Why is everyone hating on London

Recently a lot posts I read on social media is about how much people hate London. Its has been called all sorts of names - cesspit, dirty, crime ridden and the foreigners have taken over. They don't recognise London anymore and they are glad they have moved to whiter areas with cheaper housing.

For context, I have lived here all my life, lived in North West London and now live in Southwest London. I admit there are parts of London that have deteriorated, equally there part parts of London that are really nice. Yes it is expensive to live in and properties are expensive but that does not make it a cesspit.

I love living where I am and I love all that London has to offer. I'm not English but I am British and I'm not white and I feel really safe here in London. Yes there are problems with crime, but there is crime everywhere.

I have been to other areas in the UK and really none of it appeals to me, I have been to beautiful country side and small towns and cities and tbh I would get bored after two days there. But I would never go as far as insulting it which people seem to do quite a lot with London.

I think Farage/ Reform and Tommy have a lot to answer for.

The thread is about the particular SM R Wing thing that is going on at the moment. Not about people whose personal preference is to live / visit elsewhere.

The Far Right are anti the Muslim / Labour mayor and desperate to prove that London is a desperate lawless no/go zone full of feral migrants.

As it happens crime has fallen over the last year, and in multi cultural cosmopolitan London , which houses more migrants / refugees per head of population than anywhere else, the community here is NOT staging riots and setting fire to accommodation hostels / hotels.

But Reform want Londoners to believe that we are under threat so are yelling ‘cess pit’ on repeat.

That’s what the OP was referencing, I think.

I was commenting on the fact that she kept trying to argue with people when they gave their reasons for not liking London. Like they were going to decide to change their minds based off what she had said 🤔😅

where are people seeing this all? I have only seen the cesspit comments on Daily Mail (yes I know I shouldn't go on there!)

InOverMyHead84 · 15/08/2025 22:57

I speak as I am and open to critique.

London is a foreign country to me. Overcrowded and not representative of my day to day life. I go there as a one off here and there and take it's ways as a curiosity.

It does not feel like the UK to me. It governs us, but is different to us.

Maybe that explains Brexit.

It doesn’t feel like it did 30 years ago.
The buildings and landmarks do, but the lack of cockney local accent is really disappointing and astounding.
I imagine tourists think the same. Perhaps not what they were expecting.
Immigrants sleeping in tents in parks?
Romanian looking beggars on every corner.
Those horrible American sweet shops which are a front for money laundering.
I don’t recognise the place so won’t be going back. I imagine the people who live there abd like it don’t want me back. Fair enough.
I’ll stay rural up North where things haven’t changed as much.

I find this a really odd thing to say.

What does the UK feel like, then? Like Cornwall or like Birmingham? Like Milton Keynes or the Isle of Mull? Like Shrewsbury or Swindon or Stirling? Because they all feel as different from each other as any of them do to London.

I worry that when you say "a foreign country", you are talking about London's many ethnicities. Is that what you mean? And why does this trouble you?

"Romanian looking beggars." FFS.

So where are those women from then? They’re certainly not British.

I love London and have worked in London for over 30 years, enjoy the buzz, my kids love it and we have some great days out. However the demographic has changed so much and while all types of people do rub along together the major has made it very clear that London is no longer for 'white families'.

Was so upset when this was in the press last year as I really feel that all demographics should be represented.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/sadiq-khan-white-family-official-website-b2396431.html

Are you able to read?

Did you read the article?

Did you read the bit that says: Mr Khan said the caption was added by a staff member “in error”, and does not reflect his view or the view of the GLA.?

Are you repeating this on purpose or through ignorance?

Wolfpinkola · 15/08/2025 23:18

Islamophobia and ignorance.
Also, there’s a general feeling of resentment maybe as the rich / poor gap gets bigger. Many cities have high unemployment and not very good prospects even just 2 hours away from London but young people are put off by the high rent, not realising the bigger picture which is sad

MasterBeth · 15/08/2025 23:20

Jamesblonde2 · 15/08/2025 23:15

I don't know. You tell me.
You are the one labelling them as "Romanian -looking."
Maybe you could be a bit more accurate before you start throwing your nationalistic slurs around.

Wolfpinkola · 15/08/2025 23:25

@Jamesblonde2 nowhere feels like it did 30 years ago. Accents change and evolve, populations move, the centre of London arguably is is no longer the west end, I would say all the interesting stuff is East now.

Pleased to say we’re the same as we always were and welcome tourists who know what they’re going to get. Traditional. It’s great.

No Roma beggars.

VivienneDelacroix · 15/08/2025 23:35

Right-wing American press are really laying it on that London is some horrific, unsafe, dystopia. It feeds the concept that American is the land of the free and that America is the greatest nation. It's getting a bit North Korea - pushing the idea that anywhere outside the fatherland is inferior.

But beggars in general are ok? And roma tourists?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 15/08/2025 23:45

I've lived and worked in London for 22 years after moving here for uni from the small south coast town I grew up in. I've been physically assaulted in the street several times in one of those places over the years. It wasn't London.

You can’t hate “on” something, you just hate it.

😂
Or hatred of...

Mariana95 · 15/08/2025 23:50

noblegiraffe · 15/08/2025 15:06

It’s because the mayor is a Muslim and they hate Muslims.

They refer to it as ‘Sadiq Khan’s London’ when they want to be particularly scathing.

Those are just the racists.

There are some people who just don't like London because it's busy, impersonal, polluted and there are a lot of rundown areas once you're outside of the EC and W postcodes.

I don't live in London, but happily live in a really diverse area.

Mariana95 · 15/08/2025 23:53

Lmnop22 · 15/08/2025 15:09

Honestly I think London is over rated and I don’t really understand why anyone would spend so much more money just to live there. But I haven’t noticed a social media trend against London and my reluctance to live there isn’t due to racial or crime factors - just expense, huge travel times between places, not being close to more rural areas etc which are just personal preference.

If you like London, crack on!

I agree. Not everyone who dislikes London does so for racist reasons.

noblegiraffe · 15/08/2025 23:55

Yes, but are they currently waging an anti-London campaign on social media?

echt · 15/08/2025 23:57

Uh huh. Well "rural up north" is the only place I've ever personally experienced racism. But then your "Roma looking beggars" comment sort of proves the point there.
