Coffees in London are around £4 now. I definitely don’t get one myself every day, but between me and my husband we definitely average out at spending this per day just on coffee. We just worked out, spending £4 a day on coffee every day, is almost £1,500 a year. Just on takeaway coffee. Insane. Over 20 years, that’s just under £30,000…

I switched from gym to home workouts. I have one subscription for workouts now - it's £60 per year versus very much more for the gym. I know it's not for everyone but I love the convenience as well as the much lower cost

dontcryformeargentina · 11/08/2025 04:57

Hairdresser every month ( changed to every six months ) and do my roots myself in between. Going out weekly for drinks with friends- stopped as find it boring now and don’t want to damage my liver anymore. Amazon purchases ( it was 3-4 times per week before)- once every 3 -4 months now. Designer clothes/ bags- don’t care , I look good anyway- confident and self assured. All these savings are spent on more meaningful stuff now.

Like a PP I could say Vinted.
I'm totally addicted to buying clothes from there.
Some hit, some a definite miss (once tried on) I find it almost as relaxing as Mumsnet for nightly browsing 😁

Also - and probably more savings to be had - lottery and Euromillions tickets.
I buy more than I should if it's a biggie 🫠

Put the lottery ticket money into NSandI then you get the buzz once a month and don’t lose any money. I win about 150 a month on average but have had max amount in.

Yes, that's a ton of wasted money. But why is this in AIBU? I'm mystified as to why people shoehorn everything in here. Isn't there a finance forum or a frugality forum?

It's because AIBU has the most traffic. Not that mystifying surely? Lots of the other boards are very quiet. That's for MN to sort out really - stuff can sit there for ages with no responses.

NewLifeLoading · 11/08/2025 05:06

Amazon. I have about 10 parcels in the corner. Forget what i ordered, open them up then let the next pile build again

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 11/08/2025 05:18

Weight loss injections have been cost neutral for me vs reduced spending on food and alcohol, but I'm spending a small fortune on new clothes.

Buying tonnes of seeds and plants every Spring with every intention of nurturing them. I don't.

Oh me too, and I murder them all. A plant needs to be fairly mature to survive me.

Buying books on Kindle. I don't keep a count, but I'm sure it's easily £50 a month.
But I consider it money well spent for so many hours of enjoyment, plus many are read more than once.

Did you know that there are kindle books on Prime? I hadn't realised till I turned off kindle unlimited.

When my dog passes I don't think we'll get another for a while, partly due to expense. He's worth it but I daren't calculate his costs over a year!

Currently looking at my old, beloved mutt thinking 'just imagine you as a stock and shares isa' 🤣

I don't think I could manage without a dog though.

Monty27 · 11/08/2025 05:41

Deffo wine and ciggies but I do balance my accounts by buying yellow stickered food and wonderful finds in charity shops enabling me to have a beautiful home, wardrobe and garden.
It can be done.

HelpMeRonda · 10/08/2025 23:41

Nappies!
£1500 per year!

Just stop pissing yourself!

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 11/08/2025 05:47

Alcohol! We gave up a few months ago and saved £300 in the first month. That's a fairly ordinary month where we were not out at restaurants alot also. A mere £10 savings a day and you have saved £300 or £310.

I have just had a week where DH does a hobby event. It takes 8 days and there are alot of evenings out etc. I did a rough calculation that between us we saved £1 k on alcohol alone. I don't miss it at all. i loved being able to get up at 6 am and be raring for whatever the day brings. Often I would go and see the dawn at the ebach with a cup of coffee. One couple we were with are big drinkers. Starting at noon, then going on all night. Most mornings I would come down to a dining table just littered with empty rum and gin bottles.

They had an absolute blast. So did we. But I confess I am so so grateful we did not spend an extra £1 k at a bare minimum on it.

SapphireSeptember · 11/08/2025 05:51

Nail polish. I'd save a fortune if I stopped buying it. But it's so pretty!

Dogaredabomb · 11/08/2025 05:51

BusWankers · 11/08/2025 00:18

Do you notice having more money?

Yes I do! I was creaking through to the end of the month and having to borrow a bit here and there. Now it's fine and I can put away a couple of hundred in the shit happens fund.

