To think WTF has happened to the art of queuing?

On holiday at a british seaside resort and I have been tutted at more times I care for, for goingnto queue up at along bar by simply finding a large space and standing there. I look behind and there is one long single file queue throughout the venue when there are plenty of tills spead out along the bar and plenty of staff. It's given me the rage- what is going on?

i was surprised when I saw the one single-queue at the bar thing at a gig I went to. Lots of young people there and it seemed the norm to them.

It does make sense, and is fair and easier on the bar staff. But I kind of weirdly missed the old way! Calculating where to best stand, catching the bar-person’s eye (or trying to), chatting to others waiting, expecting them to say, “no, she was first” if they were served out of turn and vice versa. It was a whole thing that involved some skill and nerve!

Maybe a psychological thing but seeing the long snaking queue verses a one deep few people.along the bar gives totally different vibes!
It doesn't feel right!

Yes! As someone who has worked in bars and occasionally dives behind to help out where I work now, this change is noticeable from the other side too! And when you're on the other end of the bar and ask who's next they don't always move down to you and stay where they are, shouting their order meaning you are then ferrying drinks, money and change or card machines back to that point creating congestion on both sides of the bar whilst the other end is empty.

I mean it does make it easier to know who's next and it does sort of work when people move down to the till that's available next, and has all but eliminated the one that elbows their way through, stands in front of whoever was there and yells their order at you while waving a £20 note up your nose, while the person who was actually there first then yells at you that they were next before you've even finished the last round, and you know they were next, intended to serve them next but somehow you're still getting shit for it. I do not miss that!

It does mean the queue appears far longer than it actually is at first glance though, and I agree that it's probably a hangover (no pun intended!) from covid where you had to queue differently.

Surely you look before you get in the queue to see what system is being used in the place you are?
