Ringing in sick?

My work place make it as difficult as possible to call in sick.

you have to phone the top boss between 6.30 and 7am

You can’t tell them in advance. You cant email or text.

you can’t tell you line manager
you can’t call in sick day one, have a day off, get signed and then email in or call someone else.

if you are signed off or told to self certify you only have to ring in once AFTER that. Other wise you have to ring in.

there is no practical need for this other than they need to know before 7.30.

someone rang in with a cold cough and were told they still
needed to come in as it was only a cold.
another called at 7.30 as they tried to come in but were to ill after getting ready.

I called in Wednesday and was signed off so I emailed the person responsible for sickness to say so. This is the bosses PA. I was then told off at my RTW about the “confusion” regarding not calling the boss.

EDIT. We have low rates of staff sickness.

AIBU to think must be a deterrent

As someone said on another thread.

Employers get references for us, if only we could get references for them!

There are so many things that i was not about my job before i started here

You can, on glassdoor. Leave anonymous reviews on the company you work/worked for.

I don’t care how my team members let me know they’re too ill to work, as long as they let me know before work starts so I can sort cover. I’ve had Whatsapps at 3am (from the loo they’ve been vomiting over, it seems), emails, voice notes, Teams messages. I don’t care. As long as they get a message to me, their line manager and my line manager so we have broad spectrum cover in case one of us is also indisposed. But then, I have an issue making the people in my team actually admit they’re bloody ill and taking the time they need to recover instead of making themselves even worse. I really don’t understand places that make it really difficult.

I WhatsApp my boss to tell him I won’t be in if I’m sick. More a friendly heads up than permission and I am under no obligation to give a reason either

This! If you're ill, you're ill. Having to try and be awake enough to make a phone call at a specific time, or take one, can be seriously tough. Doing so can also actively lengthen your absence

Top boss doesn’t need to know and I told the people who do red to know via what’s app or email. Whichever they will get first. Also put in team chat. If I didn’t they would have less time so get organised for the day.

Boss doesn’t need to know at 6.30.

Gracious, that is a lot of hoops to jump through OP! I’m lucky in that I can send my team a WhatsApp if I’m unwell.

Toomanywaterbottles · 08/08/2025 22:24

Apart from the boss telling you to come in because it was only a cold, the rest sounds pretty normal to me. We have to phone in by 7am at the latest and speak to the duty manager. We also have to phone in every day unless you know you’re going to be off for a longer period and you have a fit note.

Swirlythingy2025 · 08/08/2025 22:53

our managers prefered the call, but then that depends on if they are available etc personally i prefered watsapp as then its written down

supersonicginandtonic · 08/08/2025 23:01

My team are supposed to call me. I tell them to just drop me a message, easier for us both that way.
