Help with my stop tap!

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 13:29

I’ve just moved into my house

This is my cold water stop tap, I can’t turn it and have no cold water downstairs in my tap

Does this look right to you? My ex partner used to deal with this and I’ve just moved in on my own.

Any ideas?

I have cold water upstairs but not downstairs!

That doesn't look like the stop tap, it looks like a washing machine or dishwasher connection point

Try asking the MNer PigletJohn.

There’s 2 of them. One behind my washer and one under the sink. Both are in the down position and don’t seem to turn properly

that doesn't look like any stop tap I've seen. Some are like actual T shaped taps and some are levers, but bigger than that.
Have a feel behind any pipes to see if its hiding.

Not convinced that’s a stop cock. If it was a stop cock issue you’d have no water, upstairs or down. Can you ask a neighbour with a similar property? Or go back to the people you bought/rent from?

Superhansrantowindsor · 13/08/2025 14:06

Stop tap is normally the one under the sink. Mine looks bigger than that. If you have cold upstairs but down down that could suggest more than one tap.

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 14:10

Apparently they’re shut off valves. I have hot water just not cold

Stop taps are checked. Sorry that’s me being stupid

This is not a stop cock-it’s for a washing machine. Your stopcock might be outside on the pavement.

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 14:15

On the leaflet I’ve got it states stop tap behind the washer? I’m so confused

OP posts:
Thelondonone · 13/08/2025 14:16

It might be the one with red string attached.

Thelondonone · 13/08/2025 14:18

Are you turning it the right way? Lefty loosy, righty tighty?

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 14:19

I’ve not tried to turn the blue one yet. But the other ones seem to be in the right position or do they?

OP posts:
zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 14:41

I’ve had a mess with the ones behind my washer and turned the blue thing to on
There’s one under the sink that’s off but won’t turn as it’s for a dishwasher

I’ve got water for the hose pipe but nothing else

Betheadore · 13/08/2025 14:47

I'd be wondering why it was turned off, op. I think you need to ask the estate agent to check or contact the sellers if you can.

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 15:26

the stop tap has completely snapped, turns out it was broken

can I turn the little screw anti clockwise or will it come out and cause a leak

OP posts:
zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 17:45

I’ve fixed it!

turns out the issue was under the sink

OP posts:
GeneralSettings · 13/08/2025 18:11

How did you fix it, @zebraprintxmasdinner ?

zebraprintxmasdinner · 13/08/2025 18:45

It was a cold water isolator that hadn’t been turned on

In your photo showing the two taps the lower brass one looks like your stop tap. The second blue one looks like it is a tee off from the main feed....this is quite possibly your upstairs feed and it does look like someone has used an appliance tap which is poor plumbing.

You need to turn the blue tap on so that the lever is flush with the pipe. If it is seized you will probably need help...you can try a squirt of WD40 or similar on it and leave for 10 mins then use a dishcloth to get a firm grip of it and try some brute force...

Occasionally the plastic handle breaks off but you can't do any major damage by using a bit of force on it...
