My DH was made redundant. He had a final interview this week followed by a brief teams call where he was told it had been narrowed down to him and another candidate. He was told there was nothing between them. Then he was told a decision would be made this afternoon and he would be updated. Tonight he gets an email from HR saying that he’d get feedback early next week.
I feel like if they are going to say “no” just say no and stop messing him around. I just feel like it’s a very unkind thing to do.
Why waste everyone’s time.
Has anyone else experienced this?

It sounds as though they've offered it to the other candidate but haven't received his answer yet and don't want to lose your dh if the other candidate turns it down.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 15/08/2025 18:49

Surely feedback means he hasn't got the job?

Ah I've just re-read your post. So they were going to update him tonight, well they did update him - they advised him that he would get feedback next week which would strongly indicate that he hasn't been successful because you don't get feedback if you've been successful, you just get a job offer.

Sorry, They probably think they are being clear. I'd be tempted to email back and advise them I was withdrawing my application

Arlanymor · 15/08/2025 18:51

It's not necessarily the company messing him around, it could be the other candidate...

juicelooseabootthishoose · 15/08/2025 18:52

Yes i have been through the same thing this week. Receiving numerous update calls from a recruiter (which is something!) but in the end i kind of wanted him to stop calling unless it was a decision! I did
get one in the end and a positive outcome. One very large company kept me waiting over a month!

Spirallingdownwards · 15/08/2025 18:53

The decision makers may easily have been held up in different client meetings or had emergencies. It's never a no until its a no

LizzieBananas · 15/08/2025 18:54

They are probably giving the other candidates the weekend to decide

G5000 · 15/08/2025 18:55

they have made an offer to the other candidate and are negotiating the terms. Keeping options open in case they can't come to an agreement.

BBQthisweekend · 15/08/2025 19:36

Yes, as others have said they’re waiting for a decision from the other candidate, and have probably worded it incorrectly around feedback next week.

I’ve been in the same position as a hiring manager a few times - you think you’ll get a firm answer from option 1 by EOD/similar, then they try and negotiate further or ask for more time. No point giving your DH a ‘no’ if option 1 hasn’t signed a contract yet.

Thank you this makes a lot of sense.

It’s very hard as he really wanted this job and I want him to let it go mentally so he can move forward.

Thank you also to the other posters it’s helpful to hear a POV that’s neutral

Feedback just means the outcome of an interview. I think on this occasion it does sound like they've offered to the other candidate but I wouldn't make an assumption that 'feedback' means it's negative in other processes.
