To not want neighbours cats in my garden?

Rainbow3210 · 11/08/2025 14:46

Our neighbour has cats and they keep coming into our garden. They have also made their way into our house several times through the window and back door. I’m currently pregnant and have two young children. The children get upset when they come in as they don’t understand why they come and go (they want them to stay to play with). We have a lot of songbirds birds that sit in a bush in our garden and the cats are constantly trying to hunt the birds.

The cats are also doing the toilet in the garden which my husband has to clean with a hose. I believe it’s not entirely safe to clean up cat mess when pregnant.

I spoke to the neighbour and asked if they could stop the cats coming into my house and garden. They said there is nothing that can be done.

Is it unreasonable that this is bothering me?

But they're wild animals that's is fine and to be expected. We are talking about peopel who let their domestic pets wander about all over, crapping in neighbour's gardens. It isn't ok.

I've just had to stop and let a very frail looking cat walk slowly across the road. I didn't mind waiting but what on earth are the owners thinking letting a cat out in such a state. Felt sorry for it, bet it'll get knocked over it didn't seem to have any road sense and looked ancient.

Foxes poo in people’s gardens
Is foxes poo OK

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 15:46

@DrPrunesqualer foxes are wild so they can poo wherever they want . Cats have owners who should be responsible for them . Same goes for any other wild animal / bird .

People are mainly angry about poo in the garden though

So I’m asking is fox poo OK.

Im not personally an expert in what species the poos in our garden comes from. Except for rabbit poo which is quite distinctive.

I don’t have cameras to find the culprits

We are rural with a lot of wildlife though
Poo is just poo imo. I just clear it up

I'm an animal. I have a right to roam. Can I poo in your garden?

Or is it actually NOT the same when domestic creatures come n do it?

They can't help it. They don't have owners with a litter tray.

I think there’s a law against humans doing it. Something to do with exposure. Remember Covid

That’s not what I’m asking though.

Im asking
Poo is Poo and some people on here gav an issue with poo. I’m thinking poster upthread who spends hours in their garden etc. and doesnt want poo in it.

So
Is the issue that it’s certain poos that are OK and people are fine with clearing it up
Or Is the issue really that some people just hate cats

'So Is the issue that it’s certain poos that are OK and people are fine with clearing it up Or Is the issue really that some people just hate cats'

I like cats.

The issue is not poo per se, for example I pick up my dogs poo but I would not pick up other people's dog poo.

The issue is when people let their pets roam and poo in other people's gardens.

Again. What about foxes and rabbits and rats tho. Someone’s got to pick that up. I do but they aren’t my pets
I just get on and do it.
No one can stop cats roaming because it’s not in their nature. Dogs have to be kept under control and on leads because some are dangerous. That’s why they can’t roam around, it’s not to do with their poo it’s to do with keeping people safe

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 17:33

@DrPrunesqualer let me explain - none of us want to pick up poo that is in our garden that doesn’t belong to our own personal pets that we have chosen to get and look after . With actual native wildlife we pick up the poo because they don’t have an owner to keep them away from my property .With the local cats , most of us that object to the poo / killing etc would like the owners to keep the cats on their property as they are the ones that chose to get the pet . WRT dogs , there is a law that says you have to pick up poo it’s nothing to do with keeping people safe or dangerous dogs they are different laws .

So it’s just to do with other people’s pets then @tinyspiny
Poo in general and picking it up from your garden isn’t the issue as long as it’s not from someone else’s cat.

Now
How can you distinguish poos 🕵️

tinyspiny · 12/08/2025 18:24

@DrPrunesqualer You can easily tell the difference between fox poo and cat poo particularly if you’ve owned a terrier that thinks rolling in fox poo is exciting . Yes it is totally to do with other peoples pets .

I feel your pain. Our back garden neighbours have two cats who like to poop in our garden (sometimes just openly on the lawn!) and we have small kids.

We asked if they could encourage the cats to use the litter tray more (treat training, a garden border etc) and the neighbours told us they’d try a border. They then proceeded to put plastic turf everywhere! 🙄

Personally I don’t see the point in owning an animal you never see that just goes round causing a nuisance to your neighbours 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our fences are all scratched to bits as well 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've taught my children (have 4) to throw rocks at the cats that come in our garden. It's a made a difference. It's something I wouldn't have dreamt of doing in the past but the amount of cat poo was becoming a health hazard. My sons have a good aim. Having an animal that defecates in your neighbours gardens makes you a real lowlife IMO but strangely it's normalised in the UK.

This is vile, shame on you

If you think that is torture I advise you to not read the news about what people are doing to cats and kittens online and in trees in rural areas. I don't like cats, at all, but this even made me feel sorry for them. It was quite sickening to be honest and I expect that the children that did it will probably be named soon. But seriously, if I had a cat (and presumably liked or cared about it) and I lived in those areas, I absolutely wouldn't let it exercise it's "right to roam".

HostaCentral · 12/08/2025 13:52

That's not a garden, it's an ecological desert.

And you worry about cats destroying nature.

You need to relax a bit. Stop cleaning, clearing, watering, let the grass grow, leave some weeds, allow piles of leaves to build up. Welcome nature, and cats, into your life. You will feel better for it, and nature will thank you.

No thanks- that just spells lazy to me.

It’s absolutely not a reasonable policy that all cats should be kept inside. It interferes with their natural instincts and can be severely detrimental to health and wellbeing. Yes some cats, depending on their personality can be happy in such conditions, but our cat was becoming so wild and anxious when we tried to keep in inside. The change in her when we allowed her out to roam was significant. Animal poo is part of the outdoors.

Picking up animal poo is part and parcel of being a responsible pet owner- I do hope you offer to do this if a neighbour can prove it’s your cat. Mine do thankfully!

I didn’t read it
