I mean, who the hell brings a baby to a tennis match that may last hours in 30 degrees plus temperatures?

YANBU.

there are places you just don’t bring young children.

EasternStandard · 14/08/2025 07:55

Yanbu it would be distracting

Agix · 14/08/2025 07:57

I complete agreement. There should not be crying babies, screaming children or adults in the audience.

Why even take the poor baby there? It's very selfish, not considering the babies needs nor the experience of the other people at the match (including the players) , just because whoever the child's guardian was on the day wanted to watch tennis.

I don't understand how people can sit there with a crying baby, in situations where a crying baby is not appropriate, and think "it's fine for me to just let this happen". Yeah, babies cry, doesn't mean they have to cry there. Take them away.

DeedlessIndeed · 14/08/2025 07:58

Bad umpiring IMO. Should have done her job properly and asked for baby to be taken out well before this stage.

CoraPirbright · 14/08/2025 08:01

Absolutely agree OP. And she was doing v well in the match before the distraction became too much which is a shame. Imagine being sat next to the screaming baby too when you had probably paid a bit for tickets and were really looking forward to it. There really is a time and a place and this is not it.

CagneyNYPD1 · 14/08/2025 08:02

I’m not Emma’s biggest fan but she was spot on with this. I’ve been lucky enough to go to Wimbledon many times and I’ve never seen very young children there. A well behaved 6 year old who is able to sit quietly and watch. But not a baby/toddler/ “spirited” young children.

It’s tennis, not football or rugby where noise is encouraged during play.

Yes, and the umpire made Raducanu look like the villain by saying do you want the child thrown out, it’s only a child. So unprofessional.

And yes, the umpire should have intervened. It shouldn’t take a player to complain.

OhDorWheresthesalad · 14/08/2025 08:03

Yanbu. Although i find her REALLY irritating also. She's very whiny.

SummaLuvin · 14/08/2025 08:03

at Wimbledon didn't someone get reprimanded for opening champagne too loudly? crying babies are far louder, far more distracting, and go on for far longer

SatsumaDog · 14/08/2025 08:04

I agree. It’s no place for a baby and the umpire should have requested the were
removed when they first started to cry.

GenieGenealogy · 14/08/2025 08:05

Poor players.

"It’s a child,” the umpire responded incredulously. “Do you want me to send the child out of the stadium?”

Yes. Yes that is EXACTLY what you do in a situation where the adult with the baby is too entitled to make that decision themselves.

Dangermoo · 14/08/2025 08:05

I don't like the way the umpire tried to shame her, in front of the crowd.

TheNightingalesStarling · 14/08/2025 08:10

If thestres can have a lower age limit, so can sports venues.

A limit of at least 5 would be fine for a tennis tournament.

LifeOfAShowGirl · 14/08/2025 08:11

The baby and parents should’ve been removed.

Yep. Talk about interrupting the flow of a player.

It looks like the crowd said yes too which was good.

KimberleyClark · 14/08/2025 08:17

Would whoever voted YABU care to elaborate on their reasons?

The lower limit for tennis should be at least 8 yrs old, there's no way I'd take my 5 yr old nephew. He can't sit still and is prone to talking all the way through films & pantos.

harriethoyle · 14/08/2025 08:22

I don’t take to Emma Radacanu but I think she was totally justified. And shame on the umpire for being so unpleasant about it.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 14/08/2025 08:22

The umpire was a coward, making her make the decision.

The parents were idiots.

Daleksatemyshed · 14/08/2025 08:25

Wimbledon let children under 5 in but you can't take them to the show courts like centre court where the top seeds play. I'm amazed anyone thinks it's a reasonable idea for a baby to sit in that heat for ages

HerecomesMargo · 14/08/2025 08:26

The parents are absolute C** for doing this. Spoiling it for everyone else too! entitled pricks.

I read of a singer recently calling out a mother for bringing her 1yo to a concert. He humiliated her and I applaud him. You have shit for brains if you think bringing a poor baby to a loud and overwhelming concert was a good idea.

Enko · 14/08/2025 08:26

The parent was unreasonable. If you had to take. A baby the moment they begin to cry you remove them from the area of silent.

This appears to have become less commonly known in later years.

LucyMonth · 14/08/2025 08:27

The baby shouldn’t have been there. They also shouldn’t be at concerts wearing ear defenders either.

However I don’t feel particularly sorry for Emma. It was no more of an annoyance/distraction for her than her competitor. They were both competing under the same circumstances and therefore it was fair.

Lucyintheskywithdiamonnds · 14/08/2025 08:28

YADNBU. Poor Emma and poor baby too. Idiotic parents. So many of them.
