If you lost weight, how did you do it?

Just looking for tips. Since being prescribed Mirtazapine (I’ve been on this for over a year.) I’ve noticed that I’ve put on weight and my clothes don’t fit me anymore.

I’m 29 and I’m 5ft 2, but I don’t know how much I weigh as I haven’t got scales in the house. I’ve made an appointment with my GP to ask for a medication change as Mirtazapine makes me hungry all of the time, which isn’t helping.

Does anyone have any tips for me in order to lose some weight please?

I don’t drink alcohol or fizzy drinks at all. My issue is my constant stacking.

Cutting out UPFs.
Reducing carbs - bread, cereals, pasta, rice, potato.
Eating very little sugar.
Eating fermented foods.
Small salad before dinner every night.
Smaller amounts of meat, more veg.
Staying hydrated.

If you are finding you are not noticing hunger cues then have some really set meals so you don’t get ravenous and get cravings. So have a breakfast that’s really easy to prep, Greek yoghurt with raspberries and oats, omelette with spinach and tomatoes, cottage cheese with ryvita, apples and seeds, that sort of thing. Lunch again, fibre and protein rich and really easy - chicken salad, boiled eggs salad, chicken skewers, roasted veg and cous cous. Plan your meals and make sure you eat proper whole foods. If you crave carbs choose complex, whole carbs and pair it with some protein.

3.5 stone on Slimming World. Have kept it off now for two years..

theysayimthespitofyou · 13/08/2025 15:14

I came to realise that you don’t HAVE to eat sweet foods at all - just literally stop eating them. After a few weeks I lost any interest in sugar / puddings and haven’t eaten one in over a year - I lost a stone that way and have kept it off. I had a notoriously sweet tooth prior to that and ate chocolate/ biscuits/ cake daily totally out of habit - you don’t need them, they add nothing to your diet except calories.
All gone and I’ve never felt better!

I was prescribed mirtazapine a few years back and it made me so ravenously hungry no amount of will power could prevent me from eating. If it is an option to switch to another medication, you may find the weight comes off by itself.

I was starting to think it was just me who got ravenous on Mirtazapine. I’ll update the thread once my GP and I decide on an alternative 🤞🏽

Just an update. I haven’t put on a great deal of weight, but I think it really shows on me due to my height, unfortunately.

I was a size 10 prior to being prescribed Mirtazapine. I’m now a 12 and sometimes a 14.

My GP has one of those scales, which calculates BMI, so I’ll use that when I attend my appointment in two weeks time.

My issue is that I don’t just feel hunger, I get ravenous and sometimes carbs will only do. I’ve been obsessed with food since being prescribed Mirtazapine, so I really needs that prescription changed.

I get this at certain stage of sicknesses.
Absolutely ravenous. Could eat battered deep fried horse (i don't even really like deep fried food...). It's absolute hunger and nothing is enough. My usual food does not cut it.

Can you do fibre supplements? I found that bit of psyllium husk before meal helps curbing this. To an extent

Cloudymonday · 13/08/2025 16:42

I just realised that these supplemnts may affect absorption of medicine so don't go into it blindly if you do

Calorie counting. Lost 16 stone and kept it off.

I’ve lost 7 stone. You have my total respect. Awesome job.

Darkling1 · 21/10/2025 15:58

Update: My Dr has prescribed me a different medication (Duloxetine) and I’ve noticed I’m eating less, so that’s good.

I’ve purchased weighing scales and I currently weigh 11st 7lbs, which has upset me a great deal. I’m 5ft 2, so I really need to shift this extra weight!

Only two meals a day, brunch/lunch and dinner. No cake, sweets , chocolate, biscuits, crisps except for special occasions, cut down on bread, and smaller portions for meals. If I needed to snack fruit or veg only..
When I plucked up enough confidence to get on the scales I realise I was officially obese so had to do something about it. Once I make the decision it was easy to carry on.

i was 12 stone and managed to loose 3 stone in about 6 months.
I was a snacker and ate huge portions.
I have 2 meals a day dinner and tea.
I cut out takeaways and eating out for awhile, now I have about 1 a month.
cut my portions sizes by half and stopped eating when I was full.
i snack on grapes, strawberries with a sprinkle of sugar and apples.
I don’t drink alcohol but I drink no sugar fizzy pop as a treat.
i hate the gym but I have a toddler and a 3 floor house to clean daily so I try get 10,000 steps her day.
I don’t deprive myself I try to think if I am having a dessert after tea I’ll have a light meal

Sounds brilliant. Does this mean no drinks after 7 pm / no calories? I love a glass of wine x1 in the evening so am wondering about this …

JBJ · 21/10/2025 16:30

Mounjaro, but I’m making sure I count calories too - 1300 a day (as per Nutracheck’s recommendation), 30g of fibre and 100g of protein. Hoping I can cement good habits for when I come off the MJ

Here’s my BMI.

Mine is 29.2. I started out at at about 34. It's been a slow process for me, but it's worthwhile. I've been building muscle as I've been losing weight.

Depends on how much you want to lose the weight. If you are determined and want to lose it faster you have to be more strict. When I was losing weight I drank very little alcohol. I'm now maintaining my weight so I drink alcohol when I want to. Much the same with the other things. I eat more sourdough bread than I used to. If not consuming alcohol I don't drink anything apart from water or tea without sugar or milk after 7pm. I will be stricter on the few days after I have been more relaxed with my food. Works for me.
