To think that a lot of MPs would turn up to the opening of an envelope - just because it’s free?

I swear, some politicians will go to absolutely anything as long as they don’t have to pay for it. Ribbon-cuttings, pointless networking events, fancy receptions - if there’s a buffet or a photo op, they’re there. I get that public appearances are part of the job but sometimes it feels like they spend more time schmoozing at free events than actually doing anything useful.

AIBU to think they just love a freebie?

Ours would, literally every photo opportunity they're there..
Then dissapears until they get wind of the next photo opportunity.

None of those things are particularly fun to do, it's just part of the job. So no, I don't think the examples you gave are about trying to get freebies, more about being seen and making connections.

It’s part of the job and must be as boring as hell.

Or on the flip side, everyone complains that they’re never at anything, they never see their MP. These events are boring as fuck, they don’t go to them for the fun of it.

Yes this was my first thought too.

All part of the job.

Have you seen the state of MPs in parliament. Most of them have never had real jobs. Some would struggle to spell the word MP. The standards are so low that these leeching grifters are just there to line their pockets as much as possible until they get booted out.

They’re not only thick as mince but also low life crooks, masquerading as respectable people.

I know a local MP. It is extremely dull most of the time. They attend these things to show they care about their constituents and want to support local businesses or important causes.

It also sometimes gives a little publicity to a small charity or community project. It isn't for the MP's benefit.
Not do they usually get any freebies (other than a cup of tea perhaps).

I was at an event recently where the Lord Mayor came (not an MP I know, but similar 'its part of the role to attend community things). This was his 5th event of the day. I'm pretty sure it would be a lot more appealing to have had a lie in and then pottered about at home in his comfies for a while.

OTOH, I do think there should be serious consequences for MPs that don't bother to turn up for parliament. You know, a pretty main part of their actual job.

If you think they're doing it for fun and freebies, I don't think you've had much experience of making small talk and eating tired sandwiches at corporate events.

It's a necessary evil so they get their name and face out there as much as possible.
