To feel a bit sick(ened) when hearing about certain subjects?

Title shamelessly inspired by another thread. Is there anything you see or hear, eg on the News, that has you reaching for the off button lightning quick?

Mine is the frigging Post Office Scandal. Still being done to death. Just turned off Woman's Hour when Anita Rani started bleating on about it. Sick of hearing about it over and over again.

I have another one but would probably be run out of town for mentioning it.

It sounds like you're actually watching the news as background TV or something?

Good grief. Don't do that. That's just mad.

put some music on or something.

I don't watch news and I haven't heard of this Kevin chap.

TBH I thought the other thread was rather poor taste, and I think this one is in very poor taste bordering on pretty disgusting. If you don't want to see or hear about something, there is an off switch. Being sick of hearing about the suffering of other people says an awful lot about you, and none of it is good.

Yes, I know how important it is. Am genuinely interested in any breaking news / updates but when it is yet another half or whole hour of the actual news being replaced by more of the same I just roll my eyeballs and turn off. I am not a heartless cow.

But the other one will make it seem like I am. It is a lot more niche but is the constant wheeling out of the 'heroic friend' Kevin Sinfield (re Rob Burrow / MND), doing Good Things. And the calls for him to be canonised or similar 🙂
I think it is to do with the sickening reverence for / fawning over someone who is making something very important all about THEM. I know that research into MND is crucially important, and the effects of it are devastating but as soon as I hear the name Kevin Sinfield I cannot get to the remote fast enough to switch it off. And I know I am probably the only person alive who finds him a bit of a grifter.
That subject could be a bit more of a northern / regional obsession, tbh.

😮😮😮😮

are you quite right in the head, OP?

a bit of a grifter? Jeez. I pity you and your outlook on life

I don't watch or read the news at all, because I have a severe anxiety disorder and mild depression. I literally wouldn't be able to get through life if I was watching the news, I don't think. My psychiatrist agrees that I shouldn't watch it

Just throwing that out there for the poster who can't understand why I "turn a blind eye" etc

I think that is perfectly fine. But you aren't starting threads inviting ungracious comments about people and things that do matter to many people. The OP did. Being "sick to death" of hearing about the Post Office scandal - something which led to people literally dying, others imprisoned falsely, being financially ruined etc., etc is just nastiness. And having a go at someone who has raised £millions for research into the disease that killed his friend... words fail me at how nasty that is.

Avoiding news may help some people, but they don't hen go off an make nasty comments about what they haven't heard on it!

’Loose Women’ has to be turned off!!

TheLivelyViper · 15/08/2025 09:16

I understand the news isn't fun or happy most of the time and I'm quite different I love the news and political commentary but I know that's not the norm and I don't expect everyone to listen and watch to as much as I do from all over the world. However there is always a privilege in being able to completely switch off from the news because the news is proper reality tv, and it's not edited, people are living that and they cannot switch off, so I think it's important to at least stay informed in whatever way suits you without obviously saying you need to constantly subject yourself to horrible broadcasts but information and knowledge is power and we cannot help or advocate for others when we don't know what's happening. I don't think stories make me sickened other than when people have experienced horrible things e.g the recent Massacre in Sudan in a refugee camp or when there's horrible crimes etc. The horizon scandal only starter to be cared about my the public through the ITV drama Mr Bates, which is amazing for showing how different mediums can have an impact but also sad that it took so long and we can see the impact of public interest in them getting more results thought sadly it led to some suicides and also some died before they got justice, so if only people had listened and gained awareness earlier.

This is a good idea!! Everything on the news depresses me.

No- I still want to know what’s going on with the biggest miscarriage of justice in British history. Where no one has been compensated or gone to prison. Why wouldn’t I?

This.

And I am sickened by your use of ‘bleating on’ in this context, OP.

I was thinking about this thread and have slightly changed my mind, I am sickened by seeing Putin being so respected and also getting a flypast when other Presidents don't even get that, and his wave and snigger at questions around killing civilians, and I'm also sickened by the miscarriage as mentioned above.

Orangina had to show some defference to his boss.
Red carpet,fly past.

LlynTegid · 16/08/2025 09:04

There are occasions when I will not watch the news because of distressing content but not because something has been talked about again. As for the Post Office scandal, I will be happy to hear no more of it once those responsible are serving prison sentences.