There's the added saving of not getting a couple of things every time I went to the shop, lotto, chocolate, crisps, a croissant 🤣 I'm basically just a bit shit really.

Dogaredabomb · 11/08/2025 05:56

IridiumSky · 11/08/2025 02:59

Yup. Me too.
I can’t resist a bargain, even if I have no need of or desire for the thing.
Recently, two ex-Highways Agency vehicles which I have never driven, now sitting in a field; and last week, forty garden chairs and an X-Ray machine.
I’m not making this up. It’s madness. 😀
So the answer for me, is auctions.

Are you interested in vintage radios? I'm selling one 🤣

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 11/08/2025 05:57

Not shit at all @Dogaredabomb !

That's what i found - the first month I gave up alcohol I was not in my overdraft before payday. It was amazing.

ETA- based on what a pp said upthread I am going to delete my lottery account and put that money into NS&I. Good advice.

mamabearlove · 11/08/2025 01:19

Crikey are you in the UK ?

Yes, some shops they're over £20.

Neededa · 11/08/2025 05:59

Cigarettes, actually not a small thing and we are fortunate to be able to afford them. But oh my god, cigarettes. What an absolute waste of money.
PS kids, do not start smoking when you’re young in the 80s

ForLoveNotMoney · 11/08/2025 06:06

oh good, loads!

My horse. That would save £3-400 a month.

My fancy gym membership that I don’t use enough in summer £135

My Mounjaro £135

So approx £700 a month right there! But then I’d be miserable, lose my identity, be plagued with joint pain and likely gain weight again.

Id rather be skint 😬

Silvertulips · 11/08/2025 06:09

I do have 3 kids who are all finally working - I have save £20K in the last 2 years. One has finished Uni so that will be £3K saved over the year. One still in Uni and doesn’t pay rent yet - One pays rent £2500 per year.

So should be UP when she finishes and works full time.

samthepigeon · 11/08/2025 06:09

Catsandcannedbeans · 10/08/2025 23:48

This is gross but I used to smoke a pack of Marlboro Golds a day. Saved so much since I quit. I from 2015-2020, quit before we got married because I didn’t want to be stinking on my wedding day and also didn’t want to have to nip out mid vows for a cig. They’re about £20 a pack so if I calculate how much I spent on them I will spontaneously combust.

Now it’s probably the pub. Me and DH do darts and pool a lot and we’re in our locals league. I don’t drink right now because I’m pregnant (he doesn’t most of the time out of solidarity) and we’ve saved a fortune. Also we are fucking killing the competition because we’re not half cut (humble brag).

Also, the cat. She’s DDs cat, but I don’t like her spending all her pocket money on Miss Kitty Kat, so I buy her most things. DD is only six, but she does research on what’s good for the cat ect. She has salmon oil for the coat and has pretty nice cat food. I’m glad DD cares so deeply and to be honest I’m impressed with her diligence - but Jesus this cat eats better than some kids. When I was a kid I didn’t eat as well as Kitty Kat.

Well done giving up smoking!
I used to spend money on alcohol, but as I got older (since having kids, actually) I find it makes me feel too unwell. Quite sad, as I loved a pint or two, but it got to the point it wasn't worth it. Must have saved a fortune!

Lunch out at work (pret, itsu, even a cheap meal deal is a fiver now).

I need to suck it up and accept making a quick sandwich or salad of a morning, or bulk cooking a pot of soup and freezing it in portions. I think i can make a basic lunch for £2 a day, so save £3/ day, 3 days a week in office, 46 weeks a year.... over £400.

Not getting up early enough to walk to the station and driving/parking. £8 a day. 3 times a week, 46 weeks a year. Over £1000.

I bet a homemade lunch wouldn't be two quid a day even, so you could save even more!

LillyPJ · 11/08/2025 06:15

That's why I don't buy coffees when I'm out! The only thing I can think of that I could give up to save money is my car. I'm a very frugal person and my car is small and modest, but if I add up what running a car costs, it's frighteningly expensive.

My Vinted addiction. I dread to think how much I've spent in the last year. I've dropped 2 dress sizes which means I've had to buy "new to me" clothes but I've gone OTT.

Don’t you sell too?
