To ask what helps your migraines?!

Since I had my second child 2 years ago I've been getting migraines on average 3 times a month. I get awful nausea and vomiting every time. I haven't pinpointed a cause but it's probably stress related. I have a busy life and a child with autism whose behaviour can be difficult, 'managing stress' isn't really an option.

Please tell me any miracle migraine cures you've found that actually have worked for you to lessen a migraine once it's started or prevented them!

Sometimes, a sugary Coke and some ready salted crisps will help (only time I have them), along with lying down in a dark room and diffusing some lavender oil, if it's a "mild" attack. Otherwise, nothing much. None of the triptans I've tried so far have helped, so I'm on the waiting list to see a neurologist.

jinn2025 · 12/08/2025 14:34

Tiger Balm the white one, smear it all over your forehead and lie in a dark room.

LiamNeesonIsADerryGirl · 12/08/2025 14:41

Changing from the combined pill to the mini pill helped with the severity of mine but I've now been prescribed sumatriptan from the GP. Migraleave pink and yellow tablets and kool n soothe forehead patches are also helpful.
Edited to add, my mum used to also suffer migraines many years ago and had a course of acupuncture - she hasn't had one since. It's something that I'm looking into for myself.

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/08/2025 14:41

Tiger balm.

Coke - for me it doesn’t matter if it’s sugary or not, I think it’s the caffeine that helps (I don’t like coffee)

You can buy buccastem from the pharmacist - it stops vomiting from migraines. You don’t need a prescription but need to speak to the pharmacist, or order from an online one where you fill in details. I think you might have to confirm you’ve been diagnosed with migraines before they give it, I can’t remember. It works quickly for me, but can make you drowsy though.

Sal17690 · 12/08/2025 14:48

A triptan - on prescription but perhaps over the counter in the uk? Taken as soon as possible. A can of fat coke and something salty to eat once the nausea passes. And try to sleep.

farewellperformance · 12/08/2025 14:51

I take co-codamol and an anti sickness tablet (buccastem) at the first sign of headache and then go to sleep (if possible). If I don't take them in time and start being sick, there's nothing I can do but lie in a dark room for the day.

Rosegoldy · 12/08/2025 14:53

Sticking your feet into the hotest basic of water helps to relieve the pressure.
A can of coke sipped for sure and your migraine painkillers asap.
There are gel cooling hats that we keep in the fridge.
They block out all light and definitely give relief.
I bought them for a couple of pounds online. Brilliant.

FancyCatSlave · 12/08/2025 14:54

Propranolol - stops me getting my stress related migraines.

FJS819 · 12/08/2025 14:54

Sumatriptan with 2 paracetamol. Then a dark room and try to sleep. Sometimes works after an hour or two.

Propranolol - stops me getting my stress related migraines.

Yes, my friend was getting multiple migraines a week, she's tried avoiding different foods and all sorts. Spoke to her GP and was given triptans to try as a treatment but they didn't do much. She's now on propranolol as a preventive and it's cut them right down.

You shouldn't have to just learn to cope with migraines if they're really impacting your life. Talk to your GP about trailing different meds and see what works for you.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/08/2025 14:57

I’ve just been put on amitriptyline for my migraines. No real sign as yet whether it will help or not, crossing my fingers.

lemondropsandchimneytops · 12/08/2025 15:00

Hands in as hot a bowl of water as you can bear as soon as you start to feel it coming. And cocodamol

ChocHotolate · 12/08/2025 15:00

Ok, I’ve had migraines for almost 40yrs. After a LOT of trial and error I have achieved the most control ever with:
💊Pizotifen 1.5mg once a day
💊Dolovent vitamins 2 capsules twice a day (turns my urine bright yellow)
💊 Feverfew capsule twice a day
💊 Rizatraptan, migraleve and sleep at first sign of migraine

This regime has reduced my migraines from once a week to once every couple of months. Once it starts though, I’m pretty much useless for 24hrs

Phoenixdust · 12/08/2025 15:02

Find out what your triggers are mine are orange juice and chocolate . I also know as soon as I start feeling sick the headache will go to a migraine so I take paracetamol but if it does go to a migraine I take Rizatriptan bearing in mind I also take Topiramate every day too to prevent migraines heat works for me on my forehead like a wheat bag and pressure like my hand or just an eye mask you can get eye masks you can warm up in the microwave one of those with a wheat bag on your neck is bliss ! In a dark room and silence and lots of fluids xx

I've just got a prescription for amitriptyline for a compressed nerve in my neck, drug snap! 😂

Philandbill · 12/08/2025 15:03

Lots of sympathy OP, migraine is awful. Mine seemed to be hormone related. Plenty of water and painkillers as soon as I felt one starting. I also had to lie down in a darkened room and close my eyes. If I could sleep the worst would be gone when I woke up. Perhaps go to your GP and keep going until you find a medication that helps.

TeenLifeMum · 12/08/2025 15:05

Pink migraleave tablets. Mine are triggered by sudden weather changes so I find that any sign of headache or mild nausea ( usually how mine start but not always) I take a pink pill and then move to yellow and I can continue with my day. I’m a barometer basically. If I leave it too late I’ll be sick and need a dark room. Sometimes I miss the signs but if I think it’s a bug, but I fancy a cup of tea, that means migraine.

ratspeaker · 12/08/2025 15:06

Soluable paracetamol ( preferably with caffeine in) mixed with a rehydration sachet

Tastes awful but it works for me

constantlylactating · 12/08/2025 15:06

Full fat coke, ready salted crisps, being in a darkened room with a cold flannel on the back of my neck

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 12/08/2025 15:07

Ginger Ale works wonders for nausea.

FraggleMountain · 12/08/2025 15:12

I feel sick with my migraines just like you do, and for me it was wonderful to discover Zomig nasal spray. It really works, I can feel confident that I’ll be able to carry on though busy meetings or stressful situations even with a migraine looming. Just remember to keep them in the fridge, or at least below 20 degrees or they go off (I discovered this the hard way, and lost a week of holiday to languishing in a dark room).

AnnaMagnani · 12/08/2025 15:13

Three times a month is getting close to it being worth on a preventer medication. Especially if each of those three times lasts longer than a day.

There are loads of triggers for migraine and some are very amenable to lifestyle measures and some you can't do a lot about. Some of the commonest are:

Having different amounts of caffeine in a day
Alcohol
Not getting up at the same time every day
Not going to bed at the same time every day
Being hungry and not having regular meals
Screens - install a blue light filter
Hormones- minipill was a lifechanger for me but obvs is a personal choice to try

Those are probably the easiest to change, although depending on your job and the presence of small children it can be difficult! Basically migraine prefers you to have a boring steady life with no late nights or lie ins.

Triggers you can't do much about:
The weather - especially storms and high pressure
Stress - unless you do some radical life changes
Relaxation - I find this particularly mean but it's a classic migraine on the first day of the weekend or a holiday

augustusglupe · 12/08/2025 15:14

2 Migraleve Pink, some iced water and sleep. Then a few cups of Tea & Yellow migraleve 4 hours later if it’s lingering.
I say iced water because room temp makes me feel more sick and my migraines usually start with me either feeling or being sick.
Later on I keep food very plain and light. Toast or Soup.

menopausalfart · 12/08/2025 15:15

I've had hormonal migraines since I was a teen. Only thing that works for me is Sumatriptan,
