine which really really helps. Can’t recommend a big machine enough.

Generally each week I do 1-2 light washes, 1-2 dark, 1 towels and 1 bedding. Occasional delicates. So maybe 5 loads per week. It’s not too bad.

Nothing gets ironed except DH work shirts and the odd dress of mine. Probably would look better if we ironed more but 🤷‍♀️

itsonlyjoan · 17/08/2025 12:01

I wash every day 4 kids 2 are teenagers constant towels me and hubby atm on my line teddies lol

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 17/08/2025 12:02

Not often, the way I do my washing means that there will usually be some at the bottom of the basket but, on the upside, I never get to the top of the basket unless we are coming back from holiday. It works for me, it's not like there's a gold star waiting at the bottom, it's just washing. Family of five, fwiw.

Itsjustnotthevibe · 17/08/2025 12:06

I did this morning for about 30 minutes before I filled it up with bedsheets and towels! But I do now have three loads on the line that I need to deal with later and already know that I have 3 loads to do tomorrow. I try to keep on top of it, as soon as there is a loads worth I will put a wash on.

NOresponsibility · 17/08/2025 12:11

I dont own a laundry basket any thing dirty goes straight in the machine.
I switch it on when theres enough to wash.

HostaCentral · 17/08/2025 12:19

Yes, but maybe that means we're dirty buggers. Takes a while to fill the basket. Never had to do a wash every day.....maybe five loads a week.... One dark, one light, one towels, one bedding, one random.

DysmalRadius · 17/08/2025 12:23

Yes. Everyone has their own basket and they do a wash when it's full so there's no sorting, it just goes back up to their room when it comes out of the drier. No ironing, older kids are 10 and 14 and have been doing their own for a couple of years. Swimming stuff all goes on together as it is line dried and then goes straight back into swimming bags when done.
