AIBU to expect car dealership to honour what was negotiated in sale?

We bought a used car from a Renault dealership two weeks ago. Prior to going through with the purchase, I negotiated an additional 12-month warranty. I confirmed this both over the phone prior to picking up the car, and on the day we picked up the car.

A few days after paying and driving off with the car, the sales person has said that there was some there was some miscommunication with his manager about this and it was meant to be either have an additional 12-month warranty OR £200 off, not both. The sales person acknowledged his error, but say that they won't honour the additional 12-warranty and if I'm not happy, then I can return the car, which I do not wish to do. I sent a senior manager an email explaining the situation a week ago, but haven't even had a reply.

How can I get the dealership to honour what was promised in the negotiation? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! 🙂

Is the agreement written down anywhere?

Anything in writing?

In the immortal words of Sam Goldwyn " A verbal agreement ain't worth the paper it's written on!". If you have nothing on paper or by email, I doubt you'll get anywhere with this, they'll just say you misheard or misunderstood.

This. Did you get a written signed purchase contract, if it's in that then I would think they have to honour it, if it was a discussion that never got into the contract probably not, they might if you push for, but if he says it was a misunderstanding and you were offered this or that and you say you were promised both it's tricky.

They will not want you to return the car, it will now have an additional ‘previous owner’ so will be harder to sell for the price.

I would call their bluff and say that you are happy to return the car and purchase one from a dealership that stands by their promises. I’d then expect them to quickly cave and give what you are asking for.

Sadly, nothing written down. I did ask for them to email me over everything that was agreed, prior to the sale, but I never received it. I should have checked, but we were meant to be exchanging contracts on a house the same day we picked up the car (bad timing, but our other car had broken down and we needed a new car!) and I was rather stressed, as things were going wrong with exchanging contracts, which didn't go through and still hasn't, but that's another story!

If there's nothing written down there's very little you can do unfortunately. It's such awful behaviour by the dealership - really common these days.
