Rent

My grown up child has moved back home because of a breakup with their partner. It's been 6mths now rent free.
But my husband is telling me to ask him for rent now, as the extra costs for water, electricity etc is starting to show on the bills.
How much do people charge their children in the same situation or in general that the grown up child still lives at home. And is in full time employment.
I do agree with my husband. But really not sure how much I should be asking for.
The excuses he needs to save up to get somewhere to live are wearing thin. As his quite happy ordering take aways even after going shopping.

My 21 yr old ds still lives at home and pays £60 a week for a double room and all bills.

if he moved out he would have to pay £600 a month for a double room round here so he’s got a good deal and can afford to save.

£200 a month minimum. If he is using your gas/electric etc then of course he should be contributing.
Remind him how much he is saving not having to actually pay for somewhere to live.

This should give you an idea at what market rates are in your area. I'd probably charge somewhat less.

£100 a week. Below market rate, gives him room to save but also not so cheap your partner will feel hard done by.

If they have moved back I would be asking for £500 a month. They won’t have any other household bills to pay so can still save. Personally 6 months of no rent should mean he should have a few thousand he can use to rent elsewhere

As an adult with plenty of spare money for takeaways who makes up 1/3 of the household, he pays 1/3 of the rent bills.

£200 pm just to cover his extra costs. I do his laundry. He buys all his own toiletries, food, etc he pays all his phone, gym car expenses.
HTH.

If We were hard up then we would charge more.
