On holiday in Crete and it’s all been a bit of a nightmare so far. Less than 20 minutes after leaving the airport, I had an accident in the car hire vehicle swerving to avoid an oncoming scooter. It ended up in the vehicle needing to be recovered and a €140 taxi journey to our accommodation 90 minutes away. We arrived at 4am and were scrabbling around on the mountain in the dark trying to find the right villa. We almost let ourselves into another villa until we noticed the drying swimsuits outside.

I’m on day 3 of the 10 day holiday, and it’s apparent we won’t be able to stay here without a car. It’s a 40 minute walk up the mountain away from the town. We did a taxi trip on the first morning for groceries, but the taxi had no seatbelts. I felt awful for allowing my 12 year old son to ride without a seatbelt but felt I had little other options at the time.

The car hire company aren’t being very responsive. I’ve got a police accident and other paperwork, ready to start their accident process but so far, have not had the promised call back from the ‘manager’. I’d need to give them another €1500 damage deposit and travel back to their offices 90 minutes away to collect a replacement vehicle. I’m reluctant to authorise any more charges to my card until I know the extent of the original liability. I took out indemnity insurance separately but I’ll need to pay any cost up front. I emailed my insurer yesterday to start the paper trail.

The accommodation hosts haven’t been very helpful and just sent links to car hire companies. I haven’t seen them or heard from the at all in person. AirBnB have been better and are offering to cancel and refund unused nights. I’m checking if they can book a property that has availability now.

As it’s just me and my 12 year old, I’m struggling to keep it together. I feel isolated in the mountains without a car and I’m worried about the liability from the accident.

Congrats on getting the damage waiver separately, I have had to claim on this in the past and was well worth it. Enjoy the rest of your holiday in Chania! It’s all good experience for the future and you’ve handled yourself brilliantly. See it as proof you can deal with setbacks rather than a holiday disaster.

You are on a Greek island, there are car hires every few hundred yards and most of these don’t take a huge deposit. They aren’t like the big hire companies. Have you been into one to see what they’d charge?

We never ever use the big companies when in Greece, the little companies are a million times better and usually don’t put massive holds on your credit card.

I hope you have a fab last few days of your holiday, I think a hotel is a good idea.

I’m just about to head off for a hotel and try to salvage the last few days. It also looks likes the owner won’t lose out as the cleaner is here doing a turn around for new guests. I think it may even work out better for them as I booked midweek to midweek leading some straggling days over the weekend. I think they’ve now managed to book a full week.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I assumed a lot based on last year’s experience which in hindsight I’d make sure to book a ‘superhost’/concierge package in future. Hopefully the insurance and Airbnb refunds will kick in after I’m home so I’m not too out of pocket!

Good tgat they havent lost financially.

Superhost doesnt mean what you think it does. It just means your review score is over 4.8, your response rate is over 90% and you have hosted more than 10 stays.

What you need to be looking for is 'private host' ie an individial as opposed to a 'business host'.

That's a happy update! Have a fabulous time at your hotel and enjoy the rest of your holiday. Agree with above advice re. superhost - the Rhodes experience you had isn't really a box to be ticked on Airbnb as the vast majority just rent the properties and at most would leave you some biscuits, not get involved (and indeed most guests wouldn't want the hosts being that involved). But anyway, glad you've sorted it for now!

Why the interrogation. You have been rude in your responses to the op - obviously a budget holiday/ why didn’t you do this/ should have done that/ you selected flights at an inappropriate time…
Do you believe this is in any way helpful to the op’s current situation?
Op had an accident in the car, it happens and she is posting for advice not a detailed analysis of every single thing she has (in your opinion) done wrong!

Couldn’t agree more . Poor OP , trying to have a holiday with her son . Sounds like she spent a lot of money .
Is on her own ( no other adult ) and has had an accident in a different country and a few people are just being plain nasty !!!
OP I think you sound brilliant and are doing your very best . Crete is stunning , Chania particularly so .
I really hope you can work something out to enjoy the rest of what should be a break ❤️!

Just as well I didn’t hire another car. Car hire company have come back with an initial damage cost of over €4,000!!! Obviously I have gone back and asked for a break down of costs against terms and exclusions, and given a heads up to my credit card company to prevent any unauthorised charges.
