... and I am 6 months pg with no 3. I am not huge, but was pretty small with the first two but even so? Best comment recently was "you are so much bigger than (my SIL) at the same stage" - a)I don't think i am much bigger and b) it was her first bloody child, so i am likely to be with the third! I am not generally paranoid about my size/weight as I am normally a healthy 10/12 but she is beginning to make me feel massive.
And while I am on it, why does everyone think it is ok to comment on your size when you are pregnant (either big or small or growing - i have had all 3)?

My MIL did the same thing to me in last pg.
Eventually I asked her if she would tell me I was fat if I wasn't pregnant...cue confused look from MIL, so, I asked what gives you the right to say it when I am pregnant??

Swedes · 30/05/2008 12:02

Tell her the father of the baby was 6'6" and 18 stone.

alittlebitshy · 30/05/2008 12:04

people keep asking me how much longer. when i say 2 more months they give me a and a . fgs - i'm big, but not overly big for a 7 months pregant woman, esp one who had a 9lb9 babay last time and who is only 5ft 2. They aure know how to make you contort in mirrors to see excatly what is it they are seeing.......

Elk · 30/05/2008 12:27

My MIL told me I was still fat 10 days after giving birth to dd1. Funny I was wearing normal clothes in a size 10 (not exactly my definition of fat!).

Last week she told me I looked fat when I was trying on a fancy dress outfit over the top of my normal clothes!!!! I am a size so even with 2 sets of clothes on I doubt I looked that fat.

ps- I looked like I'd swallowed a sofa both times I was pregnant and got lots of comments about that.

castille · 30/05/2008 12:39

Cod's right, she can't think of anything else to say.

Say hmmmm and change the subject.

pleasechange · 30/05/2008 14:04

Elk that's awful, I thought my MIL was tactless!
People are so rude when you're pregnant, like anything goes, including all personal comments. There was a girl in my office who, every time she saw me, said I was getting bigger. Honestly, what did she expect. She's not exactly waif like herself. I don't understand this idea that they don't know what else to say though - how about "you're looking very well" or "how are you feeling?". Not difficult, is it!

higgys · 30/05/2008 14:27

I never minded the 'aren't you getting big' stuff - I had twins so very much a statement of fact.
It was the people that would say, 'you're not very big for twins' that used to bug me. It would put me into a blind panic about the babies not growing properly.

Next time, just say 'well that's what's supposed to happen' and get over it.

Also thought of an end of discussion answer (though not brave enough to use it) "yes, I am aren't I, but still not as big as you...". but perhaps that's just sinking too far.

Tell her she's much fatter than your mother.

People just feel the need to say something. I'm 25 wks with DC2 and I am very much aware of how much bigger I am this time around.

The best ones are from people who clearly have no experience of pregnancy - my childless boss, the postman, the ramdom geezer I met walking the dog the other day - I'm collecting the comedy comments.

After walking for half an hour together while our dogs ran riot, Random Geezer suddenly looked at me and said, "Well, you look like you've been having a nice time?! Phnar Phnar", followed by, "So, what you got in there then, a baby hippo?!"

The only thing you can do is laugh and smile and say "Fuck off and die" under your breath.

My mother keeps telling me "I was never THAT big, I was NEVER"
and has been since I was about 6 months gone

she also asked when I was about 3 months what size I would need if she bought me any clothes
I said well maternity clothes are kind of loose so you just buy the usual size normally and they have room for your bump

she said "well yes but I notice you have REALLY put on a lot of weight all over"

MillGuff · 30/05/2008 15:48

Oh yes, and my really sweet, thoughtful and LOVELY mum bought me some "maternity" clothes (normal clobber, but bigger).

A little part of me wept when I looked at the size 22 labels... it was a bit of a baptism of fire to put them on.

Even she said, "Blimey, they're a bit big, aren't they?" At 10 weeks pregnant and a size 12, I should have hoped so.

She did well though, as I am now revelling in them...!

Tenacious G - Random Geezer was a wheezing 70+ grandfather in flexible-soled shoes with an unhealthy amateur interest in writing comedy for radio. I wish I'd suggested that he might want to rethink those quips and get back to reading the Unnovations Report in a reclining armchair, but as usual, the gormless twonk in me plumped for the cheap, unheard insult.
