Coffees in London are around £4 now. I definitely don’t get one myself every day, but between me and my husband we definitely average out at spending this per day just on coffee. We just worked out, spending £4 a day on coffee every day, is almost £1,500 a year. Just on takeaway coffee. Insane. Over 20 years, that’s just under £30,000…

Reading through the thread and gin came to mind. DH topped up on the ferry last month as it was so cheap. We probably drink 20-25 bottles a year which is £1k.

Gin is nice isn’t it? 😁

You can take my cleaner from my cold dead hands...

I started cutting my own hair during lockdown and have carried on. So much money saved. I've weaned myself off (mostly) my addiction to beauty boxes/advent calendars. The stuff never gets used.
If I gave up buying concert/theatre tickets I'd be a very rich woman, but they're my joy. One day everone I want to see will have give up touring/died.

Hair every six weeks at £200 a time, plus nails every 3 weeks at £40. So over £2k per annum

Crikey that adds up doesn't it? Its nearer £2400 though...! I deliberately don't have hair treatments that have to be maintained by someone else as I can't warrent spending that much on myself!

Same here but we stopped for overseas kid relatives too and our local relatives announced they weren’t buying for us so that became very easy!

My elderly relative’s niece insist on buying her something so she keeps sending them gifts (they are 45+) this years gift was a box of chocolate biscuits from Amazon, clearly made for an overseas market and relabelled for here, they taste stale and have no flavour and no sell by date or eat by date.

Relative won’t eat them, I assumed they were a 99p special but no they cost almost £7. What a waste!

My father in law buys everything from Amazon. He's a bit flash so goes for brands. Unfortunately it's Amazon so what often turns up is dodgy. I've had to pour 3 bottles of expensive gin away because it was obviously fake. My husband has a difficult relationship with him so all we can do is just smile and say thank you. Whilst being angry that he keeps getting ripped off.

But by doing your own hair and stopping beauty boxes you will have saved potentially £1000s which will cover a lot of gigs (unless you see people like Oasis a lot!) so that makes the gig tickets free.

NOHotel · 11/08/2025 11:24

My child 😂

We could cut our takeaways as we have 1-2 a week at the moment but after the summer holidays it will likely drop down to 1 a week if that.

I would never spend money on coffee.

namechangeGOT · 11/08/2025 11:25

My hair. I spend a lot of money on it.
holidays - would save an insane amount of money.
Coke Zero.
I could stop buying my sons Lego - he has all the major big sets, builds and then displays them - this would also save lots of space. Also save money on husband building elaborate shelves to showcase them.

In truth, I’m not going to give up any of them!

The question was 'What SMALL things...'

SingingintheWind · 11/08/2025 11:30

We have already cut back a lot on things we don't need. I cut my own hair, hardly ever buy alcohol, don't need my nails done or beauty treatments. We eat out only for birthdays and anniversary, and that's not guaranteed.
I couldn't go without our holidays though as they are important to us, but I wouldn't mind Christmas being cut back a lot more.

BadActingParsley · 11/08/2025 11:32

I spend £189 a month on a gym membership - I try and go to 3 classes a week (I could do 2 more but I don't particularly like those classes) but more often than not it's 2 a week. It would be much much cheaper at the Council gym - but I wouldn't get the same kick up the arse as I do now.

Gardening - trying really hard not to buy a million bulbs for spring. My garden is tiny and full. Proper full.

Clothes - I wear the same things day in and day out but shopping me is convinced there's a stylish lady underneath that just needs that one thing to bring her out...

Nice food at M&S....

Just done some retirement planning and it's focussing my mind somewhat.

£200 every six weeks!! Omg. I’ve just changed hairdressers to now pay £28 instead of £52 for a c&b every 10 weeks. Confused

Shufflebumnessie · 11/08/2025 11:39

Cans of coke and take aways. It wouldn't save a huge amount of money but would definitely benefit my waistline 😅
If I deleted the Vinted app that would also help but now I'm trying to sell on it rather than buy!

Mounjaro…. Fizzy drinks…. Hmmmm.

Sugar free, zero calorie one specific fizzy drink which is my safe drink and the only drink I consume. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t take drugs, I don’t consume caffeine, I don’t drink hot drinks. I think I’ll live. I’ve lost 5st7 and have been maintaining that for a while. The fizzy drink is not why I was overweight. Over consumption was why I was overweight.

neverbeenskiing · 11/08/2025 11:41

Perfume. I wear it every day and at about £80 a bottle (I try to shop around and get it discounted) it's an extravagance. But it makes me feel good.

Especially when you consider that cost is coming off your net salary as well, not your gross salary.

People always put these things in context of what they earn, but if you look at it ias a proportion of your disposable income after essential bills then it's a shocking amount to spend on something that's so easy to do for yourself at home for a fraction of the cost. Even factoring in the cost of a decent bean-to-cup barista machine and a bag of coffee beans each week and a good quality re-usable insulated cup.

I get the desire to 'go out for a coffee' as a social activity, but to spend money daily on taking it away seems like utter madness to me.

i am addicted to the Kindle Daily Deal. Yesterday I bought 12 Dick Francis books! Even if they're 'only' 99p it mounts up.

Good job I didn't spot this deal- would have bought loads too.

Impulse buying and dopamine chasing!

Damn ADHD costs me a fortune.

Missingducks · 11/08/2025 11:53

Thought of another one ... Random handwritten cards - would never stop birthday cards but am cutting down on Christmas cards to random people just because they've always been on a list and I am sending fewer 'just a note' cards. Actually I am almost done sending birthday cards overseas as I have found an e-card service for £24 per year which is more reliable than the post. And I am no longer posting chocolate advent calendars to my godchildren ... For a start they are now all over 18, the post cost more than the calendars, and they are just as happy with a scratch card!

Amazon. I have about 10 parcels in the corner. Forget what i ordered, open them up then let the next pile build again

I took my payment method off so that everytime I want to buy something I have to set that back up.

It's amazing how the effort of setting up the payment method and then faffing about to remove it afterwards makes me stop and think about whether I do need the biscuits barrel shaped like a tortoise.

I know not good for the environment but disposable cups and lids are handy too. We do have very nice reusable cups. But if I know the cup will sit in the car for ages I bring a disposable one. I also live about a 2.5hr drive from most of my family so when they visit I send them off with a tea or coffee for the drive.

beguilingeyes · 11/08/2025 12:14

Takeaways (or deliveries) are so expensive now! I really fancied a Chinese last night, but it would have cost around £30 for three dishes.
