Coffees in London are around £4 now. I definitely don’t get one myself every day, but between me and my husband we definitely average out at spending this per day just on coffee. We just worked out, spending £4 a day on coffee every day, is almost £1,500 a year. Just on takeaway coffee. Insane. Over 20 years, that’s just under £30,000…

Gonk123 · 11/08/2025 07:17

Vinted would be so hard to give up. Their homepage is so intuitive and knows what you want to buy even more than you do. They make it so easy. I’m addicted to selling on the site too. I’ve listened to podcasts on Vinted and it’s designed to be addictive.

This is so true. The amount of times I’ve gone on there to look for a specific item that the dc need and then seen many other things and gone “oooh”. I only go on there when I need something but when I do I go hard and buy lots!

Also I think I need to delete instagram. Because there are lots of things in my house that I didn’t know I needed until they kept popping up all over my feed.

Also need to stop getting sucked in to multi buys thinking I am saving money. Because now I have 5 pet hair removal gloves that I didn’t know I needed until I saw them on Instagram instead of just one. In addition to the two brushes I already had.

Which brings me to Amazon Prime. It’s just so easy to buy stuff and get it same or next day. It does save me money in some respects (free books, cheaper prices than local shops) but I probably do also buy stuff I wouldn’t if I had to go to an actual shop and spend actual money.

Which then brings me to Apple Pay which I really need to delete because it doesn’t feel like real money.

Cleaner, gave up at start of Covid and haven’t restarted. £10,700

Nails, gave up 2019. £3600

Hair, gave up highlights 2013 and only have it cut every 5-6 months now. £7800

Alcohol : gave up three years ago. £1000

Daily Costa coffee and breakfast. Gave up 5 years ago. £13650

Added up that’s an astonishing £36750 I saved on bad habits and treats. 😮😮😮

This is amazing! Real food for thought here, I’ve got plenty of things that I could cut out but I don’t really want to and I only think of the savings individually. But when it’s all put together like that it’s really sobering

Making my dog eat dog food!! Probably spend about £10 a week on fresh meat for her .

Oh my God, same. My dog only eats chicken! It's about a tenner a week. And then little treats on top.

Buy Premium Bonds instead of National Lottery - that way you get to jeep the money!

I have them already. You are right, they do offer some return most months, which is a bonus 😀

nomorenomoreme · 11/08/2025 07:22

Nothing really. I’m already cheap due to being a one income household.

Gardening. I dread to think how much I spend!

This would be mine too. I am at the garden centre tomorrow and despite saying I have no more room for plants, I just know I will come home with something ...

CarlaLemarchant · 11/08/2025 07:25

I spend too much on perfume, reed diffusers, scented candles, anything that smells nice. I need to stop it.

Oh this is amazing! I gave up Diet Coke for 5 months and it was great, have started again now though. And what’s more annoying is I waste more money on buying it individually as I try not to have it in the house in bulk. Please update one day on how much you save!

Try this as a reason for giving it up again. All cola drinks contain an ingredient which gives the drink its dark colour. This ingredient has been found to block the absorption of calcium in the body and consumed in large amounts over time, it can cause osteoporosis. I was told this by my GP when l was first diagnosed with the condition, after asking was there anything l should stay away from.

Like a PP I could say Vinted.
I'm totally addicted to buying clothes from there.
Some hit, some a definite miss (once tried on) I find it almost as relaxing as Mumsnet for nightly browsing 😁

Also - and probably more savings to be had - lottery and Euromillions tickets.
I buy more than I should if it's a biggie 🫠

Agree re the National Lottery, Euromillions etc - I too have decided that not only have I been spending too much on them since it became easy online, I object to some of the very dubious causes they've started supporting, like organisations that go into schools to tell young children about transgender ideology. I've just let them know that I'm stopping playing for that reason, adding that I must have spent thousands over the years and have never won more than a few most basic prizes. Really they should pay our more smaller prizes, but I'm out!

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2025 07:35

It’s funny to see that nobody mentions magazines. 10 years ago they were “a treat for a long train journey “, now…nothing.

Mine is china and glass sets. If one piece breaks or the novelty wears off I think it’s fine to buy another full set and ship the old one off to University or first time homes with random young people I know. Same with bedding and towels.

Over 30 years maybe £1000?

Taking people out for dinner. For decades I thought being able to take an entire group of people out for dinner was the height of sophistication and generosity and I longed to do it. Then finally I earned enough to do it occasionally but I do it far too bloody often. I would save a few grand a year if I stopped. But I love doing it. And what is money for, once you have covered the basics? I don't buy expensive clothes. Never had my nails done, ever. Only get a hair cut twice a year. Never buy takeaways.

That is really lovely. Also, do you want a new friend?

Horses7 · 11/08/2025 07:39

Clothes and shoes - think I’ve got enough for the rest of my life even if I live to be 100!

IDontHateRainbows · 11/08/2025 07:39

Perfume , ive become addicted after going on mounjaro and giving up junk food.
Mounjaro doesn't cost as its prescribed on the nhs and I'm spending less on food but probably £200 or so on my new habit each month

Apparently very common with these weight loss drugs!

Missingducks · 11/08/2025 07:41

We played with the idea of only having one car (and a motorbike) and thus saving on insurance, road tax, fuel, repairs etc. But perhaps we aren't natural sharers after all! After 3 days we bought a second car again.

JaffavsCookie · 11/08/2025 07:42

My horse, could probably give up work and live on pension from my last job. Not a chance in hell though.

Paetina · 11/08/2025 07:48

Flowers, random Vinted/eBay bargains and Kindle books. I could also put cleaner and Pilates but the benefits for my wellbeing are too great.

Things already reduced; posh bakery visits, hairdresser (now every six months), Deliveroo and alcohol at home.

Giving up browsing Kindle daily deals, Vinted (except targeted searches for replacements), Mumsnet Style and Beauty threads and instagram would probably lead to me cutting out 90% of my non essential purchases.

DancingNotDrowning · 11/08/2025 07:49

I spend enough on clothes to buy myself a (small) new car every year, but I do love clothes so that would be hard.

Would love to knock take aways on the head - nearly always disappointing and for 6 of us a once or twice a week habit is expensive

Horses. It would save me about £15k per year.

This . If I hadn’t had horses I could probably have retired 10yrs earlier .

OxfordInkling · 11/08/2025 07:58

I’d save £nearly 3k if I did my own cleaning. If the price keeps rising I might do so. But I really really hate doing it myself.

But at the same time, we could go to Mexico for a week AI on that money.
